Week in Review: MW4's 108K Peak, GTA 6's Verdict Window, and More

It was the week the biggest launch of October started breathing. Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 campaign unlocked into early access on Thursday. The Call of Duty Steam hub pushed past 100,000 concurrent players overnight. A few hours earlier, Rockstar and Take-Two confirmed GTA 6 launches November 19 and that the IWGB (the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain, representing game workers at UK studios) v Rockstar tribunal’s closing arguments would land one day before. Three industry-labor stories (Activision’s QA strike vote, Wizards of the Coast’s D&D union rejection, and Alliance Arts cancelling its Drunken Goddess Reflux demo over AI cloning fears) had stacked into a single labor-and-AI arc no one had planned. Below is the story of that week, with our coverage linked where it lands.

The 5 biggest stories

Modern Warfare 4 lit up the Steam charts. The Call of Duty hub peaked at 108,471 concurrent players on Sunday morning, up 253% from a 30,705 baseline the prior weekend. Our play-count data shows it is the strongest PC pre-launch indicator so far. For example, Battlefield 6’s free-weekend extension on October 16 moved that game from 32,220 to 71,460 concurrent players (+122%), but MW4’s pre-launch push came without a free trial. Campaign Early Access opened Thursday. The review roundup was solid 90% positive on Steam by Sunday, with IGN’s Simon Cardy calling it “the best Modern Warfare since its 2019 reboot.” Activision QA’s strike authorization vote landed hours before early access, and our campaign unpack pulled at the thread. Full launch is October 23 with the release time and zone guide, Switch 2 price guide, editions compared, campaign length breakdown, and crossplay pages all live.

GTA 6 launches November 19, one day after the Rockstar-IWGB tribunal closes. Rockstar and Take-Two confirmed the November 19 worldwide launch date for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Our industry piece tracked the timing: IWGB’s closing arguments run November 17-18, 31 staff fired in late 2025, 200 Rockstar employees signed letters, Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine raised it in Parliament. Reviews are reportedly going live before launch per Insider Gaming. Our GTA 6 launch pack covers release date, characters (Jason, Lucia, and Leonida), editions (Standard $79.99 vs Ultimate $99.99), crossplay (no), Game Pass/PS Plus (no), and PC status (timing still unclear). For example, GTA V took 19 months to come to PC after the 2013 console launch; RDR2 took about a year; the Q1 2027 PC window GamesBeat cited sits inside that band.

Ghost of Yotei earned an estimated $407M launch, Trails Tsushima aligned. Sony’s open-world samurai sequel pulled roughly $407M in its first month, per Circana’s October report. Circana is the US retail-tracker that replaced NPD Group in 2023, used by every major publisher for monthly US sales. The story reads as a slow-launch parallel to its 2020 predecessor rather than a runaway hit. The number lands in the same window as last year’s launch-aligned comparison vs Ghost of Tsushima, and it gives Sony a credible 2026 PS5 tentpole while it waits for the GTA 6 window to close.

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is the best launch Konami has shipped in years. The first 2D Castlevania since 2008’s Order of Ecclesia shipped to 81% Very Positive on Steam, with a 16-hour completion window per Game Informer. Our Editions Compared page is the biggest Google lander this week (133 views in seven days). Critics split between VGC’s cautious 3/5 and Game Informer’s 92% “Worthy of the Whip,” and our crossplay guide tracks what does and doesn’t work across PS5, Xbox, Switch, and PC.

Final Fantasy Resonance got a Famitsu 36/40. Famitsu is Japan’s flagship weekly game magazine, the standard-rating source across the Tokyo publisher world. Square Enix’s upcoming October 22 HD-2D JRPG earned top marks from Famitsu and our Editions Compared page (Standard $49.99 / Deluxe $59.99) is in pack. With Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] taking the Famitsu sales top spot in the same week (23,411 Switch 2 + 6,261 PS5 first-week copies), Square Enix’s HD-2D slate is finding a console generation gap to fill.

Winners and losers of the week

Winner: indie Japanese developers. Three first-in-English stories this week came out of Tokyo. Wildaria hit 2,000 sales in ten days. Japanese Ramen Simulator passed 100K sales with a published roadmap. And Where the Seeds Fall set a $7 worldwide launch at CygamesEdge, going wide on November 5 instead of staying Japan-only.

Loser: live-service games that walk things back. Jagex cancelled RuneScape Reignited twelve days before its December 2 launch. SEGA pulled Total War Shogun 2 Complete Edition after backlash. Bulkhead admitted “We f***ed up” on WARDOGS Season 2 mid-launch. Pattern: when players hear “remastered” or “reset,” they expect a better version, and three studios learned in one week that the publisher-rolled-back-promise PR playbook is still active.

Winner: Pixel Herald’s release-time pages. Our Modern Warfare 4 release time page drew 1,682 views and 1,539 visitors in seven days, more than the homepage. The Planet Zoo 2 release time guide drew 119. Together they tell us that “When does X unlock?” beats every other question we publish. We are leaning into those now for Final Fantasy Resonance, Hitman: Absolution Switch 2, and PEAK console.

Loser: studio-cancellation news with no second-act plan. Liquid Swords went bankrupt six months after Samson launched. Wizards of the Coast rejected the D&D union claiming it “isn’t neutral.” Alliance Arts cancelled its Drunken Goddess Reflux demo over AI cloning fears. Each is a different shape of bad, and our industry-labor arc is now six entries long.

Winner: Reddit as a traffic source. Reddit drove 1,657 visitors in seven days, more than half our total. Facebook added 488, direct 535, Google 289. r/xbox, r/ArcRaiders, r/Games, and the per-game subs are the ones sending readers; Kerwin posts these himself from the night’s Reddit picks.

Loser: anyone shipping a console with the cost conversation unanswered. The PlayStation 5 Pro launched at $699.99 in November 2024. A KeplerL2 thread this week argued PS6’s RAM and NAND alone already exceed $680 per console, paraphrased as the PS6 cost over $1,000 story. The next-gen console spec-and-price conversation is now part of every hardware piece.

7 MW4 Campaign Early Access: How to Play on October 16 25 22

The pattern: release-time pages and editions-comparisons draw search traffic across both current-generation consoles and PC. The Gears E-Day DDoS story from October 14 still pulls because the outage post-mortem never got a clean answer, and players keep searching “is E-Day down” on weekends. The MW4 launch wave will reset the leaderboard next week when the editions page, Switch 2 page, and campaign guide all start earning.

The shift that reads loudest is the labor stack. In seven days we covered seven labor or AI-impact stories: Activision QA, Funcom restructuring, WotC rejecting the D&D union, Alliance Arts cancelling its demo, Wizards of the Coast’s “not neutral” D&D stance, Liquid Swords’ bankruptcy, and the WARDOGS Season 2 mid-launch apology. Each one reads as a single story in isolation. Stacked, they read as the moment game workers started winning the unionization argument in the press even when the employer side pushed back. The Activision QA strike vote passed Wednesday. The Rockstar-IWGB tribunal’s closing arguments will be public. Even when the union gets rejected at the table, the record gets made.
