Updated October 14, 2026: Added the $99.99 Vault Edition breakdown, the 10% Loyalty Discount rules, and the $30 Standard-to-Vault upgrade path.

Quick answer
– Buy Standard ($69.99) if you mainly want the campaign and a weekend of multiplayer, and you’d rather spend the $30 on something else.
– Buy Digital Vault ($99.99) if you’ll be online most of Season 1 anyway and want BlackCell, the Signature Weapon Collection, and both Operator Packs on day one without grinding the Battle Pass.
– Buy Physical Standard ($69.99) only if you need a disc on PS5 or Xbox Series X (Switch 2 physical arrives later). The disc has no extra content beyond Digital Standard.
– Already pre-ordered Standard? The in-game Vault upgrade is $30 any time after launch, and it does not stack with the 10% Loyalty Discount.

Modern Warfare 4 ships in three SKUs across four systems on October 23, 2026: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam and Battle.net), and Nintendo Switch 2. Switch 2 pre-orders opened later than the others, with the physical disc arriving after launch, per the Activision pre-order benefits post carried on Xbox Wire. Microsoft confirms the game is also an Xbox Play Anywhere title, so one purchase covers console and Xbox-PC cloud.

Source: Xbox.com Modern Warfare 4 product page and Xbox Wire first-details. The $69.99 / $99.99 baseline prices match what Activision has posted on Battle.net and Steam’s app page (appid 4435490); Microsoft Store Canada lists the Vault at CAD $129.99, which is the same USD price minus tax.

What each edition gives you

Digital Standard ($69.99)

The base game on every storefront: PS Store, Microsoft Store, Nintendo eShop (Switch 2), Steam and Battle.net. This is what 90% of players will buy. If you pre-order digitally, you get the full pre-order bonus stack listed in the next section. If you buy the disc version on PS5 or Xbox Series X, you still get the same content; you’re just paying for the disc, not extra.

Physical Standard ($69.99)

Identical content to Digital Standard on a disc or cartridge. At launch, this option is only stocked on PS5 and Xbox Series X (both disc editions). The Switch 2 physical release arrives after the digital launch, per Activision’s pre-order benefits post. There’s no Game Pass option at launch.

Digital Vault ($99.99)

Adds five things on top of the base game. The full breakdown, per our pre-order guide:

  • Hostile Alliance Operator Pack: two variants of Price and Valeria, plus Ghost and Blix. Launches with MW4, lands in Warzone in Season 1.
  • Special Forces Operator Pack: four Operators from the campaign’s Coalition force, each with localized voice packs (COM SFT France, KSK Amphibious Germany, South Korean Special Forces, SAS UK). Same Season 1 rollout.
  • Signature Weapon Collection: five weapons with unique Blueprints and Apex Attachments: a Kastov 762 with the experimental Voltspine Kastov Arc attachment, an ISO Nightshade SMG with La Sombra Venenosa Blueprint and ISO Trace tracking rounds, a Rezi 12 shotgun with Rezi Enforcer pump-action conversion, an Oris 8.6 marksman rifle with Oris Razor three-knife attachment, and a Combat Knife.
  • BlackCell is Call of Duty’s premium Battle Pass tier, a paid add-on that adds extra tiers of cosmetic unlock rewards on top of the free and standard paid tracks. The Vault grants BlackCell for one season (Season 1): 1,100 COD Points, 20 Tier Skips, and the exclusive BlackCell Operator and Blueprint drops that ship during the season.
  • DMZ Deployment Bonus: contents have not been published publicly yet; Activision says they’re coming closer to the DMZ Early Access window on October 20.

Pre-order bonuses everyone gets

The pre-order stack is identical whether you’re buying Standard or Vault. Per Xbox Wire and our pre-order guide, every pre-order unlocks:

  • Campaign Early Access starting Friday, October 16 in Pacific time: a full week of single-player before the October 23 launch night.
  • Hunter Killer Operator Skin in Black Ops 7 and Warzone: instant on pre-order, with the same skin arriving in MW4 at launch.
  • Gilded Pearl Weapon Camo Pack: Moonlit Pearl Universal Camo unlocks instantly in Black Ops 7 Season 05, and a Gilded Ruin Universal Camo is earnable through a challenge (the first 100,000 players to clear it get a serial-numbered engraving). Both also land in MW4 at launch. The challenge window opened at 12:00 PM PT on July 23, so anyone pre-ordering today is past the serialization race.
  • Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint: translucent OG Green variant exclusive to Xbox Series X|S, mil-spec variant everywhere else. Functionally identical.
  • Open Beta Early Access: the second beta ran August 28 through September 1, so this is a wrap for everyone.

Two of these have hard redemption windows. The Hunter Killer Skin and the Gilded Pearl Camo must be redeemed by October 23, 2027, per Activision’s footnotes. Miss the date, lose the cosmetic, no exceptions.

Early-access timing and pre-load

Pre-loads for MW4 unlock at 9 PM PT on October 22, per our preload brief. The full game unlock is midnight local time in each region on October 23, which means 12:00 AM ET, 9:00 PM PT (October 22), midnight GMT/BST, midnight CET/CEST, midnight JST. For the campaign Early Access window starting October 16, Activision’s note is that the unlock time is 12:00 AM PT on October 16, which works out to 3:00 AM ET and 9:00 PM in Tokyo.

If you want the campaign Early Access, the cutoff is the standard pre-order at any retailer; Game Pass isn’t an option, so there are no subscription loopholes.

Upgrade path: Standard to Vault

If you already pre-ordered Standard and are now reconsidering, the upgrade cost is $30 in the in-game store or your platform’s storefront, any time after launch. That extra $30 buys the same Vault bundle (Operator Packs, Signature Weapons, BlackCell, DMZ Deployment Bonus). Important: the 10% Loyalty Discount does not apply to upgrades per Activision’s terms, so don’t wait past launch hoping for the discount to land on the upgrade.

The loyalty discount itself (10% off Vault) is for players who have owned and played a Call of Duty title released in 2019 or later, or played one through Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or PC Game Pass. It applies only to fresh Vault pre-orders on the same platform account, and it expires at launch on October 23. If you qualify, the math drops Vault from $99.99 to $89.99.

What about Game Pass and PS Plus?

Modern Warfare 4 is not on Xbox Game Pass at launch, per the Xbox Wire pre-order benefits coverage and the Microsoft Store terms page for the launch title. Game Pass access is on the books for Holiday 2027. Sony’s PS Plus Extra/Premium service does not include Activision-published first-party games at launch either. So whatever you buy now, you own. Game Pass subscribers can’t “stream MW4 on day one” without buying it.

Which one should you actually buy?

  • Standard, you primarily want the campaign. Get Digital Standard. The 8-12 hour campaign is the centerpiece, and the multiplayer grind will carry you through Season 1 either way. Pre-order to lock in the October 16 Early Access window.
  • Vault, you live in ranked and want BlackCell on day one. The BlackCell pass alone (1,100 CP, 20 Tier Skips, exclusive Operator drops) is worth roughly $20 of value if you’d otherwise pay for the Battle Pass bundle. Add the 5 Signature Weapons and 8 Operators, and the $30 premium pays for itself within the first season if you’re an active player.
  • Physical Standard, you only buy discs. The PS5 and Xbox Series X disc versions launch on October 23; the Switch 2 disc drops later per Activision. There’s zero content difference versus Digital Standard, so the $69.99 is just for the box.
  • Wait-and-see. Pre-order Standard to lock in the Early Access for the campaign, then decide on the Vault upgrade after launch. If the multiplayer hooks you, the $30 upgrade is waiting. If you bounce off the multiplayer, you saved the $30.

Our read

The $30 Vault premium is mostly a Season 1 convenience pack, not a gameplay advantage. None of the Vault-exclusive weapons are definitively better than what’s reachable through normal progression, and the Operators are cosmetic. We counted Activision’s published Vault pack contents against the Standard pre-order bundle (Hunter Killer Skin + Gilded Pearl Camo + Inner Circuit M4 Blueprint) and the BlackCell season is the only piece that’s not available through any other Day 1 channel. The BlackCell pass is the only part that meaningfully changes your launch-week experience: it skips the early-season grind, gives you 1,100 CP to spend on launch bundles, and unlocks the exclusive BlackCell Operator and Blueprint drops that ship with Season 1. If you play ranked or grind camos, that’s real value. If you mostly want the campaign and don’t touch the multiplayer after finishing it, Standard is enough.

The more interesting trick is the upgrade path. Pre-order Standard for Early Access and the $30 refund window, then upgrade to Vault after launch if the multiplayer catches you. The Loyalty Discount isn’t usable on upgrades, so the only saving you sacrifice by waiting is the 10% off Vault at pre-order (you had to be a 2019+ CoD owner or Game Pass subscriber anyway).
