Final Fantasy Resonance: Release Date, Platforms, Editions and Latest News

Final Fantasy Resonance launched on October 22, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and PC. It is the first Final Fantasy built in HD-2D, the look Square Enix uses for pixel-art characters in fully 3D environments. The official Steam page calls it “the first FINAL FANTASY to join the HD-2D lineup,” and the Nintendo eShop listing for Switch 2 carries the same description.

Square Enix and LANCARSE Ltd. developed the game. The Square Enix Store product page lists the Collector’s Edition as the only physical version. It bundles the Standard Edition on disc with a code to upgrade to Digital Deluxe, in a goods box holding an acrylic block set and special-edition art.

What the game is

HD-2D is Square Enix’s name for its signature look, which pairs pixel-art characters with pixelized 3D models and a free-moving camera. Resonance is a turn-based RPG built on the story of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, so it is a console RPG rather than a phone game with a new coat of paint. Visions are the party members who fight alongside you, and combat turns on staggering enemies to seize extra turns and set up Resonance attacks. Square Enix’s official demo announcement lists a free demo on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and Xbox on PC, carrying your save into the full game. Our beginner’s guide to combat and Visions walks through the whole system.

Editions and price

Standard at $49.99 is the straightforward pick. The Digital Deluxe Edition at $59.99 adds the Magitek Armor Key, which turns your chocobo into a magitek-armor bird, and the Archwitch’s Grimoire, which unlocks a named character’s Limit Break. Both prices come from the Steam store’s own package listing and the Square Enix Store.

Reviews

OpenCritic’s Top Critic Average is 85, in the “Mighty” tier, and the critical consensus is split between the combat and the story. Our reviews roundup tracks the scores, with the story the most common complaint.

Where and how to play it

On PC, the specs and Steam Deck guide covers the hardware list and confirms Valve’s Verified rating. Cross-save is the one thing that is not universal: Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud saves are the exceptions, and there is no cross-save between other stores. Launch timing is on the release time page, and the Release Calendar carries every other game we track.

What this means for you

The game is out, the price is set, and the PC version runs on a Steam Deck. The open question is the story, and the fastest way to settle it is the free demo. It carries your save into the full game on the same platform, so start there before you buy the Deluxe.

The launch numbers put Resonance in a specific place rather than a vague one. Our own Steam player tracking recorded a peak of 27,813 concurrent players on day one, and GamesRadar+ put the full launch-day peak at 27,933. That is 543 players ahead of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined’s 27,390, and more than 17,000 behind Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake’s 45,357. For example, the two nearest launches on that list were separated by fewer than 600 players, while the leader finished more than 17,000 clear of the field. The first Final Fantasy in HD-2D reached a real audience, and a smaller one than the biggest HD-2D launch. Those are concurrent players, not sales, and most Steam titles peak over their first weekend, so the gap can still close.
