Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Early Access opens Friday, October 16, 2026, one week before the global launch on October 23. Anyone who digitally pre-ordered the Digital Standard ($69.99) or Digital Vault ($99.99) edition qualifies, per the Call of Duty Bluesky announcement on October 15. Physical Standard buyers and Game Pass subscribers don’t qualify. During the Early Access window only the single-player Campaign unlocks. Multiplayer and DMZ stay locked until later dates, so this is a campaign-only preview for paid digital pre-orders.
Quick answer
- Pre-order a digital edition (Digital Standard at $69.99 or Digital Vault at $99.99). Physical Standard is excluded by Activision’s terms.
- Install the preload on PC if you haven’t already. PC preload opened at 9:00 AM PT on October 15, 2026 through Steam, Battle.net, and Xbox on PC per Activision’s release time page. Console preload times haven’t been announced as of October 15.
- Link your Activision ID to every platform account you’ll play on (PSN, Xbox, Battle.net/Steam, Nintendo). Two-factor authentication must be active, and the unlink cooldown is 12 months per Activision.
- Launch Modern Warfare 4 on October 16. Sign in with the Activision ID tied to your pre-order. The Campaign tile in the main menu unlocks first; Multiplayer and DMZ stay greyed out.
- Play through the week. Multiplayer and DMZ unlock on October 20 for the same pre-order group, and the full game rolls out on October 23 at midnight local time, so by then your Campaign progress carries into the full launch.
Who gets MW4 Campaign Early Access
Activision’s pre-order benefits page on Xbox Wire, carried on Activision’s marketing materials, lists two eligible editions and three excluded groups.
| Edition | Price | Campaign Early Access | DMZ Early Access (Oct 20) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital Standard | $69.99 | Yes | Yes |
| Digital Vault | $99.99 | Yes | Yes |
| Physical Standard (PS5, Xbox disc) | $69.99 | No | No |
| Game Pass subscribers | n/a | No | No (Holiday 2027 per Xbox) |
| PS Plus Extra / Premium | n/a | No | No (no Activision first-party on Sony’s service) |
Physical Standard buyers don’t get Campaign Early Access because the disc isn’t tied to a digital pre-order, per the MW4 Editions Compared guide. The disc ships the full game on October 23. It’s the only path for players who refuse digital downloads entirely. Game Pass subscribers have a Holiday 2027 window per our MW4 on Game Pass explainer. The October 16 window is purely for paid pre-orders.
If you buy Digital Standard today, you qualify immediately and your account gets flagged for the Oct 16 activation without any extra steps beyond the standard pre-order checkout. If you switch from Physical Standard to Digital Standard before launch, Activision’s pre-order terms treat the digital purchase as the qualifying one, so you can still qualify.
When does MW4 Campaign Early Access start?
Activision confirmed the October 16, 2026 date in its #MW4 Campaign Early Access begins October 16 post on October 15. The post didn’t publish a specific unlock hour. The pattern across recent Call of Duty entries (Black Ops 7, Cold War) has been midnight local time on each platform’s store, so the working assumption is that the Campaign tile appears at 12:00 AM in your local time zone on October 16. We’ll update this guide the moment Activision publishes an exact time.
A practical translation:
- Pacific Time (US West): the campaign appears in your main menu at 12:00 AM PT on October 16.
- Eastern Time (US East): 3:00 AM ET on October 16.
- UK / GMT: 7:00 AM GMT on October 16 (UK is in BST until the October 25 clock change).
- Central Europe (CEST): 9:00 AM CEST on October 16.
- Tokyo (JST): 4:00 PM JST on October 16.
Treat these as estimates anchored on the midnight-local pattern from prior years. If the campaign tile doesn’t appear at 12:00 AM local, fully exit and relaunch the Modern Warfare 4 client. Activision’s unlocks sometimes take a few minutes to apply across regional stores.
What’s playable during MW4 Campaign Early Access
The October 16 window unlocks only the Campaign mode. Multiplayer, DMZ, and the new Warzone map stay locked. Per the MW4 Multiplayer Beginner’s Guide and Xbox Wire multiplayer deep-dive, the launch map set (Silkworm, Lotus, Lithium, and the modular Kill Block) only goes live when Multiplayer unlocks later.
What you can do during the Early Access window:
- Play the MW4 campaign from start to finish. This is Modern Warfare 4’s single-player story mode. Specific mission count and play time haven’t been published by Activision. We’ll update this guide with the mission count and average run time once an official or first-wave review source publishes them.
- Earn Operator XP and Battle Pass XP toward Season 1. Any progress you make in the campaign unlocks Operator cosmetics and Battle Pass tiers that carry into the full launch. The same Operator pool is used across Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ.
- Test movement and weapons in the firing range. The new mantle slide, pipe climbs, and supine slide mechanics from the multiplayer build are available in the campaign’s firing range, so you can rehearse them before the multiplayer launch on October 23.
What stays locked until October 20 (DMZ Early Access) or October 23 (full launch):
- All multiplayer modes including Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, and Kill Confirmed.
- DMZ extraction mode on the new Hajin map.
- The new Korean Peninsula-style Warzone map.
- The full multiplayer map rotation across Silkworm, Lotus, Lithium, and Kill Block.
How to start the campaign on October 16
Once your account is ready, the activation is one click. Log into Modern Warfare 4 with the Activision ID tied to your pre-order and select the Campaign tile in the main menu. The step-by-step:
- Open Modern Warfare 4 on the platform where you pre-ordered (PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam/Battle.net/Xbox app, or Switch 2 once the digital storefront supports it). Sign in with the same Activision ID you used at checkout.
- Select the Campaign tile. It’s the leftmost option in the top row of the main menu. If it’s greyed out, your Activision ID isn’t linked to the pre-order.
- Start Chapter 1. Pick your difficulty (Recruit, Regular, Hardened, or Veteran) and start the campaign. Saved progress auto-syncs to your Activision ID.
- Pause and replay missions through the Campaign tile menu. There are multiple mission-select chapters once you’ve launched the campaign for the first time, so you can replay any completed level without restarting.
If the Campaign tile doesn’t appear:
- On Steam, fully close and exit the client, then relaunch. Steam sometimes needs a hard restart to apply store unlocks.
- On Battle.net, log out of the Blizzard launcher entirely and back in.
- On PlayStation and Xbox, check that the Modern Warfare 4 listing in your library shows “Eligible for Early Access” before launching.
- If none of that works, your pre-order may have been placed on a different platform account than the one you’re signed in to. The pre-order and the launched account must share the same Activision ID.
When does the Campaign Early Access end?
The window technically ends on October 23 at midnight local time in your time zone, when the full game unlocks for everyone. At that moment the Campaign Early Access window closes. Multiplayer and DMZ also unlock for the same pre-order group on that date, and on October 23 the same unlocks apply to non-pre-orders. DMZ Early Access opens October 20 at midnight local time for the same Digital Standard and Digital Vault pre-order group. That gives you a three-day head start on extraction mode before the rest of the player base joins.
Once the full game unlocks on October 23, you keep all your campaign progress, Operator XP, and Battle Pass progress; nothing resets. The only thing the Early Access window adds is seven extra days of single-player access plus DMZ three days early on October 20.
How long is the MW4 campaign?
Activision hasn’t published an official mission count or average run time as of October 15. The MW3 predecessor’s 2023 campaign ran 5-7 hours for the main story on Regular difficulty. Modern Warfare 4’s campaign adds a Coalition faction branching element for the player character, but Infinity Ward’s history suggests a comparable campaign length. We’ll update this section with the verified mission count and first-pass completion times once the review embargo lifts.
MW4 Campaign Early Access vs MW2 and MW3 history
The 7-day pre-launch campaign window is now Activision’s standard pattern. The table below compares MW4 to recent Call of Duty releases.
| Game | EA window | Edition requirement | What was unlocked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modern Warfare 4 (Oct 2026) | 7 days (Oct 16-23) | Digital Standard, Digital Vault | Campaign only |
| Modern Warfare III (Nov 2023) | ~1 week | Digital pre-order | Campaign only |
| Black Ops 7 (Oct 2025) | 7 days | Digital pre-order | Campaign only |
| Black Ops Cold War (Nov 2020) | 1 week | Digital pre-order | Campaign only |
For each of those launches, the multi-day head start on the single-player story was the headline pre-order perk. Game Pass and PS Plus were never part of the unlock during the EA window. The 2026 MW4 window matches that precedent.
FAQ
Does Physical Standard give you Campaign Early Access?
No. Activision’s pre-order benefits list only Digital Standard and Digital Vault as eligible for the October 16 window. Physical Standard buyers get the full game on October 23, not the campaign a week early. The MW4 Editions Compared guide explains the platform-by-platform disc situation. This includes the Switch 2 physical version slated to arrive after digital launch per Activision.
Can I upgrade from Standard to Vault after pre-ordering?
Yes, the upgrade costs $30 in the in-game store or your platform store after launch on October 23. The upgrade doesn’t apply retroactively to Campaign Early Access. Buying Standard and upgrading in the first week doesn’t extend your Oct 16 activation. It does add the Vault content (Signature Weapons, BlackCell Season 1, Operator Packs) once launch lands. The upgrade doesn’t stack with the 10% Loyalty Discount per Activision’s terms.
If I pre-ordered Standard, do I get the Hunter Killer Operator Skin and Gilded Pearl Camo?
Yes, both the Hunter Killer Operator Skin (for Black Ops 7 and Warzone) and the Gilded Pearl Weapon Camo Pack unlock on pre-order, per the MW4 Pre-Order Guide. Both rewards must be redeemed by October 23, 2027 per Activision’s footnotes. Miss the redemption window and you lose the cosmetic, with no exceptions.
Will my campaign progress carry over to launch day?
Yes. All Operator XP, Battle Pass XP, and unlocks earned in the campaign tie to your Activision ID and carry into the full launch. Weapon XP and camo progress on weapons you pick up in the campaign missions also persists. The only thing that doesn’t carry over between platforms is COD Points. COD Points purchased on one store lock to that store. COD Points earned through the Battle Pass lock to the platform where you earned the tier. Items bought with COD Points do cross platforms, as covered in the Is MW4 Cross-Platform explainer.
Can I play the Early Access with friends who pre-ordered too?
Campaign Early Access is a single-player mode, so co-op through it isn’t an option for this window. The campaign shares the same Activision ID-based progression with the multiplayer modes your friends will unlock on October 20 and October 23. Your unlocks carry into the same player pool after launch. The MW4 Crossplay explainer walks through how the Activision ID links cross-platform.
Does Game Pass include the October 16 window?
No. Our Game Pass explainer covers the full breakdown, but the short version is this: Modern Warfare 4 is not on Xbox Game Pass on day one. Microsoft has confirmed a Holiday 2027 inclusion on the books but no earlier access. The October 16 window is strictly for paid Digital Standard or Digital Vault pre-orders.
What to do today if you want to play on October 16
- Verify your Activision ID is linked to the platform you’ll play on. The link must be in place before the activation applies. You can’t link after October 15 and expect the campaign to unlock the next day.
- Start the PC preload now. PC preload opened at 9:00 AM PT on October 15 per the MW4 release time guide, and a 115 GB SSD download on a slower connection is the only realistic way to miss the Oct 16 activation.
- Set up two-factor authentication on your Activision account. Unlinking a platform is gated to once every 12 months, so this is a set-it-and-forget-it moment.
- Decide on Digital Vault if you can spare the extra $30 and you’ll be online most of Season 1. BlackCell, the Signature Weapon Collection, and the Operator Packs are most useful if you actually plan to play ranked. The MW4 Editions Compared guide walks through the math.
Our read
The Campaign Early Access window is real value for the right player. If you mainly care about Modern Warfare 4’s single-player story and you’re going to play through it anyway, the seven extra days beat the alternative of waiting until October 23. If you mostly bought MW4 for Multiplayer or Warzone, the Early Access adds no value because those modes stay locked until October 20 and October 23 respectively. The October 16 activation is the same set of unlocks that goes out for full launch on October 23. Anyone who pre-ordered Digital Standard or Digital Vault paid for seven extra days of single-player.
The Practical translation table above carries an asterisk. It’s anchored on the midnight-local pattern from Black Ops 7 and Cold War. Activision hasn’t yet published a specific unlock hour for October 16. If Activision announces a different hour on its Bluesky or Xbox Wire page, we’ll update this guide with the official time the moment it lands. Until then, midnight local is the best working assumption.
The bigger launch story is the staggered rollout: Campaign on October 16, DMZ on October 20, full game on October 23. Each pre-order unlock is a separate moment, and the MW4 release time guide catalogs every unlock window in one place. For everything else on MW4 through launch and beyond, our full game hub at pixelherald.com/games/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-4/ has every guide and story we’ve published.
Two notes we’d flag for players who can only play once:
- If you finish the campaign by October 19 (the day before DMZ unlocks), you can roll straight into DMZ Early Access on October 20 with your Operator setup already calibrated. Otherwise, you’ll have a four-day gap between the campaign ending and your next play session on October 20.
- If you finish by October 22 (the day before full launch), you can take advantage of the New Zealand trick on Xbox. Set your console’s time zone to NZ to start the full game a few hours before the rest of your region, per the MW4 release time guide. Activision hasn’t confirmed the trick for MW4, but it’s worked at past Call of Duty launches.
