FFXIV Data Center Travel and Cross-Region Play, Explained

Quick answer: FFXIV runs on four physical data centers (Japan, North America, Europe, Oceania), and each physical DC splits into one to four logical DCs (Elemental, Gaia, Mana and Meteor on Japan; Aether, Crystal, Dynamis and Primal on NA; Light, Chaos and Materia on EU; and the Oceania physical DC sits alone). Free World Visit travel is allowed between every World on the same logical DC; paid Data Center Travel lets one character swap logical DCs for a longer stay; and the new same-region player matching (rolled out to the Japan data center on October 13, 2026 via the Lodestone “Rolling Out Same-region Player Matching for the Japan Data Center!” topic) opens up Duty Finder, Party Finder, Crystalline Conflict Ranked, Cross-world Linkshells, PvP Teams and Fellowships across every logical DC inside the same physical DC, with North America and Europe scheduled to follow before the Evercold expansion in January 2027.

This is the standing reference page for FFXIV cross-region play. The Lodestone’s “How Do Data Centers Function?” diagram on the Server Status page is the canonical visual aid and the source for the table below; this page converts it into the question-and-answer shape that “ffxiv cross region” actually gets typed as.

How FFXIV splits players across regions

Physical Data Center Region Logical Data Centers Why it exists
Japan JP Elemental, Gaia, Mana, Meteor All Japanese-resident Worlds; English language is supported on each.
North America NA Aether, Crystal, Dynamis, Primal Eight Worlds per logical DC; English-speaking.
Europe EU Light, Chaos, Materia English-speaking (JP, NA and EU are all English-compatible, though the Japanese experience is localized for Japanese players first).
Oceania OCE (single logical DC) Sits on the same physical infrastructure as a logical DC whose Worlds were promoted to a new home in Patch 5.5. Travel to JP is the only cross-region allowed under Data Center Travel.

Each character has one Home World. Free World Visit lets you play on another World within the same logical DC. Paid Data Center Travel lets a single character change logical DCs (a one-time, paid move). Same-region player matching (the new feature in Patch 7.57, rolled out to Japan Oct 13) lets you play with players on the same physical DC regardless of logical DC. The Oceania DC is the only one without same-region matching coverage yet, because it sits alone inside its physical DC.

World Visit: how to play on another World (free)

Per the Lodestone “World Visit System” page, the World Visit system has been free and unlimited since Patch 5.5 (October 2020). The flow:

  1. Walk to the central aetheryte in Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, or Ul’dah (the Aethernet shards inside each city do not offer it).
  2. Select “Visit Another World Server.”
  3. Pick a World. Worlds you can’t enter due to congestion show up grayed out.
  4. Confirm. Once the transfer window appears, the move is non-cancellable.

World Visit restricts the following in-game actions on the visited World (quotes verbatim from the Lodestone):

  • Moogle Delivery Service: you see the red letter icon for notifications, but you must return to your Home World to collect letters and confirm purchases.
  • Retainers: can’t be summoned, hired, or released.
  • Quest acceptance: An Ill-conceived Venture (the retainer unlock) only accepts on Home World.
  • Market Board: you can buy items but not list or sell (the Companion App can still list retainer-held items on your Home World market for you).
  • Free Company: chat works; you can’t create, join, or leave the FC; FC actions don’t apply.
  • Linkshells: can’t be created, joined, quit, or even viewed.
  • Cross-world linkshells, PvP Team chat, and the Novice Network are accessible on the visited World.
  • Housing: no purchase; no sharing; Bird in Hand and the Eternal Bonding ceremony only accept on Home World.
  • Gold Saucer: Lord of Verminion and Triple Triad tournaments can’t be entered, Cactpot tickets can’t be bought.
  • Deep Dungeon: runs don’t save to leaderboards.
  • Mining / Botany: Legendary and unspoiled gathering nodes are inaccessible.
  • Calamity Salvager: belts can’t be retrieved.
  • Bonuses: Preferred or Preferred+ World bonuses don’t apply on the visited World, but Home World bonuses do.

If you log out on a visited World, that’s where you wake up next time. If you don’t log in for 30 days on the visited World, the Lodestone’s FAQ says you’re automatically returned to Home World.

Same-region player matching: the new free cross-logical-DC pool (Japan DC since Oct 13, 2026)

Same-region player matching is a separate, larger pool than World Visit. It rolls up all logical DCs inside the same physical DC into one matchmaking pool, per the Sept 16, 2026 Lodestone “Rolling Out Same-region Player Matching for the Japan Data Center!” topic. It’s currently live only on the Japan data center (Elemental, Gaia, Mana, Meteor) since the Oct 12-13, 2026 24-hour maintenance window, and Square Enix says NA and Europe are scheduled to follow before the Evercold expansion launches in January 2027.

What changes:

Feature Before (logical DC pool) After (same-region matching on)
Duty Finder Match within logical DC Match within physical DC
Party Finder Within logical DC Within physical DC
Crystalline Conflict Ranked Within host logical DC Within physical DC
Cross-world Linkshells Within logical DC Within physical DC
PvP Teams Within logical DC Within physical DC
Fellowships Within logical DC Within physical DC
Friend List (online status) Within physical DC Within physical DC
Friend List (tells / invites) Within logical DC Within physical DC (excluding during a duty)
Free Company (chat) Within logical DC Within physical DC
Linkshells on Home World No change No change
Retainers on Home World No change No change
Housing No change No change
Market Board Home World lists, any-World purchases No change
Moogle Delivery Service (notifications) Within logical DC Within physical DC

The cross-world linkshells, PvP Teams and Fellowships are merged into one database per physical DC, so duplicate names get a number appended after Oct 13, per the same Lodestone topic. Players with 9+ cross-world linkshells from data-center-travelling between DCs have those linkshells deactivated (not erased) until they use Patch 7.5’s “Organize CWLS” function.

Players on Elemental, Gaia, Mana or Meteor can travel between logical DCs on the same physical DC via World Visit (a dropdown menu at the aetheryte lists them) rather than bouncing through Data Center Travel. Cross-logical-DC travel within the Japan physical DC is now unrestricted by same-region matching, but the actual visit still goes through the World Visit system with the same restrictions listed above.

Data Center Travel: paid longer-stay cross-logical-DC travel

When same-region matching isn’t enough (you want to bring a Free Company with you, change Home World, or play long-term on a different logical DC), Data Center Travel is the official system. Per the Lodestone’s Data Center Travel section of the World Visit page, DCT lets a single character stay on a different logical DC for a longer stay, with its own visit-window restrictions that are similar but stricter than World Visit (you can’t return for a cooling-off period, character is locked to the visited logical DC until you use DCT to return, and the price is paid up front).

DCT’s two main use cases:

  1. Moving a character to a new logical DC: Square Enix sells one DCT token per character for the price of a Home World Transfer fee on the Mog Station. On the way over, the character loses some FC bindings (the inviting FC on the previous world stays; new FCs on the new world need to re-invite).
  2. Long visits to lower-population logical DCs: when a NA player wants to play on an OCE or JP logical DC for a stretch, DCT is the path. The same Lodestone page notes that DCT from NA to JP and the reverse are both supported, but NA to EU / EU to NA are not (NA and EU live on different physical DCs entirely and never sync up).

Costs and limits are on the Lodestone DCT page; we don’t quote the price here because it varies by World congestion and the category of transfer. Patch 7.57 did not change DCT pricing.

What you can and can’t carry across worlds

Across all three systems (World Visit, same-region matching, DCT), the limits that don’t change are:

  • Items: bound to the character or to Home World. Universal actions like equipment change, glamour, gear upgrades, mount summoning and emotes work on the visited World as long as they’re character-unlocked.
  • Gil, MGP, FC credits, retainer gil: bound to Home World. You can’t transfer them across worlds without using the Mog Station’s “Transfer Item” service (which is itself bound to your Home World for delivery).
  • Free Company status: moves with the character via DCT (the FC loses the departing member), but FC-owned amenities, FC actions and company credits stay locked to the source logical DC.
  • Housing: can’t be purchased or shared across worlds. Aetheryte Pendulum teleport only works if both players are on the same World.

How to tell whether a region can visit yours right now

Three checks, in order from simplest to most detailed:

  1. Find your Home World on the Lodestone’s Server Status page. The table lists Worlds grouped by physical DC, logical DC, and current status (Standard / Preferred / Preferred+ / Congested / Partial Maintenance).
  2. Check the “Last Update” line on the World Visit page. It shows when the visit rules last changed.
  3. Look up Patch 7.57 patch notes for same-region matching progress. As of the Oct 12-13, 2026 maintenance, only Japan has it on. EU and NA are scheduled before Evercold in January 2027.

If a region’s same-region matching isn’t live yet, World Visit is still your path inside the same logical DC, and Data Center Travel is the path elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play FFXIV with someone on a different region?

It depends on which region. Same-region player matching lets you matchmake and form parties with anyone on the same physical DC regardless of logical DC: as of October 13, 2026 that means the Japan physical DC (Elemental, Gaia, Mana, Meteor). North America and Europe are scheduled to gain same-region matching before the Evercold expansion in January 2027 per the Lodestone topic. Oceania never gained cross-region matching because it sits alone inside its physical DC; cross-region play with Japan goes via Data Center Travel tokens.

Can I visit a friend’s World in a different logical DC?

Yes, with the World Visit system’s dropdown menu at the central aetheryte in Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, or Ul’dah. As of October 13, 2026, on the Japan data center (Elemental, Gaia, Mana, Meteor) the dropdown lists all logical DCs and Worlds across the same physical DC. The visit can be cancelled at any time during the transfer; once the move-in window appears, it can’t. Free on the World Visit page; Data Center Travel (paid) is the longer-stay option when you want to bring a character for weeks or permanent.

What is the difference between World Visit and Data Center Travel?

World Visit is free and lets you play on another World indefinitely inside the same logical DC (or, on Japan only since Oct 13, across the same physical DC via the new same-region-matching dropdown). Data Center Travel is paid and moves one character to another logical DC for a longer stay (it survives even after you log out, unlike World Visit). They’re two different things on the Lodestone page and Square Enix treats them separately: World Visit restrictions come from a 2020 patch, same-region matching from the Sept 16, 2026 Lodestone topic. Data Center Travel is for permanent-ish moves; World Visit is the day-trip.

Can I play FFXIV across NA and EU?

Not via same-region matching (those are different physical DCs) and not via World Visit (that’s logical DC only). North America and Europe live on different physical DCs, which is why Patch 7.57’s rollout is sequential: NA gets same-region matching after Japan and before the Evercold expansion window in January 2027, and the EU rollout is part of the same schedule. Until then, the only way to play with EU friends from NA is via a paid Data Center Travel character, which has the same restrictions as World Visit while on the visited DC and reverts on cooldown.

Does Data Center Travel cost gil?

Data Center Travel is paid on the Mog Station in real money, not gil. The Mog Station’s pricing varies by World and the type of transfer; we don’t quote a single number because it changes. The transfer happens the moment you confirm; you can’t cancel once the move-in window appears, same as World Visit. After the transfer, the character is on the destination DC and the Home World Transfer service is paused 30 minutes before and after every FFXIV maintenance window, so plan around the published maintenance schedule (our FFXIV maintenance standing page has the current window).

When is cross-region matchmaking coming to NA and EU?

Square Enix says NA and Europe are scheduled to get same-region player matching before the Evercold expansion in January 2027, per the Sept 16, 2026 Lodestone topic that introduced the feature. The Tokyo Fan Festival keynote (the third and final Fan Festival before Evercold) is October 30, 2026 at 10:00 p.m. ET and is expected to confirm the exact Jan 2027 launch date. Until then, Japan-only has it.

What does “Wanderer” mean next to a character name?

It’s the marker that Square Enix uses for players visiting from another World within the same logical DC (or, with same-region matching, the same physical DC). A Wanderer prefix appears next to their character name in Party Finder, chat and on-screen, so you know they aren’t a Home World resident. Wanderers can’t bring FC, Linkshells, Retainers, Market Board listings or Housing onto the visited World — they show up empty-handed for anything tied to Home World.

Will NA or EU break if everyone on Aether tries to matchmake with everyone on Dynamis?

No. Square Enix runs the same-region matching regional rollout behind high-traffic dry-runs; the JP data center launched it on Oct 13, 2026 without an announced cap or queue, and Square Enix explicitly says it will roll out “in turn” to other data centers after the Japan rollout is confirmed stable. Until then, NA and EU function as eight-separate-Worlds-per-logical-DC anyway, with cross-Logical-DC matching off; queue times for low-population duties are the same as before Patch 7.57. The roll-out is exactly the quality-of-life change that would cause the queue-versus-quality tradeoff issues if rushed, which is why SE is staging it.

The reason an FFXIV cross-region page earns a place in our long-running coverage even before NA and Europe go live with the new matching is the same reason the same-region matching rollout happened with very little warning: players on low-population Worlds (Materia in EU, several Materia + some Chaos Worlds in EU) have asked SE for cross-logical-DC Duty Finder since Patch 5.5’s World Visit era, and SE’s data center split created a long-running duty-queue gap on those Worlds. The October 13 rollout to Japan is the first operational proof that same-region matching works in production, and the January 2027 NA/EU rollout will close the same gap on the Western side. That gives this page roughly 90 days of being the most useful explanation of the system in English before SE publishes their own documentation, and every “ffxiv cross region” / “can I play with EU friends from NA” / “do I need Data Center Travel to play on Gaia” search between now and January 2027 lands here.

The next concrete step is the Tokyo Fan Festival keynote on October 30, 2026 at 10:00 p.m. ET, where Square Enix will likely confirm the exact NA / EU same-region matching rollout dates and the Jan 2027 expansion date. When those dates land, this page gets an “Updated October/November :” line at the top with the new schedule and a link to the Fan Festival coverage. The Japan-only same-region matching date (Oct 13) and the data center structure table are the only pieces of the page that will change post-launch; the World Visit and Data Center Travel sections stay static until Square Enix revises them.

We compiled the data center structure table from the Lodestone “How Do Data Centers Function?” diagram on the Server Status page and the Lodestone “World Visit System / Data Center Travel System” page. The same-region matching feature, the Before/After table and the Oct 13 Japan rollout come from the Sept 16, 2026 Lodestone “Rolling Out Same-region Player Matching for the Japan Data Center!” topic. Maintenance timing for the rollout was the Oct 12-13 24-hour window covered in our earlier FF14 24-Hour Maintenance news post and on the FFXIV maintenance standing page at /final-fantasy-14-maintenance-next-downtime-and-when-servers-come-back/. Data Center Travel pricing was not quoted because Square Enix varies it by transfer type and Home World congestion; check the Mog Station for the live number. The Tokyo Fan Festival 2026 dates come from the Lodestone “Fan Festival 2026 in Tokyo Stage & Stream Schedule” topic; all Saints’ Wake is a separate Oct 15 – Nov 1 seasonal event topic and doesn’t affect cross-region play.
