Modern Warfare 4 arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on Friday, October 23, 2026 at midnight local time, per Activision’s official Switch 2 announcement carried on Xbox Wire. It’s the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo console since 2013’s Ghosts on Wii U, and the first current-gen CoD on Switch 2. Pricing, performance and the crossplay story are all different on Switch 2 than on PS5 or Xbox, so this guide covers what’s confirmed, what’s still in flux, and what Switch 2 players need to know going into launch.

Quick answer

  • Price: $69.99 digital Standard, $99.99 digital Vault, $69.99 physical Standard.
  • Performance: Campaign locked at 30 fps per Nintendo Life; multiplayer target hasn’t been disclosed.
  • Upscaling: DLSS (Nvidia AI upscaler) or Filmic SMAA T2X (Infinity Ward’s in-house option), plus an AMD FidelityFX CAS sharpening slider.
  • Storage: A Switch 2 physical cartridge ships with the game; data install is required. Activision hasn’t published the exact install size.
  • Crossplay: Yes, with PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC; cross-progression follows your Activision ID.
  • Controllers: Standard gamepad, Pro Controller, Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, gyro aiming, HDR; TV, tabletop and handheld modes.
  • Online: Nintendo Switch Online required for multiplayer and DMZ.
  • Physical Standard release: Ships later than the digital launch per Activision.

Price on Switch 2

The US Nintendo eShop lists Modern Warfare 4 at $69.99 for the digital Standard Edition and $99.99 for the digital Vault Edition, per the eShop Standard and Vault listings. The physical Standard Edition is sold at retailers for $69.99. The Vault upgrade from Standard costs $30, available in the in-game or eShop store after launch.

The Switch 2 edition prices match the PS5, Xbox and PC pricing exactly: $69.99 Standard, $99.99 Vault. A Vault Loyalty Discount is available to players who owned and played a Call of Duty title released in 2019 or later on the same platform account; it takes 10% off Vault, dropping it to $89.99 for eligible accounts. The discount only applies to fresh Vault pre-orders, expires at launch on October 23, and does not apply to the $30 Standard-to-Vault upgrade.

The Switch 2 physical disc arrives after the digital launch per Activision’s pre-order benefits page, so on launch night (October 23), Switch 2 buyers can only buy digital. The PS5 and Xbox Series X disc versions launch with the game on October 23. There’s no Game Pass option on any platform: Modern Warfare 4 isn’t on Xbox Game Pass at launch (Holiday 2027 per Xbox’s own communications). Sony’s PS Plus Extra/Premium doesn’t include Activision-published first-party games at launch.

Performance and upscaling

The Switch 2 port runs the campaign at a locked 30 fps target with no big frame-rate dips, per Nintendo Life’s Gavin Lane first impressions. Digital Foundry’s Tom Morgan plans a full deep-dive on the final build; until then, the campaign preview is the closest thing to a public benchmark.

In the Graphics settings, the Switch 2 version exposes three image-quality options:

  • Nvidia DLSS is Nvidia’s AI-based upscaler. It renders the game at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs the final image with machine-learning models trained on game content.
  • Filmic SMAA T2X is Infinity Ward’s in-house anti-aliasing solution. It smooths jagged edges without the AI upscaling step, and works at the same base resolution as DLSS in the Switch 2 build.
  • AMD FidelityFX CAS (Contrast Adaptive Sharpening) is a separate post-processing slider in the Quality menu. It’s a sharpening pass rather than a full upscaler.

Nintendo Life’s Lane reported that he “struggled to perceive much of a difference” between DLSS and Filmic SMAA in the campaign, especially in hectic scenes. Morgan’s still-image analysis favors DLSS for cleaner straight edges and sharper textures on door decals and foliage. The two upscalers appear to run at the same base resolution and only differ in how the final image is reconstructed. The dual-upscaler choice is unusual for a Switch 2 third-party port: most Switch 2 builds lock one method or lean on FSR-only, so Infinity Ward shipping both DLSS and an in-house option signals the team was chasing the cleanest image possible at a fixed 30fps.

Activision hasn’t published a multiplayer frame-rate target for the Switch 2 version. The 30 fps campaign target is what Nintendo Life confirmed; the multiplayer target could be different.

Crossplay and cross-progression

MW4 has crossplay on by default across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Battle.net, Xbox on PC) and Switch 2. Console players can opt out of crossplay in Settings, which restricts them to same-platform matches but reduces mixed-input lobbies. Cross-progression follows your Activision ID rather than a single platform account.

Activision ID setup before October 20 (DMZ Early Access):

  1. Link your Activision ID to every platform account you might play on (PSN, Xbox, Battle.net/Steam, Nintendo). One Activision ID per platform provider.
  2. Set up two-factor authentication. Unlinking and relinking is gated to roughly once per 12 months, per Activision’s profile management page.
  3. On PC specifically, Activision requires a phone number linked to the Activision account and TPM 2.0 + Secure Boot enabled in your motherboard’s UEFI.
  4. On consoles, you need an active PS Plus, Game Pass Essential, or Nintendo Switch Online subscription to play multiplayer online.

On Switch 2, Nintendo Switch Online is the equivalent of PS Plus and Game Pass for online play. Without an active NSO subscription, you can play the single-player campaign offline, but multiplayer and DMZ stay locked. Our Is Modern Warfare 4 Cross-Platform? explainer walks through the linking process in more detail.

Controllers and input

Activision’s August 2026 Switch 2 announcement lists the following input options:

  • Standard gamepad support (any Switch 2-compatible controller).
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller support.
  • Joy-Con 2 mouse controls (the Switch 2’s optional mouse-mode input).
  • Gyro aiming for fine-tuning aim with motion controls.
  • Play modes: TV mode, tabletop mode, and handheld mode.

Mouse-mode Joy-Con 2 controls give the Switch 2 version an input option that’s hard to replicate on other consoles. Whether this gives Switch 2 players an actual competitive advantage is the same debate as on PC: a high-precision pointer helps with tracking at range, but the game’s recoil and aim-assist systems are tuned for controllers, so the effect is mostly comfort, not raw aim.

Storage and install size

Activision hasn’t published the exact Switch 2 install size as of this guide. The PC version needs 115 GB of SSD space, per Activision’s official PC requirements, and the Switch 2 physical cart ships with the full game. Modern Nintendo Switch 2 ports of similarly-sized games (Hitman: Absolution Switch 2 port, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade) run between 50 GB and 90 GB on the cartridge itself.

The Switch 2 uses cartridge-based distribution plus a required data install for most retail games. A high-capacity microSD card is recommended for any current-gen Call of Duty port. Update the Switch 2 firmware before launch day: Activision has confirmed that the game requires the latest system software for the upscaling options to work.

What’s not yet confirmed for Switch 2

A few details Activision hasn’t published for the Switch 2 version:

  • Multiplayer frame-rate target. The 30 fps campaign target is confirmed, but the multiplayer target could be 30, 40 or 60 fps. Most Switch 2 third-party ports target 30 or 40 fps in multiplayer.
  • Performance mode vs quality mode. The PS5 and Xbox Series X versions can target 60 fps in multiplayer; Switch 2 may lock to a single mode, or offer a choice.
  • HDR support. The August 2026 announcement listed HDR; some Switch 2 displays support HDR10, but most Switch 2 outputs are SDR. The PS5 and Xbox versions have a more robust HDR implementation.
  • Switch 2 Pro Controller specific features (HD rumble, NFC amiibo support for Call of Duty operator skins). Activision hasn’t commented on amiibo support.
  • Keyboard and mouse support. USB keyboard and mouse support is a Switch 2 Pro Controller feature on certain games; Activision hasn’t confirmed USB input for MW4.

Co-development: Infinity Ward + Digital Legends

The Switch 2 port is being developed by Infinity Ward in partnership with Digital Legends, the Barcelona studio also known for the mobile Respawnables games. The co-development split mirrors the pattern of handing big Switch 2 ports to specialist partners: Saber Interactive handled Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on Switch/Switch 2, Feral Interactive handled Hitman: Absolution on Switch 2, while Capcom shipped the Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 Switch 2 ports from internal teams on October 16.

The dual-upscaler choice (DLSS plus Filmic SMAA) is unusual for a 30 fps Switch 2 port, but it’s the same pattern the MW4 multiplayer team uses on PS5 and Xbox: Infinity Ward has shipped both DLSS and Filmic SMAA T2X on those consoles too, where the choice matters less because frame-rates are higher.

Switch 2 vs PS5/Xbox crossplay notes

A few specifics for Switch 2 players:

  • Input-based matchmaking. Switch 2 players using Joy-Con 2 mouse controls may be matched against other mouse-input players on PC and Switch 2, depending on Activision’s matchmaking rules. The default is crossplay on, but the input filter is separate.
  • Voice chat. Switch 2 doesn’t have a built-in voice chat app for MW4. Most players use Discord on a phone or PC alongside the Switch 2 game.
  • Text chat. In-game text chat works on Switch 2 in multiplayer and DMZ. The keyboard is the Switch 2 OS-level one.

Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2 is a meaningful first: it’s the first current-gen Call of Duty on a Nintendo platform in over a decade. The 30 fps campaign target is conservative, but the upscaling choice (DLSS plus Filmic SMAA) is unusual for a Switch 2 port, which suggests Infinity Ward spent serious time on the image quality at the locked 30 fps. The standard crossplay rules apply; set up your Activision ID and Nintendo Switch Online before launch day, and Switch 2 will play in the same matchmaking pool as PS5, Xbox and PC.

The bigger launch-week story is the staggered rollout: Campaign Early Access on October 16 for Digital Standard and Digital Vault pre-orders, DMZ Early Access on October 20, and the full game on October 23. Switch 2 players with a digital Vault pre-order get the same early-access window as PS5, Xbox and PC. Our MW4 release time guide has every unlock window in one place.
