Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, the Nintendo-developed 12-sport motion-control sequel to the original Switch Sports, unlocks on Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday, October 22, 2026, following the standard Nintendo eShop pattern of midnight local time per region (the same unlock rule as our #979 It Takes Two Switch 2 release time guide). In the US, that’s midnight EDT (Miami, Atlanta) on October 22 and midnight PDT (Los Angeles, Seattle) on the same night. In Europe, it lands at midnight BST in London and midnight CEST in Berlin. In Australia and New Zealand, it crosses the dateline and unlocks at midnight AEDT and NZDT on October 23 local.
The 12 sports and what changes
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is a Switch 2 exclusive and bundles 12 motion-control sports: Bowling, Archery, Boxing, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Basketball, Golf, Thumb Wrestling, Prop Plane, Skateboarding, Power Cruising, and Tennis (the same 12 modes listed on the Nintendo eShop page). Each one uses the Switch 2’s Joy-Con 2 motion controls and the Leg Strap accessory that ships with the game. Most support local wireless multiplayer and online play via Nintendo Switch Online, plus the same one-to-four-player couch format that the original Switch Sports built its family audience on.
The two big new additions are Prop Plane (a flight-stick mode using the Joy-Con 2 gyroscopes for banking and pitching) and Power Cruising (a jet-ski mode that leans on the Leg Strap for steering). Skateboarding and Thumb Wrestling round out the four new sports versus the original game. The returning eight are the ones Switch Sports players already know.
The Leg Strap that comes in the box is the headline new accessory. It straps to your ankle and turns the lower body into a controller for the new motion-heavy modes. Wrist straps are recommended for arm-based sports like Archery and Bowling.
Editions, accessories, and what you need
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort launches as a single $49.99 SKU on Switch 2. Online play is included for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Offline couch play (one to four Joy-Con 2 controllers) is supported without a subscription. Nintendo recommends extra Joy-Con 2 controllers for full four-player local matches.
The game is a Switch 2 exclusive, with no Nintendo Switch (original) version. It does not support cross-generation play with the original Switch Sports library. This is a separate purchase, not an upgrade or expansion of the existing app.
How this compares to other October Switch 2 launches
Switch Sports Resort shares the October 22 release date with Final Fantasy Resonance on the same day (Square Enix’s HD-2D RPG based on the Brave Exvius story also launches on Switch 2 / Switch / PS5 / Xbox / PC). The pre-Switch-Sports-Resort evening is also when Modern Warfare 4 (our MW4 release time guide) campaign Early Access kicks off on October 16, then DMZ on October 20, then the full Modern Warfare 4 release on October 23. Switch 2 owners are getting one more high-profile launch before the big CoD week.
Our read: this is the rare Switch 2 exclusive that the whole family can play on day one without buying four Pro Controllers. The Leg Strap is doing real work for the two new sports. If you only ever play Volleyball and Bowling you can ignore it. Pricing is in line with Nintendo’s first-party standard ($49.99 for a 12-mode sports pack, same tier as the original Switch Sports at $39.99 back in 2022), and the Nintendo Switch Online tier is unchanged.
