Jagex Cancels RuneScape Reignited Before Its December 2 Launch

RuneScape developer Jagex is the Cambridge, UK studio behind the 25-year-old MMO franchise. On October 15, Jagex officially cancelled RuneScape Reignited, the controversial fresh-economy mode it unveiled at RuneFest 2026 just ten days earlier for a December 2 launch. Game Director Mod Ryan posted the news on the official RuneScape news page, framing the reversal as a direct response to community pressure.

Reignited was supposed to let new players start from a clean slate on December 2. It came with its own Grand Exchange (RuneScape’s player-driven auction house for trading weapons and resources), separate HiScores (per-mode leaderboards for skills and feats), a Hall of Legends for first-time achievers, and Reignited-only worlds where players could not trade or join boss encounters with veteran players.

Jagex pitched it as “25 years in the making” and the headline reveal of the year’s biggest RuneFest. The pitch landed badly. Critics warned the player-base split would hollow out the existing veteran economy. Within days, players organized in-game protests. Jagex posted “Reignited: Where We Go From Here” on October 6, saying it was re-evaluating. Mod Ryan followed on October 9 with five concessions, including letting veterans use existing accounts to start Reignited characters and removing Reignited-only worlds entirely. None of those compromises shipped.

“It is clear that we missed the mark on this,” Mod Ryan wrote on October 15, “and so we are not moving forward with it.” The reasoning leaned on the studio’s longest-running scar. “The last time we didn’t listen to player feedback, combat changed forever,” Mod Ryan wrote. “And it has taken us over a decade to recover from that.” That is a direct reference to Evolution of Combat (EOC), the 2012 combat overhaul that fractured the RuneScape community for years and is still debated on r/runescape today.

What still ships on December 2 is the Adventure Guide (an in-game onboarding tutorial covering the first 50 hours of play) and the first part of the Remastered Journey, the studio’s name for its visual and quality-of-life pass on the early-game map. There is also a fresh incentive: any character that has not held a paid membership since June 2, 2026 will get free access to RuneScape members’ worlds for a 10-day window from December 2 through December 12. Plugins go live on Monday, October 19, on a separate feature track Jagex has been quietly building since RuneFest. Mod Ryan added that the 2027 roadmap remains intact: Agility skill rework, a grandmaster quest closure, and the Hoard of Dragons storyline starting in January.

Our read: This is Jagex owning the same mistake twice in one month and choosing the survivable path. The Fresh Start Worlds experiment in 2022 was opt-in, time-limited, and had a planned economy merge; Reignited was supposed to be its permanent cousin. Instead, Jagex tried to make the reset the default for new accounts and tied it to the franchise’s 25th anniversary. The split-economy pitch made sense in the design room and was an instant losing argument with the people who have been logging in since 2003. Pulling the plug two weeks before launch is cheaper than launching a mode the veterans were already protest-bugging. The free members trial from December 2 to December 12 is the studio quietly running the “let new players see the game on us” play that Reignited was supposed to fund.

Reset mode Year Default for new accounts Veteran merge planned Outcome
Fresh Start Worlds 2022 No (opt-in limited event) Yes, scheduled Wound down; economy merged into main game
RuneScape Reignited 2026 Yes (December 2 launch) No (separate economy) Cancelled 12 days before launch

Compare the reversal with two stories from this week: SEGA walked back on Total War: SHOGUN 2 after Creative Assembly pulled the Complete Edition remaster over its own backlash, and House House confirmed Big Walk would not come to Xbox under its BDS boycott stance. Three studios, three different pressures, all responding within hours. The thing worth watching: the October 19 Plugins launch is now the next test of whether Mod Ryan’s team can ship meaningful updates without lighting the community on fire each time.
