Dragon Quest Monsters Editions Compared: Standard vs Digital Deluxe

Quick answer:

  • Buy the $59.99 Standard Edition if you want to start on launch day, December 3, and you are happy to play a monster-collecting RPG without extra packs.
  • Buy the $94.99 Digital Deluxe Edition if you want to start two days early on December 1 and you want the DLC 4-ITEM SET plus the “Way of the Wrangler” item set.
  • The $35 difference buys early access and extras, not story content. Square Enix’s own announcement describes the Deluxe as the main game plus four content packs, one item set and 48 hours of early access.
  • Pre-order by January 5, 2027 at 8:59 a.m. PST if you want the Adventure Starter Set, which comes with either edition.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is Square Enix’s creature-collecting RPG, developed with TOSE, and it launches on December 3, 2026. It is a game you buy once and play forever, with a demo out now if you want to try the opening first.

The Digital Deluxe Edition is Square Enix’s name for the pre-order bundle: the main game plus four extra content packs, one item set and 48 hours of early access. Steam files it under an Advance Access heading, its label for the pre-release window that opens on December 1.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World editions compared

Square Enix sells the game on Steam as two separate packages. These are the US prices and contents as listed on the Steam store page:

Standard Edition Digital Deluxe Edition
Price on Steam $59.99 $94.99
First playable day December 3 Advance Access from December 1, 2026
Main game Yes Yes
DLC 4-ITEM SET (The Mega Mole Hole, Monster Marathons, Metallic Ring, Scout Run VIP Card) No Yes
“Way of the Wrangler” purchase bonus (Necklace of Animation, 10x Beastie Bites, 10x Seeds of Skill) No Yes
Early Purchase Bonus: Adventure Starter Set Yes Yes
Digital Version Purchase Bonus: Hearty Meat Set Yes Yes

Other storefronts set their own prices, so the console editions listed on our release-date page can cost more or less than the Steam figures above.

What the $35 upgrade gets you

Square Enix’s official pre-purchase announcement lists the Digital Deluxe Edition as “the main game of DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Withered World and four packs of additional content, plus a selection of items to help raise stronger monsters,” and adds a purchase bonus of 1x Necklace of Animation, 10x Beastie Bites, 10x Seeds of Skill and 48 hours of early access.

That is the whole premium: two extra days and four side content packs. The campaign itself is the same game in both editions, and the four packs are sold separately as well, which is the warning the store page prints next to the bundle contents.

Pre-order bonuses and their deadlines

Two bonus sets ride on the pre-order, and both are claimed from “Check Additional Content” in the in-game menu:

  • Adventure Starter Set: the early purchase bonus, worth 10x Monster Munchies, 3x Bonus Balls and 5x Seeds of Skill. Square Enix says you only get it if you buy the main game or the Digital Deluxe Edition by January 5, 2027 at 8:59 a.m. PST.
  • Hearty Meat Set: the digital version purchase bonus, worth 5x Monster Munchies, 5x Smoked Sirloins and 5x Meaty Treats, and only on digital purchases.

That deadline is the date to write on a calendar. After it passes, the starter set is gone and only the meat set remains.

Can you upgrade from Standard to Deluxe later?

Steam’s page lists no upgrade path between the two editions. They sit as separate packages, with no “upgrade edition” link on the Standard purchase to move you over after launch. If you think you will want the four content packs or the two-day head start, the decision has to be made at checkout.

Is the demo worth playing, and can you carry your monsters over?

The free demo covers the start of the story up to the conclusion of the events in Witherwood, according to Square Enix’s demo announcement. Two details matter before you spend money:

  • Only rank G and rank F monsters can be befriended in the demo.
  • Up to eight monsters from your main party and reserves transfer into the full game, but they arrive at level 1 with their default talents, and the transfer only works if you played the demo and the full game on the same platform and account.

Items, gold and anything else you pick up in the demo do not carry over. Playing the demo also hands you the Wrangler’s Bundle in the full game: 1x Ring of Impulse, 1x Bonus Ball and 5x Smoked Sirloin.

The two Steam packages work out like this: the Digital Deluxe costs $35 more than the Standard, at $94.99 against $59.99, and that $35 buys 48 hours of access plus four content packs and one item set. For example, the DLC 4-ITEM SET inside the Deluxe (The Mega Mole Hole, Monster Marathons, Metallic Ring and Scout Run VIP Card) is worth the money only if you play the side content it adds, not the campaign. That makes it a cheap way to buy two days and an expensive way to buy extras. The demo settles the bigger question: eight transferable monsters are enough to show whether the befriend-raise-synthesize loop is what you want to spend a winter on.

Which platforms does it launch on, and when?

The game launches on December 3 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store, per our release date page. In Japan the game is called Dragon Quest Monsters 4.

One Switch-specific warning from that page: the Switch and Switch 2 versions do not share save data and there is no upgrade path between them, so buy the version for the console you actually own.

Which edition should you buy?

  • You want to start on December 3 and keep it simple: Standard at $59.99.
  • You want two days early and the four content packs: Digital Deluxe at $94.99.
  • You are undecided: play the free demo first, then buy Standard. Up to eight monsters move over, which is enough to tell you whether the loop holds up.
  • You own both a Switch and a Switch 2: buy the version for the console you actually use. The two versions do not share save data, and there is no upgrade path between them.

Does Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World have a physical copy?

Square Enix’s published listings for the game are digital only. The Steam store page and the two official announcements are digital-only, and no physical-edition announcement appears in any of them for the December launch. Console retail copies may still appear through normal console stores, so treat “physical copy” as unconfirmed and check the retailer’s own listing before you order.

How much does Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World cost?

$59.99 for the Standard Edition and $94.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition on Steam in the US. The demo is free, and the game launches on December 3 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2 and PC.

What’s the difference between the Standard and Digital Deluxe editions?

The Deluxe adds the DLC 4-ITEM SET (The Mega Mole Hole, Monster Marathons, Metallic Ring and Scout Run VIP Card), the “Way of the Wrangler” item set and 48 hours of early access starting December 1. Both editions include the main game and both pre-order bonus sets.

Can I play the Digital Deluxe Edition early?

Yes. Steam lists the Deluxe with Advance Access starting December 1, 2026, two days before launch day. The Standard Edition has no early access listed.

How long are the pre-order bonuses available?

The Adventure Starter Set requires a purchase by the early purchase deadline. The Hearty Meat Set is a digital-purchase bonus without an end date published in the announcement.

Can I transfer monsters from the demo into the full game?

Up to eight, from your party and reserves, and only if you play both versions on the same platform and account. Transferred monsters arrive at level 1 with their default talents. Items and gold do not transfer at all.

Is Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World on Game Pass or PS Plus?

Nothing in Square Enix’s official store listings and announcements mentions Game Pass or PS Plus inclusion for the December launch. The game is sold directly through Steam, the Microsoft Store and the console stores. We will update this page if Square Enix or a platform holder announces a subscription version.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is on our Release Calendar and in the November 2026 release list, and the game’s page on Pixel Herald collects every story we have run on it.
