Minecraft unlocks its native Nintendo Switch 2 edition on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, per the Nintendo eShop US page, following the standard Nintendo eShop pattern of midnight local time per region (the same unlock rule as our Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Switch 2 launch guide and our It Takes Two Switch 2 release time guide). In the US, that lands at midnight EDT on October 27 on the East Coast (Miami, Atlanta, New York) and 9 PM PDT on October 26 on the West Coast (Los Angeles, Seattle). In Europe, the game unlocks at midnight GMT in London and midnight CET in Berlin on October 27 (UK and EU clocks went back the previous Sunday). Australia and New Zealand get it first, at midnight AEDT and NZDT on October 27 local.

The Switch 2 version is the first native port of Minecraft to Nintendo’s new console; the original Switch edition has been on the eShop since 2018 and stays there at its $29.99 price point. The Switch 2 edition runs at a higher resolution and frame rate than the original Switch build, with Vibrant Visuals (Minecraft’s official graphics overhaul) enabled out of the box. The Nintendo eShop page lists the estimated file size at 1.2 GB, with the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack bundled in at no extra cost. Cross-platform play with PC, mobile, console and Xbox players requires a Microsoft Account, and online multiplayer still needs an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Existing Nintendo Switch worlds carry over to the Switch 2 edition.

Editions, upgrade path, and what you pay

The base Minecraft Standard Edition for Switch 2 is $29.99 on the Nintendo eShop US, the same price as the current Switch version. The Deluxe Collection adds four cosmetic packs and 30 days of Realms Plus; the Ultimate Collection adds another six cosmetic packs, a 12-month Marketplace Pass, and the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack is already in the base game on Switch 2 (no extra cost). Switch 1 digital owners get the Switch 2 Standard Edition for free if they already own a digital copy of Minecraft on Switch; the free upgrade offer runs through January 31, 2027, per the Nintendo eShop publisher notification. Deluxe and Ultimate Collection buyers get a discount on the upgrade through the same window. Physical cartridge buyers are not eligible for the free digital upgrade; the Upgrade Pack needs to be purchased separately at full price.

Vibrant Visuals and what it actually changes

Vibrant Visuals is Mojang’s biggest official visual overhaul of Minecraft: a new modern graphics pipeline with enhanced lighting, shadow effects, water reflections, and shaded foliage. Sunrises render with more vivid colors, water reflects the sky and nearby blocks, and forests pick up depth from shaded leaf canopies. The Nintendo page flags that Vibrant Visuals is not available in split-screen or in certain Marketplace worlds and content, so couch co-op runs at the older look.

The Switch 2 edition is the first native Switch 2 version of Minecraft that runs Vibrant Visuals on the TV mode and tabletop mode at the higher resolution, with handheld mode using the same effect at the smaller screen size. The included Super Mario Mash-Up Pack also has Vibrant Visuals enabled, with 15 tracks and 40 player skins inspired by the Mario series.

Where this lands in the late-October Switch 2 lineup

The Minecraft Switch 2 launch lands the week after the October 22 wave: Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, Cult of the Lamb Switch 2, and Final Fantasy Resonance all release the same day; the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 full game unlocks worldwide on October 23 (our MW4 release time guide has the per-region times). The 27th is a Switch 2-only release, so Switch 2 owners who skipped the previous weekend’s Call of Duty launch have one of the most-searched games of the last decade dropping for them on a Tuesday.

This is the closest thing to a non-event that’s actually a big event. The Switch version has been on the eShop for eight years, so most players treat it as “the game I already have.” The upgrade story is what people search for: free if you own Switch 1 digital, $29.99 if you don’t, and the bundled Mario Mash-Up Pack is a real sweetener that wasn’t on the original Switch SKU. Vibrant Visuals running natively on Switch 2 hardware is the only new thing to actually look at; everything else is parity with the Xbox Series S version of the Bedrock codebase.
