GTA 6 Pre-Launch Checklist: What to Set Up Before November 19

Quick answer:
– Pre-order Standard ($79.99) on the store you’ll actually play on. Both editions include the Vintage Vice City Pack; digital pre-orders also throw in a free first month of GTA+. The platform you pre-order on is the platform you’ll play on (no cross-buy between PS5 and Xbox).
– Set aside at least 150 GB of SSD space. Rockstar hasn’t published the official installation size yet, and the rumored 677 GB figure is a hoax. Modern Rockstar games run large; the safe budget is in the 100–200 GB range on a fast drive.
– Physical Standard boxes hit stores November 12. They’re download-code-in-a-box, identical to digital Standard. Pick this up if you want a physical copy on your shelf.
Terms used here: GTA+ is Rockstar’s $9.99/month subscription for GTA Online bonuses (Shark Cards, member-only discounts, monthly drops); it’s been live since March 2022 and isn’t GTA 6-specific. The Vintage Vice City Pack is the free pre-order bonus on every Standard and Ultimate pre-order: a 1955 Vapid Stanier muscle car styled like Tommy Vercetti’s Infernus from the original 2002 Vice City, plus Tommy Vercetti-inspired weapon skins. Ultimate Edition is the $99.99 tier with bonus content; Standard is $79.99.

  • Rockstar hasn’t announced the unlock hour or time-zone model. Reviews are reportedly going live before launch (Insider Gaming), and the GTA 6 launch trailer dropped October 15, 35 days before launch. Our release date page tracks both.

What to do today, in order

Step Action When
1 Decide PS5 or Xbox. There is no cross-buy; pre-order on the platform you’ll play on. Now
2 Pre-order Standard ($79.99) or Ultimate ($99.99) through PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store to claim the Vintage Vice City Pack and a free first month of GTA+. By November 12
3 If you want a physical copy, pre-order the Standard physical SKU from your preferred retailer. Boxes go on sale November 12. By November 12
4 Free up at least 150 GB of SSD space on your console or PC. One week before launch
5 Update your console firmware and pre-load the game when Rockstar enables it. About 48 hours before launch
6 Decide on your GTA+ subscription path (free first month, then $9.99/month or wait and see). November 19
7 Decide if you want to upgrade Standard to Ultimate after launch ($20 difference, same as pre-ordering Ultimate up front). After beating the campaign

Source for each row: Rockstar’s GTA VI page for the November 19 release date and the dual-platform launch; our Pre-Order Guide for the $79.99 vs $99.99 split, the Vintage Vice City Pack contents, the free month of GTA+, and the Standard-to-Ultimate upgrade confirmation; Man of Many (Tier 2) for the November 12 physical launch; the GTA 6 launch trailer (Rockstar, October 15, 2026) for the 35-days-out cadence.

The seven decisions, in plain English

1. Pick your platform. GTA 6 launches only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no cross-buy, no cross-progression between the two consoles, and no PC or Switch 2 version announced. The platform you pre-order on is the one you’ll play on for the campaign. Pick the one your friend group is on (GTA Online matters more than the single-player for many players) and the one your library is built around.

2. Pick Standard or Ultimate. Standard ($79.99) is the base game. Ultimate ($99.99) layers extra vehicles, weapons, outfits, in-game businesses, and two exclusive side missions on day one. Both editions include the Vintage Vice City Pack pre-order bonus and (with digital pre-orders) a free first month of GTA+. The exact itemized list for Ultimate’s bonus content isn’t published yet. Rockstar has promised to publish it closer to launch. See our Editions Compared guide for the full math.

3. Pre-order through the platform store. Pre-ordering through PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store (digital) is what triggers the free first month of GTA+. Physical Standard pre-orders from retailers don’t include the GTA+ month. The free month stacks onto whatever GTA+ plan you have; if you’re already a member, it extends your existing membership rather than starting a new one.

4. Set aside SSD space. The widely shared “677 GB” install size is a hoax, per the launch-prep page’s fact-check. Modern Rockstar games run large: Red Dead Redemption 2 launched at 150 GB, GTA 5 has grown past 100 GB with updates. The safe budget for GTA 6 is at least 150 GB of free space on a fast SSD. Your PS5 or Xbox Series X|S internal SSD is the right place; if you’re on PC, install on your NVMe drive.

5. Pre-load when Rockstar enables it. Rockstar hasn’t published a pre-load date yet. The pattern from prior Rockstar launches is a 24–48-hour pre-load window, which our release date page tracks. Don’t try to install the morning of launch. The unlock hour matters; if Rockstar goes with midnight ET across the US (the Call of Duty pattern), pre-load the night before so you’re ready at 12:00 AM ET on November 19. If Rockstar goes with a single worldwide moment (the GTA 5 pattern), the countdown is the same for everyone. Either way, pre-load removes a major launch-day frustration.

6. GTA+ subscription timing. GTA+ is Rockstar’s $9.99/month subscription for GTA Online bonuses, Shark Cards, and member-only discounts. The free first month with every digital pre-order is the cheapest way to try it. After the first month, decide if the monthly drops and bonuses are worth $9.99/month. GTA+ has been live since March 2022, so this isn’t a GTA 6-specific subscription; the GTA 6 pre-order bonus is just a free month of it.

7. Decide on the Standard-to-Ultimate upgrade after the campaign. If you pre-order Standard to lock in the November 19 download at the lowest price, you can still upgrade to Ultimate after launch for the $20 difference. The upgrade is a separate purchase in-game or in the platform store. There’s no penalty for waiting. If you’re tempted by the bonus content but don’t want to gamble $20 before launch, the upgrade path means you can play the campaign first and decide later.

What Rockstar still hasn’t announced (as of October 18, 2026)

  • The official unlock hour or time-zone model. Two patterns are plausible: midnight ET across the US (the recent Call of Duty / Modern Warfare 4 pattern, on November 19) or a single worldwide moment (the GTA 5 launch pattern, which lands on the evening of November 18 in the Americas). Our release date page tracks both.
  • The official installation size. The widely shared 677 GB figure is not from Rockstar. Budget 150 GB and you’ll be fine.
  • A PC or Switch 2 release date. Take-Two hasn’t confirmed either. GTA 5 reached PC about 19 months after the console launch in April 2015, so the PC wait could be similar. The Bloomberg Q1 2027 report is insider-sourced, not Rockstar-confirmed.
  • Review embargo time. Insider Gaming reported on October 13 that the embargo lifts before launch. Rockstar hasn’t publicly confirmed. Per the Release Calendar, the embargo is the next milestone if it follows the standard Rockstar cadence.
  • The itemized list of Ultimate bonus content. Rockstar has named the categories (vehicles, weapons, outfits, businesses, two side missions) but not the specific items. Promised closer to launch.

We pulled the November 19 release date and PS5 + Xbox Series X|S platforms from Rockstar’s official GTA VI page. The $79.99 Standard and $99.99 Ultimate prices and the Vintage Vice City Pack contents come from the GTA 6 Pre-Order Guide, originally reported by TechRadar and Windows Central in early October. The free first month of GTA+ is from the same Pre-Order Guide and the Take-Two Q4 FY2026 earnings press release listing GTA+ as a launch-window subscription play. The 677 GB installation size flagged as a hoax is from Man of Many’s October 2026 reporting, which we’ve also covered on the launch-prep page.

For example, comparing the seven steps to last year’s GTA 5 re-release on PS5/Xbox Series X|S: that 2022 re-release went live at midnight local time on console (so the US got it midnight ET, the UK midnight GMT, and so on), with a 48-hour pre-load window. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed that GTA 6 will follow the same pattern, but it’s the most recent Rockstar launch with a public timeline. The seven-step checklist here weighs the seven confirmed decisions a player has to make before launch against the still-unannounced variables (unlock hour, installation size, PC and Switch 2 release dates, itemized Ultimate content). The plan below is conservative: pre-order Standard on your platform of choice to lock in the November 19 download and the free GTA+ month, hold the upgrade option open, and clear at least 150 GB of SSD space when Rockstar publishes a file size.

Concretely, the answer for the most common reader question (“should I pre-order Standard or wait?”): Standard at $79.99 with the Standard-to-Ultimate upgrade path beats Ultimate at $99.99 only if you think the $20 of bonus content (mostly vehicles and outfits, per our Pre-Order Guide) is worth gambling on before reviews land. Buy Standard to lock in the November 19 download and the free GTA+ month, then upgrade to Ultimate after launch only if you actually play all the bonus content within the first month. The upgrade is the same $20 whether you buy it on launch day or six months later, and there’s no penalty for waiting.

What to watch between now and launch

  • Late October / early November: Rockstar usually posts a launch-week update on Newswire 2–3 weeks before launch. That’s where the unlock hour, pre-load timing, and itemized Ultimate content will land first.
  • November 12: physical Standard boxes hit retailers. This is also the date pre-loads typically start.
  • November 13–18: pre-load window. The installation size will be in the platform store listing at this point.
  • November 19: global launch. Reviews reportedly go live before this point.
  • November 19 + 1 week: the first wave of GTA 6 multiplayer news, likely on Rockstar Newswire.
