Grand Theft Auto 6 reviews will go live before the game’s November 19 launch, according to a report from Insider Gaming — the UK-based outlet that has built a reputation on Rockstar-adjacent scoops. GameSpot, the long-running games outlet owned by Fandom, corroborated the news with its own piece.
Insider Gaming’s Grant Taylor-Hill says the outlet learned that Rockstar’s review embargo will lift ahead of the November 19 release. Insider Gaming also says it has learned the preliminary embargo date, but is withholding that detail because it could shift before launch.
The report answers a long-running question among GTA 6 watchers. Rockstar Games is the Edinburgh-headquartered studio owned by Take-Two Interactive. It shipped Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018 and Grand Theft Auto V in 2013. Both went out with review embargos that lifted a few days before launch. The conventional assumption this cycle was that GTA 6 would either repeat that pattern or skip pre-release press coverage entirely. Insider Gaming’s report confirms the former.
The shift matters for launch-day buyers. Pre-order customers who wanted to read the reviews before committing have been holding off for months. The pre-launch embargo also gives the press a real window with the game, which is the only way to write a review that goes beyond the marketing trailer. Rockstar has historically preferred longer-form reviews for its open-world releases, and a pre-launch embargo makes that possible.
The report doesn’t say how big the review estate will be or which outlets Rockstar is inviting into the early window. The size of the GTA 6 list, if any, will be a separate tell.
Recent Rockstar review embargo patterns
| Game | Launch year | Embargo timing before launch | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V | 2013 | A few days before | Broad early-window list across games and general interest press |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 2018 | A few days before | Broad early-window list |
| Grand Theft Auto 6 | 2026 | “Before November 19” per Insider Gaming | Exact embargo date not yet public |
Insider Gaming has built a track record on Rockstar-adjacent reporting. The outlet has broken pieces on GTA 6 ahead of Take-Two and Rockstar in the past 12 months, including the report about the Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 announcement that Insider Gaming itself references in the article. It’s also been wrong on some titles.
Our read: Rockstar keeping the standard pre-launch review window is the player-friendly outcome. It tells pre-order buyers they’ll have something to read before they click Buy, and it tells the press they’ll get a real window with the game. Whether the embargo lifts five days before launch or 36 hours before launch won’t change what most readers do with it. But it does end the “no reviews at all” speculation that was the loudest GTA 6 debate of the last month.
The pattern here matters for one practical reason: pre-order refund windows. Many retailers offer pre-order refunds up to a few days before launch. If GTA 6 reviews lift a full week early, you’ll have time to read them and still cancel your pre-order if the critic consensus is bad. If the embargo lifts 24 hours before launch, you’ll be reading reviews while the game is downloading. The Insider Gaming report doesn’t yet say which scenario we’re in.
Combined with the October 13 Bloomberg piece on GTA 6’s 8-year development cycle and 4,711-person team and our GTA 6 release date tracker, the picture that emerges is Rockstar running the standard playbook for a flagship open-world launch, with the usual pre-release press window intact.
