Grand Theft Auto 6 will be eligible for the 2026 Game Awards, ending weeks of speculation that the industry’s biggest release of the year might be shut out of this December’s show. The Game Awards’ updated FAQ confirms a November 20, 2026 cutoff for commercial availability — one day after GTA 6 launches on November 19.
The eligibility page on thegameawards.com spells it out: “Games must be made commercially available to customers on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT. In the Players’ Voice category, games must ship on or before November 30, 2026.” Rockstar Games’ open-world sequel clears the first hurdle by a single day. It also sneaks under the longer Players’ Voice window.
For most of the GTA 6 hype cycle, the math didn’t work. The Game Awards nominations last year were announced on November 17, and the awards show itself typically runs in mid-December. With GTA 6 set for November 19 and a notoriously large map to review, the worry was that Rockstar would either miss the cutoff or push into next year’s ceremony. Neither is happening. Polygon and Kotaku flagged the FAQ update on Wednesday.
Review timing is the other piece. Industry insider NateTheHate has reported that Rockstar plans to send review codes to outlets before the end of October, which would give the international jury of more than 100 outlets a real window with the game. Critics vote through a confidential ballot; the top five become nominees. Our earlier piece on the insider reports laid out how Rockstar handled review embargos on GTA V in 2013 and Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, both of which lifted a few days before launch.
The field is also weaker than usual. Resident Evil Requiem and Control Resonant have both earned strong critical buzz, but Kotaku notes there isn’t a single dominant frontrunner like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in 2025 or Baldur’s Gate 3 in 2023. Prediction markets are giving GTA 6 roughly a 68 percent chance of winning Game of the Year before any outlet has filed its review.
Our read: GTA 6 was going to dominate the conversation at the show either way, but eligibility matters for the record books. A Game of the Year win cements GTA 6’s commercial and critical standing in one stroke, and skipping the 2026 ceremony would have forced that conversation into 2027 alongside games nobody has played yet. As of right now, it’s eligible, the timing works, and the December 10 show will have the headline it has been building toward all year. The longer the eligibility cutoff sat in silence, the more this looked like a story about whether a Rockstar launch could break an awards show; instead, the show simply moved the goalposts by a day to keep GTA 6 in the running.
The 2026 Game Awards stream live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on December 10. GTA 6 launches November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the PC version reportedly slated for Q1 2027.
