Street Fighter opened to $31 million at the US box office this weekend, according to Deadline, about half of the Resident Evil movie’s $60M opening and roughly 19% below this year’s Mortal Kombat 2 debut of $38.5M. The Paramount/Legendary/Capcom adaptation earned a B- CinemaScore and a 65% definite recommend on Screen Engine/Rentrak’s PostTrak, both below Mortal Kombat 2’s B and below the 2021 Mortal Kombat’s B+.
The film’s older-male skew may explain the gap to Resident Evil. Deadline reports that 45% of Street Fighter’s audience is over 35, with parents and kids under 12 making up only 11% of ticket buyers. By comparison, Sony/Screen Gems’ Resident Evil leaned on a completely original story and pulled a more family-friendly crowd. The Polygon comparison is unflattering for Street Fighter on every metric, including per-theater averages and weekend multipliers.

What it means for the games
The Street Fighter 6 game itself has had a steady run in 2026. Capcom added the new Year 4 character Arjun and C. Viper’s Outfit 4 last week, and the franchise has its largest player base since SF6 launched in 2023. There’s no announced new game release timed to the film, but Capcom’s broader push to keep SF6’s roster and esports calendar alive means a $31M opening isn’t likely to spur a sequel push the way Mortal Kombat 2’s bigger debut might have. For fans watching the bigger picture, the lesson Polygon’s piece draws is that adaptations of well-known characters and lore (Street Fighter’s approach) are now opening lower than adaptations that strip the IP back to its themes (Resident Evil’s), even when the source IP is bigger.
Three of 2025’s highest-profile theatrical games adaptations now have US opening weekends on the books: Mortal Kombat (2021) and Mortal Kombat 2 (May 2026) at $38.5M, Resident Evil at $60M, and Street Fighter at $31M. The data so far says a recognizable roster of named characters helps at the gate but doesn’t carry a film past the opening weekend the way an original story with the franchise’s themes can. With Halloween-Capcom tie-ins and Paramount’s Clayface still to come in late October, the rest of Street Fighter’s theatrical run will tell us whether the B- CinemaScore translates into a quick drop or a long tail.
