Release date and platforms
Rockstar has held that date since the November 2025 delay from the original May 26, 2026 window. The studio’s public reasoning was that the extra time would let it “finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve,” per Rockstar’s own statement. GTA 6 will squeak into The Game Awards’ 2026 eligibility window: games must ship on or before Friday, November 20 at 9 p.m. PT, per The Game Awards FAQ as cited by IGN. That makes the campaign the first mainline GTA since GTA V in 2013. A 13-year gap on the series’ biggest stage.
Physical copies ship a week early. Boxes go on sale November 12, and per our GTA 6 Pre-Order Guide and GTA 6 Launch Prep, the only physical SKU is the Standard Edition download-code-in-a-box. There is no Collector’s Edition and no disc. The reviews embargo is the next milestone: reviews are reportedly going live before November 19, per Insider Gaming via GameSpot, though Rockstar has not publicly confirmed the date.
Editions and price
There are two editions. Every pre-order, Standard or Ultimate, unlocks the Vintage Vice City Pack: a 1955 Vapid Stanier re-skinned to evoke Tommy Vercetti’s Infernus from the 2002 Vice City, plus Tommy Vercetti-inspired weapon skins. Digital pre-orders on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store also include a free first month of GTA+, Rockstar’s subscription that bundles monthly GTA Online bonuses and member-only discounts. GTA+ has been live since March 2022 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
The $99.99 Ultimate Edition layers on top of Standard: extra vehicles, weapons, outfits, in-game businesses, and two exclusive side missions. Per our Pre-Order Guide, Rockstar has confirmed a Standard-to-Ultimate upgrade path after launch for the $20 difference, so players can lock in the November 19 download at $79.99 and decide on extras later.
There is no Game Pass or PS Plus day-one path. Take-Two does not put its first-party launches on subscription services on day one. Watch for a Holiday 2027 Game Pass window per the Xbox Wire pre-order benefits coverage, but budget for the full $79.99 on day one if you want it.
Story and setting
The story is set in Leonida, the fictional Florida state that includes Vice City (Rockstar’s stand-in for Miami, the setting of 2002’s Vice City). Jason and Lucia are a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style couple forced together when an easy score goes wrong. Per the official site, they find themselves “on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida.” Lucia is the first playable female protagonist in a mainline GTA. The October 15 launch trailer revealed that Jason has been discharged from the Army early for an unspecified reason and that Lucia’s ankle monitor is still active when the story opens, per Polygon.
Gameplay shown so far
IGN saw a 30-minute demo at Rockstar North’s Edinburgh HQ, played by co-studio head Rob Nelson, and broke the result into a Big Preview plus four explainers. Five systems matter:
Six-star wanted system with new heat icons. GTA 6 returns the series to six stars for the first time since 2009’s Chinatown Wars. New HUD icons underneath the stars tell you what police know: silhouette (physical description), clothes hanger (what you’re wearing), camera (CCTV footage of you). The same couples who heat can also cool by splitting up, swapping vehicles, or popping into a clothing store. Rob Nelson told IGN: “The Wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law.” Wanted stars are also regional, lifted directly from Red Dead Redemption 2’s bounty system.
Tiered car theft and a WAINK scanner. You can no longer press triangle to hotwire anything. Cheap, parked cars can be slim-jimmed on the fly, but high-end vehicles need a digital key-cloning tool that unlocks later. A WAINK scanner reveals a vehicle’s security tier and value. Some cars have GPS trackers that alert police if you drive below a certain speed, and any car worth selling has to be stripped of the tracker before reaching a fence. Both Jason and Lucia can own multiple personal vehicles, stored in garages.
NPCs that act back. Building on the L2 trigger system introduced in Red Dead Redemption 2, holding L2 with your gun holstered lets you talk to or taunt NPCs rather than immediately aiming. NPCs will notice you eavesdropping if you stand too close, follow people too long, or escalate, and the world’s “crazy people” can pull guns on you. Nelson: “I think in previous GTA games you were a bit all-powerful. You were the only one with an invisible arsenal hidden away. This world in GTA 6 is not like that.” The interaction system required a dedicated LA-based writing, directing and producing team.
Criminal Profile in place of Honor. A spiritual successor to RDR2’s Honor system. Your profile shifts based on whether you consistently go beyond what’s necessary in missions, not on whether you commit crimes per se. Rockstar said “there is no right or wrong way to play this.”
Optional romance. You can hold hands, go shopping, play pool, mini golf or kayak, or rob a bank together. Spending time together improves the relationship; ignoring texts may dent it. Lucia has kickboxer training; Jason is the ex-Army one. Rob Nelson told IGN’s romance explainer: “You will always have the benefit of working together and having each other’s back, whether they’re romantically close or not.”
The 8-year build
Per Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier feature (covered in our Bloomberg/GTA 6 story), GTA 6 co-heads Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut told Schreier the team has grown from 2,441 employees when Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped in 2018 to 4,711 across 12 offices in 2026. Of that headcount, 4,020 sit in development and QA, with 690 in publishing. Hooker said the engine, tools and team built during the cycle will let the next game ship faster; Garbut said Rockstar is “not going to rip it apart.”
The cadence shift is the meaningful one. GTA III through GTA IV shipped across a seven-year window on a much smaller staff. The GTA V (2013) to GTA VI (2026) gap is 13 years. The promise of a shorter cycle next time is partly the math working out: a second title on the same engine reuses the cost.
| GTA release | Year | Years since prior mainline |
|---|---|---|
| GTA III | 2001 | debut |
| GTA Vice City | 2002 | 1 |
| GTA San Andreas | 2004 | 2 |
| GTA IV | 2008 | 4 |
| GTA V | 2013 | 5 |
| GTA VI | 2026 | 13 |
What we still don’t know
- PC version. GamesBeat reported on four anonymous sources that GTA 6 hits PC in Q1 2027. Rockstar and Take-Two haven’t commented. The PC launch may tie into the multiplayer mode.
- Switch 2. Nintendo of America president Devon Pritchard told Variety in October to “ask Rockstar,” per IGN. No plans announced.
- The multiplayer mode. Rockstar hasn’t named it. Fans call it “GTA Online 2.” Twitch boss Dan Clancy said he expects it to launch next year. Possibly the same window as the PC version.
- Console performance. Resolution and frame-rate haven’t been confirmed for the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S versions.
Our read: The launch trailer on October 15 was the first frame with a concrete new plot detail since the December 2023 reveal. Lucia’s ankle monitor still active. That matters. Rockstar is protecting a twist for launch day, and the runway to November 19 is short by Rockstar standards. GTA V’s launch trailer landed on September 4, 2013, about 50 days before its September 17 release, per the Bloomberg piece. Dropping the launch trailer at 35 days out means the review embargo is the next milestone, not another trailer. For players, the safe plan is the Standard Edition at $79.99 with the upgrade path held open for the $20 Ultimate add-on, since our GTA 6 Pre-Order Guide lays out the upgrade. The 13-year wait since GTA V, the 8-year build, and the 4,711-person headcount explain why the price sits at $79.99 base for the first time in the series. Rockstar priced it where the budget needed it to be, not where the franchise’s fans expected. The bigger open question is whether the multiplayer mode ships in 2027 on PC at the same time. If so, GTA 6 becomes a multi-year platform rather than a one-off launch. We counted five major GTA 6 stories in our archive covering the 8-year development, the November 19 launch trailer, the Game Awards cutoff, the pre-order bonuses, and the Bloomberg deep dive. None of those answer whether the multiplayer launch slips into 2028, and that’s the one to watch between now and launch day.
Our GTA 6 hub collects every Pixel Herald story on Rockstar’s next game, including the Bloomberg deep dive, the Pre-Order Guide and the Release Calendar entry for November 19.
