Elden Ring has sold an estimated 36.4 million copies and made about $2 billion, according to a new estimate from the games market research firm Alinea Analytics. The Japanese outlet Automaton reported the figures on October 24, and we could not find an English outlet that has covered them yet. These are Alinea’s own estimates rather than figures FromSoftware or Bandai Namco have published, so the headline number is an informed guess, not a confirmed milestone.

What the estimate says about the people who play: 9.8 million of them have put 100 hours or more into Elden Ring, roughly 27% of the estimated sales, and about 3.5 million have unlocked every achievement and trophy. Alinea also puts 2026 sales at around 2 million copies for about $110 million, and estimates that 1.5 million people were still playing on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in September 2026. Of that console crowd, 4% also played Dark Souls III that month, 4% played Bloodborne and 3% played Sekiro.

Steam’s own achievement counters back the shape of the estimate, and we pulled them ourselves on October 24. Steam’s public data shows 74.9% of players have reached Roundtable Hold and 70.9% have beaten Margit, the Fell Omen. Further in, 36.4% have defeated Malenia, 30.2% have beaten Dragonlord Placidusax and 23.9% have reached the Elden Lord ending. Steam’s live player API returned 27,143 people in the game when we checked, a snapshot of this morning rather than the years-long total the estimate describes. Our Elden Ring page has the Steam listing, where Steam shows those achievement percentages.

The Japan-specific piece of this story is the film. Automaton reports that A24’s adaptation of Elden Ring, written and directed by Alex Garland, is scheduled for a global theatrical release on March 3, 2028, and that Japan has no date yet. The game itself is still being serviced, as our report on its October 20 server maintenance showed.

The distance between the 74.9% who reach Roundtable Hold and the 23.9% who reach the Elden Lord ending is the part of this story that does not depend on anybody’s estimate, and Steam publishes those numbers for free. If Alinea’s 9.8 million hundred-hour players are right, Elden Ring’s audience today is a committed core rather than a crowd of lapsed owners, which is why the live count still sits in the tens of thousands four and a half years after launch. Japan is the piece still waiting on a date, for the film.
