Quick answer: World of Warcraft: Forever drops the realm-selection screen for four rulesets, and each one is a separate community you can’t group across.
- You pick a ruleset, not a realm. Blizzard lists Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Hardcore, and says a Roleplay-PvP ruleset also arrives on launch day.
- Cross-ruleset grouping is not supported. If your friends pick different rulesets, you cannot group, run dungeons or raid together.
- Horde and Alliance still cannot group, on any ruleset.
- You cannot hop rulesets with the same character. Playing another style means a new character in that ruleset.
- Name reservations run October 27 to November 3 and need a World of Warcraft: Forever Digital Upgrade or Collector’s Edition purchase.
Blizzard rewrote how you enter World of Warcraft with World of Warcraft: Forever, the reimagined original Azeroth that launches on November 4, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. Pacific. Instead of picking a realm off a list of dozens, you choose a ruleset, and that choice decides who you can play with for the life of the character. Think of a ruleset as the community the game drops you into instead of a realm: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying or Hardcore.
The four rulesets, and what each one is for
| Ruleset | What Blizzard says it is | When it arrives | Faction rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | The baseline World of Warcraft: exploration, questing, cooperation and PvP when you choose to engage in it | Launch, November 4 | You can make both Horde and Alliance characters |
| PvP | Open-world conflict and contested territory, with danger wherever you travel | Launch | One faction only per account, and the choice sticks |
| Roleplaying | Deeper roleplay, with like-minded adventurers who want to lean into the fantasy | Launch | Both factions |
| Hardcore | The ultimate challenge, where every decision matters and death carries lasting consequences | After launch | Both factions |
Blizzard’s October 22 update to the ruleset post also added a Roleplay-PvP ruleset that arrives on launch day, and said it will be available during Early Name Reservations from October 27.
Each ruleset is more than a filter on the character list. Blizzard describes them as broad ecosystems, closer to a shared world than to a single server, so group finder, dungeons, raids and battlegrounds all draw from the pool of players who chose the same ruleset.
Which ruleset should you pick?
Because grouping never crosses a ruleset, the honest answer is “the one your group is already in”.
| If you want to… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Quest, level and dungeon with a fixed group | The ruleset your group is choosing | Cross-ruleset grouping does not exist, so this decides whether you can queue together |
| Fight in the open world and war towns | PvP | Contested territory is the point, but you pick one faction for good |
| Play the fantasy seriously with roleplayers | Roleplaying | Built for like-minded adventurers, with Roleplay-PvP arriving at launch as well |
| The toughest ruleset | Hardcore | Death carries lasting consequences, and a dead character can transfer out to another ruleset |
Can you group with players in a different ruleset?
No, and this is the detail worth planning around. Blizzard is explicit: cross-ruleset grouping is not supported, so characters in different spaces cannot group for dungeons or raids.
Battlegrounds are the exception. They may include players from other rulesets, with one carve-out: Hardcore stays separate. If you main a healer or tank and your group is spread across Normal and PvP, you are looking at two separate queues rather than one.
Factions are also still separate. Horde and Alliance players cannot group together, which Blizzard says preserves the faction boundaries that define the World of Warcraft experience.
Can you switch rulesets later?
Not with the same character. Blizzard built each ruleset for its own community and playstyle, so movement between them is intentionally limited: to play under a different ruleset you create a new character there.
Two exceptions are worth knowing:
- A dead Hardcore character can move. When Hardcore launches, a character that dies can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP.
- Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide. Progress, collections and rewards earned in Hardcore can become available elsewhere, but progress from other rulesets does not flow back into Hardcore.
One more account-wide setting to set early: your preferred online language. You pick it in the Game Menu under Options, then Languages and Social, in the System heading. It applies to every character and has a 24-hour cooldown before you can change it again.
The PvP faction lock is the decision you cannot walk back
Hardcore has an escape valve, because a dead character transfers out. The PvP ruleset does not. On PvP, you can create characters for one faction only: make an Alliance character and you cannot make a Horde character there, and the reverse holds as well.
Blizzard says it balances factions on the PvP ruleset with systems similar to the ones it introduced in Season of Discovery, where new character creation could be temporarily limited for one faction when balance support was needed. On Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore you can create characters for both factions.
So the practical order of decisions on November 4 is: ruleset first, faction second on PvP.
When can you reserve your character name?
Early Name Reservations run from October 27 through November 3, with regional start times published by Blizzard.
| Region | Reservations open |
|---|---|
| Europe | October 27 at 6:00 p.m. CET |
| North America | October 27 at 1:00 p.m. PDT |
| Korea | October 28 at 7:00 a.m. KST |
| Taiwan | October 28 at 7:00 a.m. CST |
You can reserve up to three characters in total across all rulesets, so two on PvP leaves you one more on Normal or Role-Play. Names are first come, first served, and Blizzard says it cannot guarantee the name you want.
The catch is the purchase. Early Name Reservation requires a World of Warcraft: Forever Digital Upgrade or Collector’s Edition on the account, and the names post also lists the Skyborne Heroic Pack, the Skyborne Epic Pack and the limited-time Warcraft Forever Collection as qualifying purchases.
The steps Blizzard lists are worth following exactly, because the ruleset choice happens after the download. Update your graphics drivers, install the Battle.net desktop app and select World of Warcraft. Then use the Game Version menu above the Play button to choose World of Warcraft: Forever and install it. Hit Play, pick your ruleset and create your reserved characters once the client is live.
What else is confirmed for launch day
Blizzard has published a full set of launch details, and they are unusually specific for a game six weeks away.
Nine new five-player dungeons run from level 13 to level 60, per the dungeon breakdown.
| Dungeon | Level | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Hall of Thanes | 13-18 | Dun Morogh |
| Ruins of Lordaeron | 15-20 | Tirisfal Glades |
| Excavation Site | 24-29 | The Wetlands |
| City of Dalaran | 28-33 | Alterac Mountains |
| The Drowned City | 35-40 | Off Stranglethorn Vale |
| Krol’dok Stronghold | 40-45 | The Riverglades |
| Alcaz Prison | 48-53 | Alcaz Island, Dustwallow Marsh |
| Blackmaw Hold | 55-60 | Azshara |
| Shaper’s Terrace | 58-60 | Un’Goro Crater |
Three raids unlock on December 9, all at level 60: Barrow Deeps for 10 players, Hyjal Summit for 20 and Onyxia’s Lair for 40. In Onyxia’s Lair, every raider needs the Drakefire Amulet from a faction-specific attunement questline that starts in the Burning Steppes.
Camping is a new system. A Basic Campfire, expanded from the Cooking profession, becomes a shared campsite that supports up to three crafted features contributed by nearby players. A blacksmith’s Sharpening Wheel raises Strength for an hour, a tailor’s Faction Banner raises Spirit, and a herbalist’s Incense Candle raises Intellect. Sit or craft at a campsite for at least a minute and you pick up other players’ buffs. You learn two primary professions and all three secondary ones, and the first campsite items arrive at profession skill 20.
Talent choices land early. In the Paladin deep dive, Blizzard says talents become available at level 10, with one-point gold medal talents at 11, 21 and 31 and a new 16-point gold medal, and Dual Specialization at level 40.
Access itself is simple: World of Warcraft: Forever is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time, and optional upgrade packs sit on the Battle.net Shop. A physical Collector’s Edition is available through the Blizzard Gear Store while supplies last, according to Blizzard’s launch announcement.
Counting Blizzard’s own launch posts, the confirmed list is short: four rulesets, nine dungeons, three raids and a 24-hour language cooldown. The ruleset you pick decides your dungeon and raid queue for the life of that character, because cross-ruleset grouping does not exist, so the group you already have matters more than the flavor of the ruleset. The most expensive mistake is not Hardcore, which lets a dead character transfer out, but the PvP faction lock, which cannot be undone on the account. Add a name reservation that needs a Digital Upgrade or Collector’s Edition purchase before launch, and the sensible order becomes simple. Talk to your group, pick the ruleset together, then decide whether the name you want is worth buying the upgrade this week.

FAQ
How much does World of Warcraft: Forever cost? You do not buy a separate box for it. Blizzard’s launch announcement says access comes with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time, with optional upgrade packs sold on the Battle.net Shop: the Skyborne Heroic Pack, the Skyborne Epic Pack and the limited-time Warcraft Forever Collection. A physical Collector’s Edition is sold through the Blizzard Gear Store while supplies last. We could not pull the pack prices out of the Battle.net Shop for this guide, so check the shop for the current numbers before you buy.
Is World of Warcraft: Forever coming to console? Not so far. Blizzard’s launch announcement covers a PC launch through the Battle.net client, and our pre-purchase guide notes that no console version has been announced.
When does the Hardcore ruleset open? Sometime after launch, Blizzard says. Hardcore runs as a fully enclosed ecosystem: its battlegrounds stay separate from the other rulesets, and progress earned there can move out to another ruleset but never back in.
