Quick answer: Phantom Blade Zero has four difficulty modes, and Wayfarer is the one to pick if you mainly want the story.

  1. Wayfarer: the story-focused option, with less punishing combat.
  2. Pathbreaker: the standard mode, according to Gamereactor’s report on the State of Play.
  3. Hellwalker: harder, with enemies that use more advanced and adaptive AI.
  4. Sixty-Six Days: a high-stakes mode tied to the 66 days Soul has to live.

The game launches October 29, 2026 on PS5 and PC (October 28 in the US and some other regions). S-GAME hasn’t said whether you can change modes mid-game, so read the last section before you commit.

What S-GAME and Sony have confirmed

Sony’s PlayStation Blog recap of the August 17 State of Play is the official source for the modes. It says the “range of difficulty options” lets newcomers and action veterans tailor the game. It names three of them. “If you’d simply like to enjoy the story, Wayfarer mode is for you,” the post says, while Hellwalker brings “more advanced and adaptive enemy intelligence,” and Sixty-Six Days “isn’t for the faint of heart.”

The blog doesn’t name the middle option or spell out what Sixty-Six Days changes. Gamereactor, which covered the presentation, filled in both: Pathbreaker is the normal mode, and Sixty-Six Days doesn’t make enemies tougher but gives you 66 days to live, with each death costing a day. We could not confirm that death-penalty detail from S-GAME or Sony, so treat it as that outlet’s description until the game is out.

The Steam page lists Adjustable Difficulty as a feature and the game as single-player. It also sets up why the last mode exists: S-GAME’s description says Soul is left with just sixty-six days to live after a wound to the heart.

The four modes side by side

Mode What it’s for Source
Wayfarer Enjoying the story with less punishing combat PlayStation Blog
Pathbreaker The standard, normal experience Gamereactor
Hellwalker Tougher fights against adaptive enemy AI PlayStation Blog
Sixty-Six Days Same enemies, but the 66-day clock is the pressure PlayStation Blog (named), Gamereactor (rules)

Which mode should you pick?

The answer depends on how you play action games, and the confirmed facts leave room for a clear call. If you are here for the story, start on Wayfarer. Sony’s own wording makes that its purpose, and nothing S-GAME has published says a lower mode locks you out of content.

If you like action games but don’t want to be stuck, Pathbreaker is the safe default. Every fight in a long game adds up, so pick a mode you can sustain over the whole run, not one that wins you bragging rights in the first hour. Hellwalker is for a second run or for players who want enemies that adapt, and Sixty-Six Days looks like a finishing challenge, not a first-playthrough choice.

Build choice is the other lever when a fight stalls you. The same Sony recap says you will unlock more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges, and that you can reforge a weapon you’ve upgraded, get the materials back and spend them on another. Changing weapons before changing modes costs you less than it sounds.

A good order, if the game lets you switch, is Pathbreaker first, then Hellwalker for any boss that stalls you. Our beginner’s guide covers the weapons and what to do in the first hours.

What S-GAME hasn’t said yet

Three details matter and none is official yet:

  • Switching modes: whether you can change difficulty mid-playthrough.
  • Unlocking Sixty-Six Days: whether it is available from the start or opens after a first clear.
  • Rewards: whether any mode changes drops, endings or Steam achievements.

We will update this page with S-GAME’s answers once the game is out. Until then, nothing official says a lower mode locks you out of content.
