Quick answer: only the campaign is a candidate for offline play. Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 FAQ says the game uses texture streaming across all modes, so you need a continuous internet connection for Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and for DMZ.
- Multiplayer and DMZ: connection required, no offline option.
- Private Matches: still online-only, so you can’t practice offline.
- Split-screen: two players on one screen in multiplayer, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Campaign: the FAQ doesn’t list it among the modes that need a connection.
Activision’s page doesn’t say in so many words that the campaign runs offline. It just leaves the campaign off the list, and Insider Gaming first reported in May that Infinity Ward’s campaign wouldn’t force a connection, unlike Black Ops 7. Treat it as likely, not guaranteed, until Activision confirms it or you’ve checked in-game.
Mode by mode: what needs a connection
Texture streaming means the game pulls high-resolution textures from Activision’s servers while you play instead of storing them all on your drive. Activision gives two reasons for it: the best visuals, and a smaller install.
| Mode | Internet needed? | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Multiplayer | Yes, continuous | Activision FAQ |
| Private Matches | Yes, continuous | Activision FAQ names them |
| DMZ | Yes, continuous | Activision FAQ |
| Campaign | Not listed | FAQ is silent; press reports say offline |
The campaign has been playable since Early Access opened on October 16 for digital pre-orders, and it opens to everyone at launch on October 23. Our release time guide has the unlock hour for your time zone.
Split-screen: which platforms have it
Activision’s FAQ answers the split-screen question directly: split-screen multiplayer, with two players sharing a screen, is available on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. The FAQ doesn’t mention PC or Switch 2 for split-screen, and the Steam page lists Single-player, Multi-player, Co-op and Online Co-op but no shared or split-screen tag. So if you play on PC, plan on one screen per player.
The FAQ says “multiplayer” and nothing more. It doesn’t say whether DMZ or private matches work in split-screen, so don’t promise a couch-co-op DMZ run to a friend before checking in-game. Our DMZ beginner’s guide explains how that mode works.
What else you need to play online
The connection isn’t the only requirement. Activision’s pages list several account and platform rules that catch players out on day one:
- Console subscription. A PlayStation Plus, Game Pass Essential or Nintendo Switch Online subscription is required for social features and online modes. Our Game Pass and PS Plus guide covers what each tier gets you.
- Phone number. A mobile phone number linked to your Activision account may be required on console. On Steam, the store page says a mobile number must be linked to your Steam account to play.
- PC security. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required on PC, per both the Steam page and Activision. See Activision’s TPM page for how to turn them on.
- PC network spec. The Steam page lists a broadband internet connection in both the minimum and recommended specs, alongside 115 GB of SSD space. Our PC system requirements guide has the full list.
On Switch 2, the same subscription rule applies through Nintendo Switch Online; our Switch 2 guide covers price and performance.
We compared Activision’s FAQ with the Steam listing, and the practical takeaway is that MW4 is an online game in everything except possibly the campaign. If you commute, fly or have a flaky connection, the campaign is the only mode worth planning around, and you should download it fully before you leave. Texture streaming also means a slow connection can hurt how the game looks, not just whether it connects.
Before launch day
Check your subscription is active, link your phone number now if you haven’t, and enable TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot on PC before launch day. The rest of the setup, from settings to modes, is in our launch guide on mistakes to avoid, our multiplayer beginner’s guide and the MW4 hub. Crossplay rules are in our crossplay explainer.
