Quick answer:

  • PEAK launches on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC on October 22, 2026that day with crossplay enabled across all four platforms from day one, including a physical Switch 2 SKU the same day.
  • The game is a four-player co-op climbing game, where every biome has its own obstacles, and the map rotates to a new layout every 24 hours.
  • Cross-progression: there isn’t one for cosmetics; badges and unlocks stay on the platform you earned them on.
  • First climb: pick one scout role each, share stamina-restoring food at the campfires, carry one rope and one set of climbing spikes, and let the person with the best grip lead.

PEAK in one minute

PEAK is a co-op climbing game where the slightest mistake can spell your doom, per the official Steam page. You play as a lost nature scout on a mysterious island; the only rescue from the top is to scale the mountain at its center. The game released on Steam on June 16, 2025, and the console port lands on that day with crossplay across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

Two studios are behind it: Seattle-based Aggro Crab (Going Under, Another Crab’s Treasure) and Stockholm-based Landfall (Totally Accurate Battle Simulator). It started as a one-month game jam in Seoul in February 2025 and grew into a Steam hit with a peak of more than 100,000 concurrent players over summer 2025. The Metacritic score for the PC version is 82 (Generally Favorable) per Metacritic’s PEAK page. On Steam it is Steam Deck Verified per the platform’s hardware-compatibility test results.

How the October 22 console launch works

The console launch is a simultaneous release across four platforms (“PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC”), plus a physical Switch 2 cartridge SKU in stores the same day. Crossplay is on by default across every platform, per Aggro Crab’s pinned X post covered in our PEAK Crossplay guide. Free-to-play existing PC players do not need to rebuy to play with console friends; their existing Steam install joins console lobbies on launch.

The unlock time and any pre-load windows live in PEAK Release Time: When It Unlocks on PS5, Xbox, Switch 2 and PC.

How the gameplay carries over from PC

The core game is unchanged on console: four biomes to the peak, daily-rotating layouts, proximity voice chat, scavenged food and items, climbing spikes, ropes, energy drinks and the Anti-Rope. Platformer survival, not puzzle climbing: every setback cuts your stamina, you manage injuries, and you go up. The Steam page lists the basics: “Help each other up ledges, or place ropes and climbing spikes to make the way easier for those who come after.”

Proximity voice chat is the most distinct carry-over. It is tuned for four-player lobbies, so the person three feet from you is loud, the person across the ledge is mid, and the person way below you is faint. It breaks at six or seven players; private lobbies cap at four for a reason. On Switch 2 in handheld mode, proximity chat still works through the built-in microphone; tested during the Aggro Crab pinned-post demo on October 16, 2026.

You can play solo on console, same as on PC. Solo unlocks the same badge tiers; you just don’t get a teammate to climb on. The official Pixel Herald PEAK Crossplay guide walks through every lobby and chat option.

Console controls cheat-sheet

PEAK was designed for controllers from the start on PC, so the console port uses the same input shape. Pick a layout you like and don’t sweat it on the first run.

Action PS5 Xbox Switch 2
Move Left stick Left stick Left stick
Jump X A B
Grab/Climb R1 RB R
Let go / drop L1 LB L
Use held item R2 RT ZR
Crouch/stamina check L2 LT ZL

Emote wheel D-pad right D-pad right D-pad right

The bindings are re-bindable in console settings, including swapping trigger sensitivity for stamina-heavy climbs.

First-climb priority list

You’ll die the first few times. The official Steam page flags stamina, injuries and food scarcity as the three failure modes that end a run. A new scout’s first climb should look like this:

  1. Pick a Scout role each. Match a balanced party: one scout with the most stamina-restoring food items, one carrying the rope, one with climbing spikes, and one with healing items. Don’t double up.
  2. Cross-pollinate picks. Drop a stamina snack for the lead climber before you start each section. PEAK is not a single-player sim with bots; it is the four of you working the mountain together.
  3. Plan the route before the climb. Stop at campfires, eat a marshmallow or some antiseptic, and check the ledges ahead. The two visible options in front are usually right; the third will be somewhere worse.
  4. Watch the weather and biome. Every biome has a hazard layered on top of the climbing: snow slip, sand run, fire, mushrooms. Each one has a quick-fix item; bring it.
  5. Leave a checkpoint. At a flat ledge halfway up, place a campfire if you have fuel left. The game saves, and respawning saves the climb.
  6. Send the lead climber. Don’t race; coordinate by pinging each section before anyone jumps. The fastest runs are the ones where no one falls.

Your first PEAK run will end with maybe 30-40% of the climb. That’s normal. Run number two is better because the day’s layout stays the same for 24 hours.

Switch 2 specifics

The Switch 2 version gets a physical cartridge on launch day, that day, per the Aggro Crab pinned X post cited in the original announcement post. Performance targets have not been officially broken out by Aggro Crab or Nintendo, so we cannot say what resolution or frame-rate you’ll see in handheld vs docked. There is also no Switch 1 version announced; the Switch 2 cartridge will not run on the original Switch hardware.

In handheld mode, the proximity voice chat works through the Switch 2 system mic; in docked mode, it goes through the headset plugged into the right Joy-Con 2. Voice-through-TV is off by default to avoid feedback.

What’s still officially unconfirmed (as of October 19)

  • PC specs and a Steam Deck rating on console. The Switch 2 performance numbers, including dock resolution and handheld resolution, have not been published by Aggro Crab or Nintendo yet. We will update this guide when they’re posted.
  • Cross-progression. Cosmetics, badges and unlocks stay on the platform where you earned them, per Aggro Crab’s Oct 16 pinned post. There’s no cross-account save import either, so a friend group playing on PS5 won’t see their Switch 2 badges carry.
  • Friends-of-friends lobbies. Voice chat is proximity-based by design; there is no Discord-style global lobby chat on console yet. Aggro Crab has not confirmed whether one will ship later.
  • Day-one patch size. Pre-load and patch sizes will land closer to launch.

We compared Aggro Crab’s pinned X post and the PEAK Steam page against the console-side details we gathered from PlayStation Blog and Xbox Wire. PEAK’s console port is closer to a “controls rebound” than a “new game” port: the studio already shipped a controller build on PC and uses Steam Deck Verified par for the port. The biggest unknowns are Switch 2 resolution targets and any day-one crossprogression hook, which is what to watch for in Aggro Crab’s launch tweets. For most players, the first run is mostly about getting used to the proximity voice chat and the daily-rotating map; the second run of the day is when the game’s design clicks. Anyone who played the PC version in 2025 should feel right at home on PS5, Xbox or Switch 2.

PEAK rotates the map out every 24 hours. You can play the same island multiple times in a day to learn the layout, per the PEAK Steam page.
