Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 12, 2026. Nintendo has already priced the cheap way in: the Upgrade Pack costs $9.99 for anyone who owns the Nintendo Switch game. The full edition’s own price is still missing, because Nintendo’s store listing still reads “Coming Soon” with no price attached. A free demo arrives first, on November 2.
Quick answer:
- Launch: November 12 on Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s store page gives the date and attaches no launch hour to it.
- If you own Pikmin 4: the Upgrade Pack is $9.99 and 1.2 GB, it pre-loads, and it needs the full Pikmin 4 game to work.
- If you are starting fresh: the price of the complete Switch 2 Edition has not been published by Nintendo yet.
- Try before you buy: a free demo arrives November 2, with the opening area Sun-Speckled Terrace and two Dandori Academy stages.
- What is new: Dandori Academy exams, Dandori Battles through GameShare and GameChat, voice commands for Oatchi, and higher-resolution visuals.
What the Switch 2 Edition actually is
Nintendo’s own support page on Switch 2 upgrade packs explains the model. A Switch 2 Edition is a bundle that contains the original Nintendo Switch game plus an upgrade pack built for the new hardware. Upgrade pack contents vary by game, and Nintendo says they can include visual improvements, new features or extra game modes. That content runs on Switch 2 only, and the Nintendo Switch version of the game keeps working on Nintendo Switch after you upgrade.
The store page for Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy puts it plainly: the edition “includes the Nintendo Switch game plus the upgrade pack, which adds more features and enhancements for play on Nintendo Switch 2.” Nintendo also says you can start playing the Nintendo Switch version today and be ready for launch by pre-ordering the upgrade pack.
What costs what
We analyzed Nintendo’s store listings for this game on November 1 and put the published prices, sizes and dates side by side.
| Product | Price (US eShop) | Download size | What it is | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pikmin 4 (Nintendo Switch) | $59.99 | 11.3 GB | The original game, released July 21, 2023 | Plays on Switch and Switch 2 |
| Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy | Not published yet | 12.8 GB on Switch 2 | The bundle: Switch game plus upgrade pack | New players buying from scratch |
| Upgrade Pack for Pikmin 4 | $9.99 | 1.2 GB | Adds the Switch 2 features to a copy you own | Existing owners on Switch |
The upgrade pack is the only one of the three with a published price today. Nintendo’s listing for it says it “lets you pre-load the game, so you’ll be able to play as soon as the game is released.”
What the upgrade pack adds
Dandori Academy is the new mode at the center of this edition: a series of exam stages where you send Pikmin out to collect treasure as fast as you can, and you are graded on how well you plan the route. Nintendo’s store page says the full run is 72 stages released over time, spread across difficulty levels, with in-game medals for your scores. Nintendo’s Treehouse playthrough covers three difficulty levels of Dandori Exams, and the hardest one features an Empress Bulblax.
The exams run on a schedule rather than a stopwatch. In the Pikmin Day Direct on October 31, Nintendo said exams are held every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you get one attempt, and you earn medals for how you do. For example, Nintendo’s own tip is to plan the route first: instead of sending several Pikmin to carry the treasure, you can use a single Purple Pikmin, and a shortcut can open up if you look ahead.
Three more additions come with the pack:
- Voice commands for Oatchi. The dog now listens through the Nintendo Switch 2 system microphone, so you can call him to work instead of steering him with the stick. Nintendo describes it as Oatchi listening for your commands as you play.
- Dandori Battles. You can race a friend on the same system, or share the game with someone who does not own it, locally or online through GameChat. Nintendo’s support page lists GameShare as online and local for this edition.
- Higher-resolution visuals. Improved detail in both TV mode and handheld mode, according to Nintendo’s own description of the upgrade.
There is also a link to the mobile side of the series. Nintendo said Pikmin Bloom gets a Secret Caves adventure this winter, and that players can earn special in-app cave maps by taking exams in the Switch 2 Edition.
Who should buy what
If you finished Pikmin 4 on Switch and liked it, the $9.99 Upgrade Pack is the obvious purchase. It is roughly a sixth of the price of the original game, it pre-loads, and it keeps your Switch copy playable on Switch. You are buying higher resolution, Oatchi’s new trick and the Dandori Academy exams, not a second campaign.
If you never played Pikmin 4, wait for Nintendo to publish the full edition’s price. Every other number in this guide is settled, and that one is not. Buying the $59.99 base game and then the $9.99 pack comes to $69.98, so the bundle is the cheaper route if Nintendo prices it under that.
If you are on Nintendo Switch 2 and want the new mode before anyone else, the free demo on November 2 gives you two Dandori Academy stages and the Sun-Speckled Terrace opening area. That is enough to learn the route planning the exams test.
Can you try it before November 12?
Yes, starting November 2. Nintendo announced the free demo in the Pikmin Day Direct, and it covers the opening area, Sun-Speckled Terrace, plus two Dandori Academy stages. Nintendo announced the demo for the Switch 2 Edition, so that is the version the demo runs.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?
For the single-player parts, no. Nintendo’s store page lists online features, such as GameChat and online play, as requiring a Nintendo Switch Online membership, plus a Nintendo Account and an internet connection. Nintendo’s upgrade-pack support page adds that members of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership can download certain upgrade packs at no additional cost. Nintendo’s Pikmin 4 pages do not say whether this pack is one of them.
What Nintendo has not said yet
- The price of the full Switch 2 Edition. The store listing is marked “Coming Soon” with no price, and the upgrade pack listing warns that information about the game, including ratings and download size, may not be finalized at pre-order.
- The launch hour. The store page lists November 12 and no time attached.
- Save data handling. Nintendo’s support page says the original Switch game keeps playing on Switch after an upgrade, and that Switch 2 content is Switch 2 only. It does not spell out how saves carry over for this game, so anyone upgrading on launch day should keep a copy of their old save until they have checked.
We track the launch on our Release Calendar and keep the Pikmin 4: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy game page updated as Nintendo publishes. The numbers published so far make the decision one-sided for existing owners. The Upgrade Pack at $9.99 is about a sixth of the original game’s $59.99, and it is the only figure in the official listing. The one open variable is the bundle price for new players, and until Nintendo prints it, any comparison of the two ways to buy the edition is a comparison with a missing number on one side.
We covered the Pikmin Day Direct itself, including the short film series Nintendo is releasing one episode at a time, in our story about Nintendo’s second Pikmin short and our Morning Save Point roundup.
