Modern Warfare 4’s single-player campaign is live for Digital Standard and Digital Vault pre-orders as of Friday, October 16, 2026. The campaign is 16 missions across Korea, Paris, New York and Mumbai, per IGN’s Simon Cardy review in progress, and takes roughly 7 hours on Regular difficulty. The big question players have right now is what they actually get out of it: what stays in single-player, what carries into the multiplayer and DMZ unlocks, and what’s hidden inside the missions.
The short version: finishing the campaign unlocks the standard campaign-only rewards (mission select, difficulty rewards, cosmetic calling cards from the harder runs), and your Operator XP, weapon XP and Battle Pass progress carry into multiplayer and DMZ. COD Points bought with real money stay locked to the platform store you bought them on. The Vault Edition’s Signature Weapons, Operator Packs and BlackCell are all multiplayer Season 1 content; they don’t drop during the campaign. The Stranded mission is the one place where the campaign gives you tangible loot: it borrows the DMZ extraction loop and has exotic weapons, keypad puzzles and three main objectives you can complete in any order.
What carries from MW4 campaign to multiplayer
Activision’s Call of Duty campaign Early Access post confirms Campaign Early Access for digital pre-orders, but the campaign-to-multiplayer carry rules live in Activision’s pre-order benefits and editions page and the Modern Warfare 4 release time guide.

| COD Points bought with real money | No | Locked to the platform store of purchase |
| COD Points earned through the Battle Pass | No | Locked to the platform where you earned the tier |
| Items bought with COD Points | Yes | Follow your Activision ID |
| Vault Edition Signature Weapons (5 weapons, Apex Attachments) | N/A | Unlock at launch on Oct 23 in multiplayer; campaign gives no early access to them |
| Vault Edition BlackCell (Season 1) | N/A | Activates with Season 1 Battle Pass on Nov 6 |
| Vault Edition Operator Packs (Hostile Alliance, Special Forces) | N/A | Day one in MW4 multiplayer; Warzone arrival is Season 1 |

The one thing that doesn’t carry is COD Points. Activision has always locked COD Points to the platform store where they were purchased, and that’s still the rule in MW4. If you bought 1,100 CP on PS5, those CP are PS5-only. Items bought with those CP are not bound — you can use them on any platform linked to the same Activision ID.
What you actually unlock by completing MW4 missions
Activision hasn’t published a per-mission reward list for MW4, and the campaign is the same across all three editions. What’s confirmed so far:
- Mission select for all 16 missions once you’ve launched the campaign at least once. The Campaign tile menu lets you replay any completed chapter, so you can go back for collectibles or try a harder difficulty without restarting the whole story.
- Calling cards and emblems for harder runs. Completing the campaign on Hardened or Veteran difficulty typically unlocks a calling card and emblem, per the long-running Call of Duty campaign tradition. Activision hasn’t published the exact unlockables for MW4; we’ll add them here once they appear in the post-campaign menu.
- Operator XP and weapon XP. Every kill, mission completion and challenge you clear during the campaign feeds XP into your multiplayer and DMZ Operators. The XP doesn’t accelerate as fast as multiplayer grinding, but it’s a meaningful head start on the operators and weapons you’ll use when multiplayer unlocks on October 23.
- Battle Pass tier progress. Battle Pass XP earned during campaign counts toward the free and paid Battle Pass tracks. Activision hasn’t published the exact conversion, but the pre-order benefits post treats campaign-earned XP the same as multiplayer-earned XP.
If you’re looking for a “Following Orders” or other single-mission reward, Activision hasn’t published a per-mission loot table for MW4. Community guides that list “Following Orders lockbox rewards” are working from players documenting what they find during playthroughs. Activision’s campaign rules don’t promise a named loot box per chapter.
Stranded: the one mission with mission-specific loot
Stranded is the open-zone mission in the middle of the Korean invasion arc, and it’s the only MW4 mission with a genuine loot loop built into the single-player experience. IGN’s Simon Cardy review in progress calls it “the standout mission across the roughly seven hours it took me to complete the campaign,” and our Modern Warfare 4 campaign length guide walks through the structure.
How Stranded works:
- You spawn in a basement hideout with three main objectives on a large snowy Korean map.
- You can fast-travel between the three key locations and complete the mission quickly, or you can slow down and explore.
- Exploring finds exotic weaponry (specific named weapons hidden in the world), keypad puzzles that open locked stashes, and side encounters with named enemies.
- Resources you loot (weapons, crafting materials, intel) get crafted back at the hideout into new equipment, using the same Forward Operating Base loop that DMZ uses.
The mission borrows DMZ mechanics directly, which is why Activision built it that way: it previews the DMZ extraction mode that unlocks on October 20 for the same pre-order group. If you finish the campaign before October 19, you’ll already understand the loot-and-craft loop when DMZ Early Access opens.
Stranded doesn’t unlock anything that doesn’t otherwise drop from a standard MW4 mission. It’s a single-player mission that takes longer if you play it the way it’s designed. Cardy says you can “spend a couple of hours” chasing every secret or move on with the story in 30-40 minutes. The exotic weapons you find in Stranded are part of the single-player weapon pool; they don’t transfer to multiplayer or DMZ.
What doesn’t unlock from the campaign
A few things players regularly ask about that don’t carry from MW4’s campaign:
- Vault Edition content does not drop during campaign play. The Signature Weapons (Kastov 762 Voltspine, ISO Nightshade Venenosa, Rezi 12 Enforcer, Oris 8.6 Razor and Combat Knife) unlock with the multiplayer at launch on October 23, not during the campaign. BlackCell activates with Season 1 on November 6.
- DMZ Deployment Bonus contents aren’t campaign rewards. Activision hasn’t published what’s in the DMZ Deployment Bonus that comes with the Vault Edition. They say the contents are “coming closer to” the October 20 DMZ Early Access window, which implies it drops in DMZ, not in the campaign.
- No co-op campaign rewards. MW4 doesn’t have a co-op campaign, so there are no shared co-op rewards. Activision’s press materials for MW4 don’t list co-op campaign support, and the previous Modern Warfare titles didn’t have it either.
- The new Warzone isn’t a campaign reward. The new Warzone ships as part of the MW4 install but isn’t playable until Season 1 on November 6. Finishing the campaign doesn’t unlock it early.
Vault vs Standard: what changes if you own Digital Vault
The Vault Edition is mostly a Season 1 convenience pack rather than a campaign upgrade, per our Modern Warfare 4 Editions Compared guide. The campaign experience is identical between Standard and Vault. The Vault’s added content is all for multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone:
- 5 Signature Weapons with Apex Attachments: a Kastov 762 Voltspine Arc, an ISO Nightshade Venenosa SMG, a Rezi 12 Enforcer pump-action shotgun, an Oris 8.6 Razor three-knife marksman rifle, and a Combat Knife. Unlock at launch in multiplayer.
- BlackCell Season 1: 1,100 COD Points, 20 Tier Skips, exclusive BlackCell Operator and Blueprint drops. Activates with Season 1 Battle Pass.
- Hostile Alliance Operator Pack: Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix variants. Lands in MW4 at launch, in Warzone in Season 1.
- Special Forces Operator Pack: 4 Coalition Operators from the campaign’s force (COM SFT France, KSK Amphibious Germany, South Korean Special Forces, SAS UK). Same Season 1 rollout.
- DMZ Deployment Bonus: contents not yet published.
If you pre-ordered Standard and want the Vault content after launch, the in-game upgrade costs $30. The 10% Loyalty Discount (10% off Vault for prior CoD owners) doesn’t apply to upgrades.
FAQ
What do you get for completing the MW4 campaign?
Operator XP, weapon XP and Battle Pass tier progress feed into your multiplayer and DMZ Operators on the same Activision ID. Mission select opens for all 16 missions, and harder-difficulty completions typically unlock calling cards and emblems. Activision hasn’t published the exact MW4 unlock list yet. The campaign doesn’t drop Vault Edition content (Signature Weapons, BlackCell, Operator Packs); those are for multiplayer Season 1.
Do campaign rewards carry over to multiplayer?
Yes, with the limits above. Operator XP, weapon XP and Battle Pass progress all carry. Calling cards, emblems and cosmetics earned during the campaign follow your Activision ID. COD Points bought with real money stay locked to the platform store you bought them on; COD Points earned through the Battle Pass stay locked to the platform where you earned the tier.
What is the “Following Orders lockbox” in MW4?
Activision hasn’t published a per-mission loot table for MW4, and the campaign rules don’t promise a named loot box per chapter. Community posts about a “Following Orders lockbox” come from players documenting what they find in missions. The closest officially confirmed equivalent in the campaign is the Stranded mission’s open-zone stashes, which use DMZ’s extraction-style loot loop and can include exotic weaponry and keypad-puzzle rewards.
What’s in the Stranded mission in MW4?
Stranded is the open-zone mission in the Korean arc. You spawn in a basement hideout with three main objectives and can either fast-travel through them or spend “a couple of hours” (per IGN’s Cardy) chasing every snow-covered secret, including exotic weaponry, keypad puzzles, and side encounters. Looted resources get crafted into new equipment back at the hideout. The exotic weapons stay in the single-player weapon pool; they don’t transfer to multiplayer or DMZ.
Do weapons from campaign unlock in multiplayer?
Not directly. The weapons you find in Stranded are single-player weapons for that mission’s combat. The weapons you unlock for multiplayer come from the normal multiplayer progression (challenges, Battle Pass tiers, the in-game store). Vault Edition’s 5 Signature Weapons are a separate multiplayer unlock that comes with your edition; they don’t drop during campaign play.
Does finishing the MW4 campaign unlock anything in DMZ?
No mission-specific carry into DMZ. The DMZ Deployment Bonus that ships with the Vault Edition is a Day 1 DMZ unlock, but its contents haven’t been published yet; Activision says the contents are coming closer to the DMZ Early Access window on October 20. What does help is the Operator XP and DMZ mechanics learned in Stranded: finishing Stranded before October 20 means you’ll already know the loot-and-craft loop when DMZ unlocks for the same pre-order group.
Does the campaign carry over to DMZ and the new Warzone?
Operator XP and weapon XP carry into DMZ when it unlocks on October 20 for pre-orders and October 23 for everyone else. The new Warzone ships with the MW4 install but isn’t playable until Season 1 on November 6. Finishing the campaign doesn’t unlock Warzone early.
Is the MW4 campaign worth playing just for the unlocks?
If your only goal is multiplayer and DMZ progression, no. The Operator XP you earn is real, but the campaign gives you roughly 7 hours of XP that you could earn faster grinding multiplayer. The reason to play the campaign is the campaign itself: it’s the best Modern Warfare has been since the 2019 reboot, per IGN, and it takes about 7 hours on Regular. Our MW4 reviews roundup covers what critics are saying. Our MW4 campaign length guide breaks down the 16 missions and the standout Stranded mission.
The MW4 campaign is best understood as a 7-hour, $69.99 single-player story with multiplayer XP and Battle Pass progress as a useful side benefit, not as a loot treadmill. Activision hasn’t published a per-mission reward table, and the “Following Orders lockbox” search traffic seems to be community-side players documenting their playthroughs. The only confirmed mission-specific loot loop is Stranded, and the rewards there stay in single-player. The Vault Edition is a multiplayer Season 1 convenience pack, not a campaign upgrade; if you mainly want the campaign, Standard is enough.
