GeoGuessr, the Street View-based geography guessing game (Google Street View being the 360-degree photo layer Google has been stitching together since 2007), dropped a Halloween-themed limited-time mode called HorrorGuessr on October 16, 2026, turning one of the most-played geography games on the web into a roguelike survival horror. (A roguelike here means each 30-day run is built randomly around game-mechanic items and a 30-day clock.) The mode is free in the browser and on Steam through November 16, 2026, and a GeoGuessr Pro subscription is not required to play it, according to Automaton’s full write-up (in Japanese).
The core trick is the same: a random Google Street View location is dropped on you, and you have to find it on the world map. In HorrorGuessr, though, a monster called the Bllack Pano chases you across the map. Each guess pins a point on the world map, and the further your guess is from the right answer, the more damage you take. Survive a day, the monster gets faster; survive 30 days, and you face the final boss.
Eleven bosses appear every five days, each with its own gimmick. One of them flips the Street View upside down, according to Automaton. Bosses are fought not with weapons but with geography guesses: the closer your pin to the right answer than the boss’s, the more damage you deal. Players earn 2 gold per day, the in-game merchant refreshes every other day with over 100 power-up items, and a small set of spells (direction hints, distance reads) run on a limited charge.
HorrorGuessr is described as “extremely difficult” in the official page copy, but Automaton’s reviewer found three difficulty levels and that the spells can lower the bar enough for first-time GeoGuessr players to get involved. It is the company’s most ambitious free-to-play launch in some time; standard GeoGuessr has for years gated the better multiplayer and party modes behind the GeoGuessr Pro subscription. Halloween-event drops have become a broader industry trend this October, and HorrorGuessr lands the same week as Crimson Eye’s return to Phasmophobia, the Gears of War: E-Day Halloween event, and the second half of Pokemon Go’s Halloween 2026; none of them survival-horror flavored, but all of them chasing the same October browsers.
HorrorGuessr is unusual for a Halloween drop because it is genuinely the new mode rather than a Halloween costume on an existing one: the roguelike 30-day run, the chasing monster, the boss gauntlet, none of which exists in standard GeoGuessr. The closest comparisons on Pixel Herald are the Roguelike rhythm launch Alpha Nomos and Gino’s free English demo for the roguelite Bless You Again, but those are full roguelikes built around combat. HorrorGuessr instead keeps the geography loop and adds pressure on top of it. That’s an interesting model for a 100M+ player casual game to test: a Steam-free, browser-first, no-account-required (for the official page) spin on its own loop. If it sticks, expect a winter or spring themed mode next — and more free modes overall, on top of a Pro subscription that has historically been the only way to get more than the daily challenge.
Can you play it in English?
Yes, and you probably already can. HorrorGuessr ships only in English at launch; there is no Japanese translation in either the browser or Steam version, though the browser version’s built-in translation layer will give you a workable Japanese pass through Google. GeoGuessr is available on iOS and Android as a separate app, but that app does not include HorrorGuessr. The mode is browser and Steam Edition only (Steam appid 3478870). A GeoGuessr Pro subscription is not required, but you need a free GeoGuessr account, or sign in with your Steam login on Steam. Browser play is global with no region locks; the GeoGuessr Steam Edition is also sold globally in every region where Steam operates. The mode is also available through to November 16, so there is room to wait and try it later rather than chase the first-day leaderboards.
The user Marcus_Geoguessr (an account attached to the GeoGuessr community team) posted the launch announcement to the official r/geoguessr subreddit on October 16 and linked the official trailer on the GeoGuessr YouTube channel. Per SOURCES.md the Reddit post is a tip rather than a citable outlet, so it is flagged here for context only; the official Halloween-mode page and Automaton carry every claim above.
