Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s campaign is sitting at roughly 90% positive on Steam, with the cast publicly responding to player praise five days before the full launch on October 23, 2026.
The score, captured by both PCGamesN’s reporting and Steam’s own review JSON, comes from the Campaign Early Access window that opened on October 16 for anyone who pre-ordered digitally. Because the multiplayer hasn’t unlocked yet, every Steam rating is a campaign review. Steam Community reviewers are calling it “amazing,” “much darker than recent games,” and “graphically stunning” with “really good performance” per the public review feeds on the Steam Community reviews page.
The actors who brought those missions to life have been reading every comment. Barry Sloane, voicing Captain John Price across the Modern Warfare reboot trilogy, posted this week: “Thank you for all the kind words. I see them. I read them. And I am grateful.” Samuel Roukin, who voices Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley, added: “Poured our guts into this. Now it’s yours. Your messages have been amazing. I’ve read them all. Thank you. The COD community is special.” Maria Elisa Carmago, voicing Valeria Garza, wrote: “Overwhelmed by your love… I don’t have words at this moment. Honored and humbled by this experience and reading every word you share with me.” Director of Production Graham Hagmair framed it as a casting-director credit: “A big thank you to our stellar Casting Directors, Emily Schweber and Karan Sadow, who brought together an extraordinary group of talent.”
That reception marks a noticeable swing from 2022’s Modern Warfare 2 (which PCGamesN’s Jordan called “just a bit dull”) and 2023’s Modern Warfare 3 (which Paul called “the most disposable, forgettable, and, worst of all, boring COD game to date”). The campaign also lands against last year’s Black Ops 7 reception. Vanguard-era storytelling has been a recurring critique of the franchise since 2022.
Pixel Herald’s own player tracking lines up: the Call of Duty Steam hub (appid 1938090) hit a tracked peak of 108,471 concurrent players overnight, up 253% on the 30,705 week-ago peak. See our MW4 108K peak story. The new high landed with most reviewers on the Early Access window.1
Both Sloane and Roukin also asked fans to hold off on spoilers in replies: “Remember, let’s allow people to enjoy the game in their own time. No spoilers.”
The 90% Steam score is a campaign-only number, and once multiplayer arrives on October 23 it could shift, since past Call of Duty entries often see their early single-player scores change after multiplayer reviews land. PCGamesN’s Allsop flags that for the Modern Warfare 2 (2022) and Modern Warfare 3 (2023) reboots, the campaign-only praise rarely survived contact with the multiplayer launch. For now, players are telling Infinity Ward that this is the standout story-led Call of Duty of the recent reboot era. The 16-mission structure (see our campaign length guide) matches the focused single-player design that drove those reviews, and our roundup of critic reviews is rolling in at MW4 Reviews Roundup. Full launch runs October 23 (DMZ Early Access opens October 20 for digital pre-orders per the Steam store page). The MW4 hub is tracking every release-time, editions, and crossplay page we have live.
