Tuesday opens with a launch, a warning shot from Redmond, and a very good deal on the extraction shooter that just had its best weekend in months. Here is your morning brief.
The big one
Planet Zoo 2 is out today on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, and Frontier Developments is putting a real-world conservation partnership on the box. The sequel pairs with a working wildlife group, so part of what you build in-game connects to habitat work in the field. Frontier has a track record of doing this with Planet Zoo’s ambassador program, and the second game is leaning harder on it, with breeding programs and habitat design that line up with the partner’s actual recommendations. Our Planet Zoo 2 launch story has the partner name and the programs involved, and our Planet Zoo 2 beginner’s guide is up for anyone who wants to skip straight to the good zoo layouts.
Our read: Zoo tycoons live or die on whether the building is satisfying, and the conservation hook is a smart way to make the case that the thing you’re building means something. If the partner work lands, this is the launch of the year for the genre, and a refreshing counterweight to a year full of live-service and extraction launches.

- Xbox CEO Asha Sharma says Microsoft must keep inventing new IP, even while doubling down on Fallout, Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft. Sharma told the Xbox Town Hall that “we will not survive if we only revive on the past,” in remarks Windows Central obtained from multiple sources, after a summer of cuts that saw Ninja Theory, Double Fine, and Compulsion restructured or shut down. It’s a candid acknowledgment that the studio’s biggest franchises aren’t enough on their own.
- Two Shin Chan games are coming to Switch 2 on March 4, 2027, with a physical bundle. Publisher Neos confirmed Switch 2 editions of Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation and Shiro and the Coal Town, and a physical bundle, per Nintendo Life. Digital owners of the originals get a discount. Our Shin Chan Switch 2 story has the dates and pricing.
- Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii released a short adventure game he made with AI in 30 minutes. The browser-only 取調室の小宮 is a five-to-ten-minute personal project, not a commercial release, but it’s getting attention because Horii built it with a generative tool. Worth a play; not a referendum on the future of game-making.
- Street Fighter 6’s Year 4 kicks off today with the new character Arjun and C. Viper’s Outfit 4. Capcom’s fighter is now in the middle of its fourth post-launch season. Our SF6 Arjun story has the trailer and what the new fighter plays like.
- Dave the Diver is getting a Subnautica 2 crossover content pack in early 2027. MINTROCKET confirmed the crossover, which is a natural fit for a seafood-diving management sim. Our Dave the Diver crossover story has the trailer.
Out today
A real launch day, for once. Planet Zoo 2 and Valor Mortis (the first-person soulslike whose reviews are split) are both out on PC, PS5, and Xbox. Tomorrow brings Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 and Thursday lands Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, the It Takes Two Switch 2 edition, Ratatan, and the Toy Story 3 complete edition. Plan your weekend accordingly.
Deal of the day
ARC Raiders is $19.99 on Steam, 50% off, running through October 15. The extraction shooter just had its best weekend in seven months, peaking at 185,000 concurrent players, and if you’ve been waiting for a reason to try it, this is the cheapest it’s been since launch. The Frozen Trail update and a free trial did most of the heavy lifting over the weekend, and a half-price entry is the right time to find out whether the surge sticks.
One more thing
Space Quest is back, kind of. MMMera, Inc. and Guillotine Games announced Monday that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a federal registration of the SPACE QUEST mark for video game software, and dropped a teaser for an original new game with voice work from Josh Mandel, the Sierra veteran. It’s its own story and characters, not a remake, and the goal is “new that captures that sense of humor, adventure and discovery.” If you ever lost a weekend to Roger Wilco, this one’s for you.
