Planet Zoo 2 unlocks worldwide on October 13, 2026 at 3pm BST (10am EDT, 7am PDT). The first hour is easier if you know a few things going in: the difference between Standard and Deluxe, what the pre-order bonus actually includes, and the new mechanics that change the original Planet Zoo formula. This guide answers the ten questions most players ask the day before launch, with everything sourced from Frontier Developments, Valve, and the Steam store page.

When does Planet Zoo 2 unlock?

Planet Zoo 2 launches on October 13, 2026 at the same moment worldwide: 3pm BST (Frontier Developments, countdown post). Here is when that lands in the main regions:

  • 7am PDT
  • 9am CDT
  • 10am EDT
  • 11am BRT
  • 3pm BST
  • 4pm CEST
  • 10pm CST / SGT
  • 11pm KST / JST
  • 1am AEDT (October 14)

Full timezone table in our release-time post. Pre-loads are already live on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. NVIDIA GeForce NOW also opens the game at the same moment, per Frontier.

Standard vs Deluxe: which edition should you buy?

Frontier sells two editions, both at official price on the pre-order page and Steam (appid 3219030):

Edition US price UK price EU price What is added
Standard $49.99 £44.99 €54.99 The full base game
Deluxe $64.99 £54.99 €64.99 6 extra species, exclusive animal signs, and the same pre-order Bonus Content Pack

The Deluxe upgrade costs $15 more and adds 6 animal species from across the globe: the Golden Eagle, Golden Lion Tamarin, Great Hammerhead Shark, Axolotl, Blue and Gold Fusilier, and Longfin Batfish (Frontier, pre-order page). The set leans into the new aquatic and flying categories rather than the standard zoo menagerie.

What is in the pre-order Bonus Content Pack?

Every pre-order of either edition unlocks a Bonus Content Pack at launch (Frontier, countdown post):

  • An exclusive Toucan Eat Shop and Signage
  • 3 unique Animal Donation Bins
  • A Tiger Photo Stand-In Wall

Frontier says the pack will be included with all pre-orders right up until launch time. If you have not pre-ordered yet, you can still grab it on the morning of October 13. After launch, the pack is no longer guaranteed.

What is new in Planet Zoo 2 compared to the original?

The sequel is built around three big additions, per the Frontier game page and a Notebookcheck launch preview (Oct 12, 2026):

  • Fully aquatic animals. Freshwater and saltwater aquariums with species like blacktip reef sharks, sea turtles, and the new Javanese cownose ray. The 2019 game had no real underwater play; this is the headliner feature.
  • Freely flying birds. Aviaries now hold free-flying species like toco toucans and secretary birds, not just the clipped-wing animals from the original.
  • Wildlife Reserves. Beyond the commercial zoo, you can build and customize nature reserves and release animals into the wild. Conservation has real mechanics, not just flavor text.

Frontier also says terrain editing, plant placement, and path building have all been retooled with better tools.

What game modes does Planet Zoo 2 have?

Three, per Notebookcheck:

  • Career Mode is a structured run with goals and progression, the right place to start if you want a guided first session.
  • Franchise Mode is the classic Planet Zoo long-form mode, with money, research, and trade across multiple zoos.
  • Sandbox Mode gives unlimited money and freedom, the right place to spend your first hour if you only care about building.

The game is single-player only. There is no multiplayer, no crossplay, and no live-service hook in the box at launch. Steam Cloud saves are enabled for cross-device play on PC.

What are the PC system requirements?

Per the official Steam page via Notebookcheck, Planet Zoo 2 is a moderate PC game by 2026 standards:

  • Minimum: 16 GB RAM, GeForce RTX 2060, 64-bit Windows 10 or 11
  • Recommended: GeForce RTX 3070, 16 GB RAM

It is already rated Verified for the Steam Deck (Notebookcheck, citing Valve). For the full breakdown and download size, see our PC specs and Steam Deck post.

How is Planet Zoo 2 performing pre-launch?

Planet Zoo 2 was already the #2 best-seller on Steam in Germany and the #7 worldwide before launch, with all sales from pre-orders alone (Notebookcheck, Oct 12). For comparison, the same Steam top sellers list put Aion 2 in first, with EA Sports FC 27 and ARC Raiders behind Planet Zoo 2 in Germany. Frontier last zoo game, the 2019 Planet Zoo, has sold millions of copies; the pre-order chart position suggests a sequel launch on the same scale.

Where to start your first hour

If you are new to Planet Zoo:

  1. Start in Career Mode. It walks you through the new aquarium and aviary mechanics, which the original never had.
  2. Build a small aquarium first. Blacktip reef sharks and the Javanese cownose ray are the cleanest showcase of the new aquatic system. Stick to one tank while you learn the welfare rules.
  3. Do not open a Wildlife Reserve on day one. Reserve management is its own economy; you will want a profitable zoo funding it first.

If you played the 2019 Planet Zoo:

  1. Start in Sandbox. You already know the basics. The 6 extra Deluxe species and the new aquatic animals are the headline, not the menus.
  2. Re-do one of your old zoos. A lot of the old constraints (no water, no free-flying birds) are gone. Rebuild your favorite exhibit and see how different it feels.

Our read

Most players should pre-order Deluxe at $64.99. The $15 upgrade gets you 6 species that are genuinely fun to build around, and the exclusive animal signs are the kind of detail that pays off in long Franchise Mode runs. If you only want the base game and a short Career playthrough, wait for a Standard sale: Frontier ran repeated deep discounts on the original Planet Zoo, and a sequel sale usually lands within 6 months of launch.

The bigger question is whether Planet Zoo 2 is worth a launch-day buy over a release-weekend sale. The pre-order chart position says yes, the Steam Deck Verified rating says it will run well on a wider range of hardware than the 2019 game did at launch, and the Wildlife Reserves are the kind of long-form feature that makes the franchise worth following. Tomorrow morning is a fine time to start.
