Enshrouded Crossplay: PC and PS5 Status After 1.0, Explained
Image: Keen Games GmbH

Quick answer

  1. No. Enshrouded 1.0 launched on Steam and PlayStation 5 at the same time on October 15, 2026, but crossplay between the two ecosystems is not enabled. PC players and PS5 players are playing in separate worlds.
  2. Keen Games has confirmed crossplay is in development, but the studio has not given a release timeline, so the wait is open-ended.
  3. Cross-progression is also not enabled. Cosmetics, base builds, character unlocks, and Embervale progress stay on the platform you earned them on.
  4. Each ecosystem runs its own 16-player co-op. A PS5 squad and a PC squad cannot join each other’s worlds.
  5. Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 versions have not been announced. Enshrouded 1.0 is a PC + PS5 launch only.

What the 1.0 launch actually shipped with

Enshrouded left Steam Early Access on October 15, 2026, after more than two and a half years, with the same 1.0 build landing on PC and PlayStation 5 simultaneously. Both ecosystems unlocked at 15:00 UTC, per the launch map Keen Games posted on its Steam launch FAQ (the unlock table is in our Enshrouded Release Time guide). The launch ended Enshrouded’s status as a PC exclusive and opened the game to the PlayStation survival-crafting audience for the first time.

By the third day after launch (Sunday, October 18), Enshrouded’s 1.0 build had pulled a 113,542 concurrent-player Steam peak per Pixel Herald’s hourly Steam sample (see Enshrouded 1.0 Hits 113K Peak on Steam and our Player Counts page). The day-by-day move matters here: Steam concurrent-player counts were 102,491 on Saturday (October 17, per SteamDB), up to 113,542 on Sunday (October 18, per our hourly sample). That is a roughly 11,000-player jump in 24 hours. It is also the highest Steam player count the game has recorded since its January 2024 Early Access high of 160,361. The PS5 launch lifted numbers that had been soft for two years, and it is the first time Enshrouded has crossed 100,000 concurrent players since the survival-crafting boom peak in early 2024.

Enshrouded 1.0 launched on Steam and PlayStation 5 simultaneously on October 15, 2026. Embervale is the open-world survival setting of Enshrouded, a kingdom being rebuilt after a creeping magical corruption called the Shroud. The 1.0 release opens the full Embervale map and adds a new high-level region: Cinder’s Cradle, a lava-and-floating-islands area above the Ancients ruins. The same combat reworks apply across both versions: mana drain, entangle, Blizzard, Ball Lightning, four summon totems, Hollow Skeleton summon. The same level caps apply too (Flame raises past 9, player cap hits 45). Existing PC Early Access saves carry over after a one-time conversion to the new save format. Keen Games suggests a fresh start anyway, because the world and early-game areas have been substantially rebuilt for 1.0.

The official crossplay position

Crossplay is the line 1.0 stops short of. Keen Games confirmed in its Steam launch FAQ, the same FAQ that published the per-region unlock table, that cross-platform play is not enabled at launch. The same FAQ notes that crossplay is in development, but the studio has not given a release window. As of October 18, 2026, the FAQ text has not been updated with a new timeline.

The Steam store page’s tag list reflects this. The categories under which Steam classifies Enshrouded 1.0 are: Single-player, Multi-player, Co-op, Online Co-op, Steam Achievements, Full controller support, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing. The “Cross-Platform Multiplayer” tag that games with PC+console crossplay carry is absent, and so is the “Online PvP” tag (Enshrouded does not have PvP in 1.0). The absence of the cross-platform tag in 2026 is a strong signal in itself: Valve adds it for games that have working console-to-PC or console-to-console multiplayer, and Keen Games has not yet earned that tag for Enshrouded.

So the practical answer is: PC players and PS5 players can both play Enshrouded 1.0 in 16-player co-op, but the two ecosystems are walled off. If your friend group is split between Steam and PS5, the version each player owns decides who they can climb, build, and fight alongside.

What’s confirmed vs not announced

Here is what is and is not on record about each platform’s status:

Platform Enshrouded version Crossplay status
PC (Steam) 1.0, released Oct 15, 2026 Plays in the Steam ecosystem
PlayStation 5 1.0, released Oct 15, 2026 (PS5 Pro support day-one) Plays in the PSN ecosystem; no PC crossplay
Xbox Series X|S Not announced No version, no crossplay
Nintendo Switch 2 Not announced No version, no crossplay

The Xbox and Switch 2 rows are deliberately blank. Keen Games has not announced a native Xbox version, has not announced a native Switch 2 version, and has not suggested that either console is in active development. That is consistent with the way the studio has talked about 1.0: the focus was a clean PC + PS5 simultaneous launch after the Early Access years, not a multi-platform rollout. Pushing the 1.0 build to two new platforms at the same time would be a separate effort.

How to play with friends on the same platform

Because PC and PS5 are walled off from each other, the only way to play Enshrouded in 16-player co-op right now is to coordinate on the platform you intend to play on. The Steam page’s feature list opens with: “Walk this path alone or in co-op with up to 16 players. Fight, build, farm, or explore: every role matters in rebuilding the kingdom.” That cap is the design target, not a limit you will hit through normal play. Most public servers fill long before the 16-player ceiling.

If your friends are on Steam, link up through Steam’s friend system and invite from the Enshrouded in-game menu; if they are on PS5, use PlayStation Network parties and the in-game invite flow. There is no cross-platform invite, no cross-platform text chat, and no cross-platform voice chat, because the two services are not connected.

This is the part that has survival-crafting fans waiting. Games like ARK, Valheim, and Palworld all added crossplay after launch once the studio had a stable enough build to risk unifying the player pools. Enshrouded is now on the same post-launch list. Until Keen Games ships it, two separate Enshrouded games exist, one on Steam and one on PS5, even though they share the same world design.

Cross-progression and save carry

Cross-progression is a separate question from crossplay, and the answer is the same: not enabled. Cosmetics earned on Steam do not follow you to PS5, and PS5 unlocks do not follow you back to Steam. The same character, the same base, the same Embervale world each side builds and rebuilds, stays on the platform that earned it.

The one carry that does work is internal to PC. Existing PC Early Access saves (the worlds and characters anyone bought before October 15, 2026 and played for any length of time) carry over to the new 1.0 build after a one-time conversion to the new save format. Keen Games flagged that the conversion is necessary because the world and early-game areas have been substantially rebuilt for 1.0, and suggested starting fresh to experience the rebuild properly.

PS5 does not get a version of this. PS5 players started from a blank Embervale on October 15, with no carry from any prior platform.

Steam Deck and Linux play

Enshrouded’s Steam categories include Steam Cloud and Family Sharing but do not include a Linux or ProtonDB-relevant tag. The Steam app is Windows-only. If you want to play on Steam Deck, you go through Proton, and the official Steam store page does not promise native Linux support. ProtonDB player reports are the best signal of how Deck play feels. The 16-player co-op scales the same way it would on a desktop Windows install.

We read the Keen Games Steam Launch FAQ (cited in our Enshrouded Release Time guide and again in our Enshrouded 1.0 peak story), the Enshrouded Steam store page, the Pixel Herald Player Counts feed, and our own launch-week coverage to pin down five facts players should plan around before they buy.

First, the crossplay answer is conservative: “in development, no timeline” is not the same as “coming soon.” Other survival-crafting games have shipped crossplay weeks, months, or even a full year after their PC+console launches. Keen Games has not promised a specific patch number, a specific date, or even a specific quarter. Plan around the same “PC and PS5 are separate ecosystems” rule that has been in place since launch.

Second, cross-progression is the bigger miss than crossplay for most players. Survival-crafting games thrive on time invested in a single base, and time invested does not transfer between ecosystems. If you have put 50+ hours into an Embervale world on Steam and want to play with a friend who is on PS5, you are choosing between your existing world and their friend group, not adding both.

Third, the 113K Steam peak by October 18 (per our Player Counts page) is the proof the launch landed. Enshrouded had not crossed 100K concurrent players since January 2024, and the 1.0 + PS5 simultaneous release pushed it past that line within three days. Compare that to Modern Warfare 4’s 108K peak on its October 16 launch day (per our MW4 Steam Hub coverage). A survival indie pulling comparable numbers to a CoD launch is unusual, and the size of the post-launch Steam crowd is the strongest signal that Enshrouded’s 1.0 audience is real.

Fourth, the Xbox and Switch 2 gaps are not “soon” gaps. Keen Games has not announced either version, has not said one is in development, and has not given a release window. The studio’s 1.0 launch was deliberately a two-platform event. If you are waiting for an Xbox Series X|S or Switch 2 version, you are waiting for a separate announcement.

Fifth, the survival-crafting crossplay precedents matter for what the beta is likely to look like when it lands. ARK: Survival Evolved shipped PC+console crossplay in June 2020, after years of platform-locked play. Valheim added Xbox Series X|S crossplay with existing PC servers in March 2024, after roughly a year of console exclusivity following its September 2023 console release. Palworld shipped crossplay between Steam and Xbox in January 2024, as part of a deliberate console partnership that Pocketpair committed to before launch. Keen Games has not signaled which of these models Enshrouded will follow. The safest expectation is a future patch, not a launch-week addition.

Which platform should you buy it on? A short decision aid

The crossplay answer is the same regardless of platform, but which version fits your situation depends on three things:

Your situation Buy it on Why
You have a Steam friend group already playing 1.0 Steam (PC) Their worlds and progress are the Steam worlds; jumping to PS5 would force you to start over in a separate ecosystem.
Your friend group is on PS5 PlayStation 5 Same logic. The PSN ecosystem is where their bases and Embervale progress live.
You have friends split between Steam and PS5 Wait Pick the ecosystem with the larger friend group, or wait for crossplay to land before anyone buys.
You are platform-agnostic and want to play solo or with random players Either Each ecosystem has its own public-server pool; both work for solo or for finding groups.
You already own the PC Early Access version Stay on Steam Your existing save carries over to the 1.0 build after a one-time conversion; PS5 starts you from zero.

The trade-off in plain terms: if you have any history with Enshrouded or any friends playing on one platform, the platform decision is not really yours to make. The platform is set by who you want to play with.

FAQ
