Stranded Deep 2 is the sequel to Beam Team Games‘ 2015 Pacific-island survival hit Stranded Deep. The new game is set in a scorching desert rather than another ocean. Sam Edwards, who co-created the original Stranded Deep and serves as Creative Director on the sequel, walked through the desert setting, two new animals, and a brand-new modular tool-crafting system in a developer blog published Thursday by publisher North Beach Games.
The blog, titled “Natural Selection,” reframes the franchise as a follow-up to Edwards’ own survival work. He co-created the original game at Beam Team. Then North Beach Games (a San Rafael, California-based indie publisher behind last year’s The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria and its Durin’s Folk expansion) picked up the sequel in 2024. The publisher is also running a free weekend for the original Stranded Deep on Steam from October 15–19 and a 60% discount through October 22 to get new players caught up before the sequel’s early access window.
The two animals are the oryx (a gemsbok-inspired desert antelope with meter-long horns that fight back when attacked) and the spoonbill (a roseate spoonbill wading bird with a “danger level” AI system that scares nearby birds). The team confirmed taming and mounts will arrive as dedicated updates later in early access, with the oryx flagged as a future mount.
The big mechanical reveal is modular crafting: every tool has three customizable parts (head, binding, grip). Each material swap changes how the tool looks and performs. Instead of grinding through broken tools, players craft a few they care about and repair them with better materials as they explore further into the desert. Edwards walked readers through the development of a knife and a pickaxe, from concept sketches to blockout 3D models. Rare minerals, hardwoods, leather, metals, and composites all unlock further out from your base camp.
The original Stranded Deep left Early Access in August 2022 and is still a top survival-crafting pick on Steam, with “Very Positive” recent reviews. North Beach Games positioned the sequel for early access on Steam with no release date yet. The full developer blog, with concept art for both animals and the new crafting system, is on the official Stranded Deep 2 site.
Stranded Deep 2 joins a busy fall of survival-crafting early access launches on Steam. The same window covers DREADMOOR’s November 9 Early Access launch, the December 9 Caves of Qud: Diaspora expansion, and the DayZ Badlands expansion. North Beach Games also shipped the Durin’s Folk expansion for Return to Moria this year, so the studio has been visibly shipping survival-crafting content across both owned and licensed IPs.
| Setting | Original Stranded Deep | Stranded Deep 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Biome | Pacific island chain | Scorching desert, canyons, dunes |
| Watercraft | Raft | Mobile raft bases |
| Tool crafting | Standard recipes | Modular head / binding / grip |
| Animal AI | Predators attack on sight | Danger-level system, animals affect each other |
| Taming and mounts | Not present | Confirmed for later early-access updates |
Our read: The shift from Pacific islands to a desert is a smart way to keep the survival loop intact while giving the sequel a meaningfully different terrain and animal roster. The modular crafting system is the kind of upgrade that keeps the long tail interesting across early access. If you’ve been waiting since the 2015 launch to see what Edwards’ team does next, this dev blog is the first real proof of life. The free weekend on the original is the cheapest way to test whether the gameplay still clicks before you wishlist the sequel.
