Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It’s likely to be the biggest launch day in years, so servers will be busy, downloads will be slow, and a lot of people will find their SSD is full. Here’s how to be ready to play the moment it unlocks.

1. Decide on an edition (and pre-order if you’re buying digital)

Rockstar has announced two editions (TechRadar, Windows Central):

  • Standard Edition: $79.99
  • Ultimate Edition: $99.99. It adds extra vehicles, weapons, outfits, in-game businesses and two side missions. Rockstar says you can upgrade from Standard to Ultimate after launch.

Every pre-order gets the Vintage Vice City Pack, which includes a 1955 Vapid Stanier and Tommy Vercetti-inspired weapon skins. Pre-orders opened June 25. Digital pre-orders on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store also include a free month of GTA+, Rockstar’s subscription for GTA Online extras. If you’re unsure, buy Standard. Everything in Ultimate is extra content, and you can upgrade later once you know you love the game. Don’t pay above list price either. Our deals guide explains how to spot a fake discount.

2. Clear more space than you think you need

Rockstar hasn’t published an official file size yet. Red Dead Redemption 2 needed well over 100GB on consoles, and GTA VI’s map is bigger. Most estimates put GTA VI at around 150–200GB, plus a day-one patch. Plan for 250GB of free space. Be careful with any figure that isn’t on the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store page. A widely shared “677GB” number is a hoax.

How much space your console really has:

  • PS5 (original, 825GB): about 667GB usable.
  • PS5 Slim / Digital (1TB): roughly 850GB usable.
  • Xbox Series X (1TB): about 800GB usable.
  • Xbox Series S (512GB): about 364GB usable. This is the tightest. If you have a Series S, expect to delete most of your other games or buy an expansion card.

3. If you need more storage, buy the right kind

  • PS5: add an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD with a heatsink in the internal expansion slot. Sony recommends drives rated at 5,500MB/s or faster.
  • Xbox Series X|S: current-gen games can only run from the internal SSD or an official Storage Expansion Card (Seagate, WD and others make them). A regular USB drive can store games but can’t run them, though it’s a quick way to move other games off the internal drive to make room.

Prices on these drives usually drop around Black Friday, but that’s a week after launch. If you need one for day one, look for a deal in early November.

4. Turn on pre-load and automatic updates

Rockstar hasn’t announced a pre-load date yet. Big releases usually let you pre-load a few days to a week before launch, and early 2025 reports of a tiny “GTA VI download” were only a placeholder, not the game. Make sure your console will download the files as soon as they’re available:

  • PS5: Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings → Automatic Updates: turn on Auto-Download and Auto-Install in Rest Mode. Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode: turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
  • Xbox: Settings → General → Power options: choose Sleep. Settings → System → Updates: turn on Keep my games & apps up to date.

Physical copies have no disc. The box contains a download code, and boxes go on sale November 12, a week early, so you can pre-load before launch (Man of Many). Buying physical saves you nothing on download time, so pick it only if you want the box or a retailer discount.

5. Catch up on the series (optional)

GTA games tell standalone stories, so you don’t need to have played the others. GTA VI returns to Vice City in the state of Leonida, Rockstar’s version of Florida, with two lead characters, Lucia and Jason. If you want the background, 2002’s Vice City is the original visit to the city. GTA V is still the best way to get a feel for modern Rockstar open worlds before November.

6. Plan your launch night

  • Know when it unlocks. Unlock times vary by region and storefront. Check your store’s listing the week of launch.
  • Use a wired connection for the download if you can.
  • Set up parental controls first if there are kids in the house. GTA is rated M for good reason. Here’s how to set them up on every console.
  • Wait on PC. No PC version has been announced. Rockstar usually brings its games to PC later.

Our read: we analyzed Rockstar’s edition details against the storage math above, and the Standard Edition plus 250GB of free space is the setup that covers most players. If you’re on an Xbox Series S, sort out storage before you spend $20 on the Ultimate upgrade. Follow every update on the GTA 6 hub.

Need something to play until then? Here’s everything releasing in October 2026.

We’ll update this guide when Rockstar confirms the file size, pre-load date and unlock times.

Correction (October 9, 2026): We originally implied the physical edition includes a disc. GTA 6's physical edition is a download code in a box, available from November 12.
