Tropico 7 is officially coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, Kalypso Media confirmed this week, and it lands on the same day as every other version: January 28, 2027.
The city-builder and political sim got its January 28, 2027 release date for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC at Gamescom in August 2026. The Switch 2 version was the last major holdout, and now it’s locked in, with a dedicated port from Engine Software, the studio behind the Switch versions of Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch and other heavyweight ports.
What’s special about the Switch 2 edition
Kalypso is calling the Switch 2 release the Tropico 7 Special Edition, and it’s not just a straight port. Two features use the new hardware:
- Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for more precise island building and management
- GameChat support, so you can talk with friends or share your screen while running your archipelago
That’s a meaningful upgrade over Tropico 6 on the original Switch, which launched in 2020 and ran well but couldn’t lean on the new console’s unique inputs.
What we know about the game
The pitch is the same Tropico fantasy, with a few new toys:
- Terraforming, the series’ first. You can flatten mountains, dig lakes, build coastlines, or even expand your landmass by filling in parts of the sea. Very large mountains can’t be fully removed, and certain sea areas have to stay open for ships.
- Scalable zones, so plantations, parks, and botanical gardens can grow to whatever size fits your layout.
- A council system for dealing with the eight local factions face-to-face, instead of getting random ultimatums popping up.
- A Faction & Superpower Matrix showing where you stand politically, and which perks or problems come with it.
- Direct El Presidente interactions: your avatar walks through the city, visiting buildings near the palace and waving at (or threatening) citizens.
The campaign runs across 5 maps with a new nemesis, Victoria Guerra, joining El Presidente and his loyal sidekick Penultimo. On top of that, you’re getting 40+ premade maps, 10 scenario missions, and a random map generator for endless replays.
Up to 6 superpowers, from the USA to China, offer unique benefits, but cozying up to one can make the others unfriendly.
