NBA 2K27 Standard Edition joins Xbox Free Play Days this weekend, Microsoft confirmed on Xbox Wire. The basketball sim is free to play from Friday, October 16 at 12pm PDT through Sunday, October 18 for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential members.
It’s a tight window with a real sports hook: the NBA regular season tips off next week, so anyone still on the fence about NBA 2K27 can take the Standard Edition for a full spin before they decide to buy. The free weekend covers The City, MyCAREER, and Play Now with NBA and WNBA rosters. Progress carries over if you grab the game before the weekend ends.
There’s also a reason to commit early. From October 16 to October 29, buying any digital edition of NBA 2K27 throws in an Xbox Gift Card and a 15,000 Virtual Currency pack. The promo runs across the same Game Pass tiers, so members can try the game for free and then buy in with a discount kicker if they want to keep playing.
What’s free this weekend
| Title | Window | Game Pass required? | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| NBA 2K27 Standard Edition | Oct 16, 12pm PDT – Oct 18 | Yes | Lead title, NBA Tip-Off timing |
| Crusader Kings III | Oct 15 – Oct 18 | Yes | Dynasty grand strategy |
| Bus Simulator 21 Next Stop | Oct 15 – Oct 18 | Yes | Licensed buses, online co-op |
| Soccer Story | Oct 15 – Oct 18 | Yes | 85% off for buyers |
| Ravenswatch | Oct 15 – Oct 18 | Yes | 65% off + new Kintaro DLC |
| The Alters | Oct 15 – Oct 18 | No | 3-hour free trial, no membership |
The Alters trial is the only one that doesn’t need a Game Pass membership, so anyone with an Xbox Live account can play it. The other five require Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or Essential to download.
To grab them: sign in on Xbox.com, head to each game’s page, and install through the Microsoft Store, or open the Subscriptions tab on your Xbox console and find the Free Play Days collection on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
This week’s timing lands days after the delisting of NBA 2K25, which became the focus of the new “Power To The Players Act” bill targeting the FTC and gave 2K Sports another week of negative attention. A free NBA 2K27 weekend right before tip-off is the clearest sign yet that 2K wants lapsed players back on the latest build, not still-owning the older one.
Our take: Free Play Days is a routine Thursday thing, but timing a basketball sim free weekend against the actual NBA tip-off is the right move. If you’re a Game Pass member who’s been wondering whether NBA 2K27 is worth $69.99 this year, this is the cheapest way to find out.
