Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 pre-orders now get you into DMZ early. Activision says anyone who has digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased the game can play the full extraction mode starting Tuesday, October 20, three days before the October 23 launch. Campaign early access still opens on Friday, October 16.
DMZ takes place on Hajin, a new open map built from locations in the campaign, and its story picks up after the campaign ends. You loot, take on objectives, fight AI enemies and rival squads, and try to get out before you lose everything you’re carrying.
The big new system is crafting. Between runs you sit at a Forward Operating Base with a 3D Printer, which turns two kinds of loot into gear: four basic Resources (Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals) and rarer Printer Ingredients such as Biomaterials and Detonators. New recipes show up as you level, and you can find more on deployments if you make it out alive.
There are three ways to drop in. Story Missions are replayable narrative jobs with high-value rewards, Dynamic Operations hand your squad a set of goals plus a Supply Drop for finishing them, and Free Roam is exactly what it sounds like.
Operators also persist now. You start with two Operator slots and unlock a third, and each one levels up by surviving. Successful exfils earn Trait Points to spend across Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist trees, up to 18 points from a pool of more than 60 traits.
Persistent Operators are the part to watch. They give a death real weight, which is what made the original DMZ stick with people, though it also means a bad run costs you more than a loadout.
