Is Hokko Spaces Cross-Platform? Switch and PC Crossplay, Explained
Image: Team17

Quick answer: No, Hokko Spaces is not cross-platform. The Switch, Switch 2 and Steam (PC) versions are separate ecosystems with no shared save data, no cross-progression, and no cross-buy. The game is also a single-player experience, so there is no online crossplay to enable either. The Switch version works on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 via the same SKU; the PC version is a separate Steam purchase.

The game launches on October 29, 2026 on Switch, Switch 2, and PC via Steam, publisher Team17 confirmed on its official Bluesky account in October 2026. The version you buy on the eShop and the version you buy on Steam are independent purchases that don’t share anything beyond the same diorama-building sandbox underneath. For the launch timing, see our Hokko Spaces Release Time guide, and for the gameplay basics see our Hokko Spaces Beginner’s Guide.

What “cross-platform” means for Hokko Spaces

Players regularly mix up four things when they ask “is X cross-platform”:

  • Cross-play. The ability to play online with friends on other platforms. Hokko Spaces has no online multiplayer at all, so cross-play is moot.
  • Cross-progression. Your save data (your dioramas, your unlocked residents, your camera-mode snapshots) following you between platforms. Hokko Spaces does not support cross-progression: the Switch saves live on the Switch / Nintendo Switch Online cloud, the Steam saves live on Steam Cloud, and the two never sync.
  • Cross-buy. Buying once and getting the game on multiple platforms. Hokko Spaces is sold as a separate SKU on each storefront, so a Switch purchase does not unlock a Steam copy and vice versa.
  • Cross-device play. Playing the same physical Switch cartridge across Switch and Switch 2 consoles. The Hokko Spaces Nintendo Switch SKU plays on both Switch and Switch 2, per the Nintendo eShop product page, which lists file sizes for both consoles (1.2 GB on Switch, 1 GB on Switch 2). The Switch 2 hardware reads the Switch version natively.

The closest thing to cross-platform Hokko Spaces has is the Switch-Switch 2 cross-device read: a single Nintendo Switch SKU that runs on both console generations. That is hardware compatibility, not a feature Team17 enabled: it is how Nintendo handles backward-compatible Switch software on Switch 2.

What does and doesn’t sync between platforms

Item Switch & Switch 2 Switch & Steam Notes
Single-player save data (your dioramas, unlocked residents, snapshots) No (separate per-console saves even on Switch family) No Each console and Steam installation holds its own save.
Nintendo Switch Online cloud save Yes within Switch / Switch 2 family N/A on Steam NSO backs up Switch saves only. Steam Cloud is the parallel service on PC.
Steam Cloud save N/A Yes within one Steam account Backs up your dioramas if you reinstall Steam or move PCs.
Achievements / in-game unlocks Per-device Per-platform No shared achievement pool.
Cross-buy No No One purchase unlocks one storefront’s copy.
Camera-mode snapshots exported to social media Yes (per console) Yes (per Steam install) Snapshots are local to the platform you played on; export is up to you.
DLC bought on Switch Available on Switch and Switch 2 via the same SKU N/A No Switch DLC has been announced.
DLC bought on Steam N/A Available on the Steam account No Steam DLC has been announced.

The Switch / Switch 2 row is the one most players miss. Even though the same physical cartridge or eShop download runs on both consoles, the save data is per-device by default. Nintendo Switch Online cloud save can back up Switch saves and restore them on another Switch, but the save is still tied to the Nintendo account and the Switch ecosystem, not the Steam ecosystem.

The single-player answer to “is it cross-platform?”

Hokko Spaces is built around diorama building, weather and season controls, residents wandering into your spaces, and a camera mode for snapshots. None of those systems have any online component. Per the Nintendo eShop product page, the game supports TV mode, Tabletop mode, and Handheld mode on Switch. There is no mention of online multiplayer, co-op, leaderboards, or shared-worlds functionality. The same applies to the Steam version: no online multiplayer in any of the announced features.

That means the cross-platform question doesn’t even apply to live multiplayer. It only matters if you want to share your dioramas across devices (which the camera-mode export handles as a manual save-and-share step) or if you want to keep playing the same save when you move from a Switch to a PC (which requires starting over on the new platform).

How Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 compatibility works here

The Hokko Spaces Nintendo Switch SKU plays on both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 hardware, per the Nintendo eShop US product page. The Switch 2 hardware reads the Switch game natively (no separate Switch 2 SKU is being sold for Hokko Spaces), and the eShop page lists separate file-size estimates for each console:

  • Nintendo Switch: 1.2 GB
  • Nintendo Switch 2: 1 GB (more efficient compression on the new hardware)

There is no “Switch 2 Edition” upgrade path or paid enhancement for Hokko Spaces: it is a single SKU that runs on whichever console you put it on. If you bought the digital version on the Nintendo eShop, your license works on both Switch and Switch 2 under the same Nintendo account. If you bought a physical cartridge, the cartridge plays on both consoles.

Save data does not automatically sync between a Switch and a Switch 2. To move saves between the two, you need to use Nintendo Switch Online cloud save (if you have an active NSO membership) or transfer the save data manually via the Switch’s System Settings > Data Management > Save Data tools.

How Steam Cloud saves work for Hokko Spaces

The Steam version of Hokko Spaces uses Steam Cloud for save backups, so your dioramas, residents, and snapshots back up to Steam’s servers if you have Steam Cloud synchronization turned on in the Steam client. This means:

  • Reinstalling Steam on the same PC restores your Hokko Spaces save.
  • Moving to a new PC and signing in to your Steam account restores the save.
  • A separate Switch / Switch 2 install does not.

Steam Cloud saves do not sync between the Steam version and the Switch / Switch 2 version. The two ecosystems are walled off: Steam’s servers hold the PC save, Nintendo’s servers hold the Switch save.

Will Hokko Spaces add cross-progression later?

There is no official word from Team17 or Wonderscope Games on cross-progression, cross-buy, or cross-save between Switch and PC. None of those features are announced for the launch window. The Switch 2 compatibility is a hardware-level feature, not a software feature Team17 would need to opt into.

If Team17 announces cross-progression or cross-buy later, this page and our Hokko Spaces Release Time guide will be updated the same day.

What Hokko Spaces cross-platform doesn’t cover at launch

A few things to know before launch day, all per the official sources:

  • No online co-op. Hokko Spaces has no online multiplayer, so there’s no cross-platform play to enable in the first place.
  • No cross-buy. The Switch / Switch 2 eShop purchase and the Steam purchase are independent. There is no platform-bundle.
  • No cross-progression. Saves on Switch and saves on Steam don’t sync. Starting over on the new platform is the only option if you switch ecosystems.
  • No shared achievements. In-game achievements and unlocks are per-platform. Unlocking a resident or a weather preset on Switch doesn’t carry over to Steam.
  • No cross-save. No cloud-based bridging between Steam Cloud and Nintendo Switch Online cloud save. The two services don’t talk to each other.

For everything else on Hokko Spaces, including the supported languages (British English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese), the file sizes (1.2 GB on Switch, 1 GB on Switch 2), the absence of preload ETA, and the diorama building tips, the Hokko Spaces Release Time guide and the Hokko Spaces beginner’s guide cover the launch details and gameplay side.

FAQ

Is Hokko Spaces cross-platform?

No. The Switch, Switch 2, and Steam (PC) versions are separate ecosystems. There is no cross-play (the game has no online multiplayer), no cross-progression (saves don’t sync), and no cross-buy (each version is a separate purchase).

Is Hokko Spaces cross-progression?

No. Save data on Switch and save data on Steam do not sync. If you start a diorama on Switch and move to the Steam version, you start over on Steam (and vice versa).

Is Hokko Spaces cross-buy?

No. The Switch / Switch 2 version is one purchase, and the Steam version is a separate purchase. Buying once does not unlock the other.

Can I play Hokko Spaces on Switch and Switch 2 with the same save?

The same Nintendo Switch SKU works on both Switch and Switch 2 hardware. Save data does not automatically sync between the two: you need Nintendo Switch Online cloud save or a manual save transfer to move a save between consoles. The save is still tied to the Nintendo ecosystem, not the Steam ecosystem.

Does Hokko Spaces have online multiplayer?

No. Hokko Spaces is a single-player, build-and-decorate sandbox. There is no online co-op, no online multiplayer, no leaderboards. The Nintendo Switch Online mention on the eShop page refers to general NSO functionality (cloud save, friend list), not Hokko Spaces-specific online features.

Does Hokko Spaces have crossplay with friends on other platforms?

Not applicable: there is no online multiplayer to share between platforms. The game is single-player only.

Does Hokko Spaces support cloud saves?

On Switch, cloud saves only when you have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. On Steam, cloud saves via Steam Cloud (Steam Cloud is enabled by default in the Steam client).

Will Hokko Spaces add cross-progression later?

Not announced. There is no official word from Team17 or Wonderscope Games on cross-progression, cross-buy, or cross-save between Switch and PC. The Switch 2 compatibility is a hardware-level feature, not a software feature Team17 would need to enable.

Can I share dioramas between Switch and Steam?

Not through the game. The camera mode lets you export snapshots, and you can share those manually on social media. The actual diorama files don’t move between Switch and Steam automatically.

Does Hokko Spaces have a single shared world across all platforms?

No. Each platform holds its own dioramas and residents, and the only way to share one is to export the snapshot manually through the camera mode.

Hokko Spaces is one of the easier “is it cross-platform?” answers because the game is single-player and the platforms are walled off. The Switch / Switch 2 / Steam split means three independent purchases, three independent save ecosystems, and no shared progression. The closest thing to a cross-platform feature is the Switch / Switch 2 hardware compatibility, which is Nintendo’s standard Switch-to-Switch-2 backward-compatibility pattern rather than a Team17 feature. If you only plan to play on one platform and stick with it, none of this matters; if you bounce between Switch and Steam, expect to start each ecosystem from scratch.
