Cyberpunk 2's Original Idea Has Evolved, CDPR Game Director Says

Cyberpunk 2’s original vision is already shifting as the team grows. Game Director Gabe Amatangelo wrote in a new CD Projekt Red blog post published October 13 that the game’s vision is changing as more people join the project. “I had the idea of Cyberpunk 2 in the beginning, but it evolves as I involve more people,” Amatangelo said. “It becomes something else, right? It becomes this thing that I’ve shepherded, but it’s ultimately a reflection of the team’s hearts and souls.”

The post, titled “Why Games? Why CD PROJEKT RED? Why Cyberpunk 2?,” is a personal essay rather than a roadmap reveal. Amatangelo used it to talk about how he got into games (Ultima IV on the Atari), how he became a developer (modding Neverwinter Nights, then Mythic Entertainment), and how CDPR’s culture of challenging assumptions shaped his leadership style.

The piece also drops a current team-size data point for Cyberpunk 2. “There were just eight of us when I moved to the US to establish our Boston Hub,” he said, “but there are now more than 180 developers working on the game.” That number matches CDPR’s H1 2026 group presentation, which our Project Hadar story cited at 184 developers across Cyberpunk 2. For comparison, The Witcher 4 has nearly three times as many, at 519.

Amatangelo is also the Game Director on Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty expansion, so the Boston team is not new to the franchise. The Cyberpunk 2 team includes Creative Director Igor Sarzyński, who joins Amatangelo on Episode 33 of CDPR’s AnsweRED podcast (out October 1) to talk about how a game’s vision takes shape and evolves. CDPR has not announced a release window for Cyberpunk 2.

CDPR’s active projects (as of H1 2026 group presentation, July 31, 2026)

Project Team size Status Public target
The Witcher 4 519 Full production 2028
Cyberpunk 2 184 Full production Not announced
Project Hadar 33 Pre-pre-production (prototypes) Not announced
Project Sirius (Witcher multiplayer) 84 Hit by layoffs earlier in 2026 Not announced

Our read: This is the kind of pre-production honesty CDPR doesn’t usually publish. The studio’s lead franchise at the moment is still Witcher 4, and Cyberpunk 2’s 184-person team is comparatively small. Amatangelo’s framing, “it becomes a reflection of the team’s hearts and souls,” is also the clearest sign yet that the game’s setting and systems are still in flux. If you were waiting for Cyberpunk 2 to feel like Cyberpunk 2077 again, the game director is telling you it won’t. Phantom Liberty, his last project in the franchise, was widely cited as one of the best Cyberpunk stories CDPR has shipped, so CDPR clearly trusts him to keep iterating until something lands. The Cyberpunk 2 team in Boston has tripled in the year since Cyberpunk 2077 hit its current-gen Switch 2 release.
