Cat and Paste, a 2-16 player online hide-and-seek game where cats disguise themselves as objects on the map, gets a free open playtest on Steam from October 16 to October 19. Tokyo studio BeXide announced the game this week for PC via Steam, with a release date and price still to come (Gematsu).
The twist is in the name. Every cat copies any object on the stage, from crates and barrels to a full-sized tree, then pastes decoys of itself everywhere it can. A quiet stack of crates turns into a rainbow mountain of fakes. Hunters swing hammers to clear clusters, or take rifle shots that pop every connected paste in a chain reaction.
There are two modes. Hide & Seek Royale is a free-for-all: everyone hides as a cat, then everyone hunts, and whoever finds the most cats wins. Hide & Seek WARS is team infection tag, where the cat team wins by surviving until time runs out. An Edit Mode lets players place objects and build a stage together before a match, and save it for later. Rounds run five to 10 minutes.
When you can play
The playtest runs from October 16 at 6:00 PM JST to October 19 at 4:00 PM JST. In the US, that’s October 16 at 2:00 AM PT / 5:00 AM ET through October 19 at 12:00 AM PT / 3:00 AM ET. Request access on the game’s Steam page; the playtest is a separate free app.
Our read: we analyzed BeXide’s announcement and the two modes, and Cat and Paste is essentially Prop Hunt with a copy-paste twist. Prop Hunt is the classic mode where hiders disguise themselves as objects. The chain-reaction rifle shots should make it far more chaotic. Free playtests are the best way to judge a party game, so grab a few friends that weekend. More Steam tests and indie launches are on our Release Calendar, and new indies get covered in our Indies section.
