The Friday night numbers are in, and the story they tell is the one Xbox and Microsoft have been arguing about for a week. Around that, Squadron 42 finally let players wishlist the single-player Star Citizen spinoff after fourteen years of waiting, and there’s a fresh M2 double-header from Japan that didn’t make the headlines the first time. Here’s your Sunday morning brief.
The big one
Gears of War: E-Day peaked at 31,517 concurrent players on Steam in its first 48 hours, according to the player-count data we tracked. That’s roughly triple the all-time peak of any previous Gears of War game on Steam, and it lands on top of the more uncomfortable 230,000-copies-sold number that analyst Rhys Elliott floated on Friday. The two data points aren’t actually contradictory: 1.7 million Game Pass players are said to have touched the game in the same window, and the Steam peak measures the audience that paid (or didn’t pay) for the Premium Edition’s early access on PC.
The combination is the one Microsoft has to keep explaining. E-Day’s reception is strong, the Steam peak is a clean win for the platform port, and yet the receipts on Xbox look thin against a Game Pass audience ten times the size of the paying base.
Our read: the 31K peak is the headline, but the 1.7 million Game Pass plays are the actual signal. Xbox and Microsoft can keep arguing about which number matters, but the Steam record is now the public answer to whether the Premium Edition’s $30 early access actually moved the needle on PC. The answer is yes, and it doesn’t change the Game Pass cannibalization question either. Same argument we laid out in the $70-game-is-dead-on-Xbox feature yesterday.

Out today
A quiet Sunday. The release calendar is empty for October 11, and the next major launch on the books is Planet Zoo 2 and Valor Mortis on October 13, followed by Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse and the It Takes Two Switch 2 edition on October 15. Good day to clear the backlog.
Deal of the day
Death’s Door is $1.99 on Steam, 90% off the regular $19.99. The Acid Nerve action-adventure sits at an 85 on Metacritic, was a 2021 Game Awards nominee, and is the right size for a Sunday afternoon if you’ve never played it. The discount runs through the publisher’s autumn sale window.
One more thing
Fourteen years between announce and Steam wishlist. Squadron 42 first showed up as a Star Citizen stretch goal in October 2012, and the wishlist button on Steam is going live in 2026. Cloud Imperium’s single-player spinoff outlived two console generations, the entire pre-launch Star Citizen fundraising cycle, and most of the original Kickstarter backers’ patience. The new Squad 42 wishlist trailer is the moment, finally, that players can put their money where their patience has been.
