Risk of Rain 2 just got a sizable paid expansion. The “Hallowed Concepts” DLC, published by 2K and Gearbox Publishing and developed by Hopoo Games, is live now on PC (Steam and Epic), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and Switch.
The expansion drops players into the cult-like world of N’Kuhana, with the developer promising “horrific new enemies” and “powers never before possible in Risk of Rain 2” tucked into the lore of the N’tormat. It comes with two new playable survivors, a fresh stage rotation, and a new timed-challenge mode.
What’s in Hallowed Concepts
- Two new survivors: Acolyte and Enforcer. The Acolyte is a close-range glaive-wielder who banks a portion of the health she loses (and incoming healing) to reclaim later. Her Sacrifice special marks an enemy and channels “the power of the Death God” for a massive burst of damage. The Enforcer is a returning face from the original Risk of Rain, built around an unbreakable shield. Steel Protection parries projectiles back, Shield Tackle closes the distance, and Rally Point creates a barrier that gets restored with each kill.
- Trials of N’kuhana. A timed-challenge mode built around pocket realms, each with its own objectives and rewards. Trials come in three flavors: Winnowings of Survival, Predation, and Mortality, with one shared timer across them. That gives you a real choice between pushing deeper and bringing the power you’ve earned back to your main run.
- Three stages. The fetid depths of Damp Caverns (a returning location), the villages of the Tenebrous Quagmire, and the sacred ground of The Lurid Basilica.
- Plus: new bosses, enemies, item types, and music, per Gearbox Publishing.
How the Acolyte unlock works
If the early Destructoid guide is any indication, the Acolyte isn’t unlocked by default. You’ll need to pick up the N’tormat item and at least one page, hit the Shrine of Descent, and clear a Teleporter event to open a portal that leads to a boss rush. Beat the Anima Harvester at the end, trade the Acolyte any healing item, and she joins your roster. The Enforcer, by contrast, is unlocked through his own set of Trials challenges.
Price and platform notes
2K and Gearbox didn’t list a price in the announcement, so the Steam store page is the place to check the current tag in your region. The base game and the new DLC are both live on every platform Risk of Rain 2 supports. If you’ve been waiting for a reason to come back, this is the biggest content drop the game has had in a while.
