Gears of War: E-Day got its first major post-launch patch on October 14, eight days after the game’s October 6 release. The Coalition is the Vancouver studio inside Xbox Game Studios that has shipped Gears of War since Gears 4. It called the patch “a significant patch that impacts all areas of the game.”

The headline fix is to Ranked Versus. Players who played placement matches after yesterday’s Ranked launch were placed in the wrong skill division. The patch corrects that. Ranked itself wasn’t in E-Day’s launch lineup. This is the first time the studio has handled live skill rating at scale. The placement fix is the first test of whether The Coalition’s matchmaking infrastructure can recover from a bad rollout.

The patch covers more than 60 issues across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus. On PC, Xbox Series X|S, and supported handhelds, the update includes stability and memory improvements targeting long play sessions. It also adds account linking and login fixes, social menu fixes, anti-cheat hardening, and a fix for colorblind settings that weren’t displaying as described.

Campaign gets the longest list. The unkillable enemies in Act 1 Chapter 1 are gone. The splitscreen roadblock in Act 2 Chapter 1 is fixed. The Act 3 Chapter 2 boss will return to the encounter area, and the long-running elevator roadblock in Act 5 Chapter 2 is unstuck. Progress tracking in Co-Op sessions is also restored. The studio is explicit about what it can’t undo: missing collectibles and missing in-game rewards won’t be auto-restored, so players who lost them will need to re-collect the items or replay the relevant mission to re-earn the rewards.

Horde Siege gets its own pass. The Medic’s Stim Vaporizer will now revive friendly players when the Friendly Fire modifier is active. The Corpser will stop becoming unkillable during an Invasion Event, and Boomers will stop getting stuck in the Armadillo Factory on the Prospect Bay map.

Versus sees targeted fixes too. The Lancer Mk1 will now kill enemies with melee attacks, the Demolition bomb won’t get stuck on Park, and the Breechshot will properly award headshot hit markers. Skyward gets a fix for the Torque Bow not showing an Active Reload bar, and Series S players on Precinct will see Active Reload bars during TDM matches. There’s also a fix for the Precinct Conquest zone exploit that let players control zones from outside them.

The patch is live now. The full notes are on the official Gears of War site, and Klobrille (the verified industry insider who broke several of the game’s pre-launch details) posted the rollout confirmation along with the link.

Our read: a 60-fix patch eight days after launch is the cadence The Coalition has historically kept with earlier Gears games (see our October 6 launch-week coverage and the Steam peak coverage). The Ranked Placement fix arriving inside 24 hours is the right tempo for a bug that hit ranked matches on day one. If you’re still chasing collectibles or stuck on a specific mission, this is the patch that unsticks you. If you’re queueing Ranked tonight, your placements will count the way they were supposed to yesterday.

What’s fixed by area

Mode Notable fixes Patch size
Ranked Versus Placement matches that placed players in the wrong division One-line note from the studio
Campaign Unkillable Act 1 enemies, Act 2 splitscreen roadblock, Act 5 elevator stuck, Co-Op progress tracking 20+ fixes
Horde Siege Stim Vaporizer friendly-fire, Corpser unkillable in Invasion Events, Boomers stuck in Prospect Bay 12+ fixes
Versus Lancer Mk1 melee, Demolition bomb stuck on Park, Precinct Conquest zone exploit 18+ fixes

The Coalition is also tracking the Act 1 Chapter 1 unkillable-enemy issue as an ongoing investigation under Known Issues; some Campaign achievements still won’t auto-reward completion.
