Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 arrives worldwide on Friday, October 23, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. It’s the first mainline Call of Duty to skip PlayStation 4 and Xbox One entirely, the first since 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts on Wii U to ship on a Nintendo console. Unlike Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, it also won’t be on Xbox Game Pass at launch. With digital pre-orders open on most platforms since May and Switch 2 pre-orders live since August 26, here’s everything worth deciding before launch.

A quick note: this guide draws on the official Activision support page for Modern Warfare 4 editions, Activision’s preorder benefits blog, and the original reveal coverage at IGN. For background, see our October 8 release-date story on the same game.

What you get in each edition

There are three editions, and the only physical option is the Standard Edition on disc.

Edition Price (USD) Where it’s sold Headline extras
Digital Standard $69.99 All digital storefronts Full game + digital pre-order bonuses
Physical Standard $69.99 PS5, Xbox Series X (disc) Full game; physical Switch 2 version coming later
Digital Vault $99.99 All digital storefronts Game + Hostile Alliance Pack, Special Forces Pack, Signature Weapon Collection, BlackCell (1 season), DMZ Deployment Bonus

All three editions are eligible for the same set of digital pre-order bonuses, which are listed in the next section. The Vault Edition’s extras are layered on top of the Standard Edition’s content, so you don’t pick between them.

Important fine print: The Vault Edition Loyalty Discount, which knocks 10% off the Vault Edition for players who have owned and played a Call of Duty title released in 2019 or later (or played one through Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or PC), only applies to fresh Vault pre-orders on the same platform account. You can’t claim it later by upgrading a Standard Edition, and the discount is not available with Vault Edition upgrades. Per Activision, the offer runs through launch day.

Digital pre-order bonuses for everyone

Lock in any digital edition (Standard or Vault) and you receive the following on top of the base game:

  • Campaign Early Access starting Friday, October 16 in Pacific time. That’s a full week to play the campaign before launch night.
  • Hunter Killer Operator Skin in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Call of Duty: Warzone the moment you pre-order, with the same skin also arriving in Modern Warfare 4 at launch.
  • Gilded Pearl Weapon Camo Pack, which includes the Moonlit Pearl Universal Camo (instant unlock in Black Ops 7 Season 05) and a challenge to earn the Gilded Ruin Universal Camo. The first 100,000 players to clear the challenge get a serialized version engraved with their number. Both rewards also land in Modern Warfare 4 at launch.
  • Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint, with a translucent OG Green variant exclusive to Xbox Series X|S and a mil-spec variant on every other platform. The two are functionally identical.
  • Open Beta Early Access, which already wrapped on September 1.

A few of these are time-sensitive. The Gilded Pearl Camo Pack Challenge opened at 12:00 PM PT on July 23, so anyone who pre-orders now is past the window to grab a serialized Gilded Ruin camo. The Hunter Killer Skin and the camo must be redeemed by October 23, 2027, per Activision’s footnotes.

Vault Edition extras in detail

If the Vault Edition is worth $30 more to you, here’s what you’re paying for on top of the bonuses above.

  • Hostile Alliance Operator Pack with two variants of Price and Valeria, plus Ghost and Blix. Lands in Modern Warfare 4 at launch and in Warzone in Season 1.
  • Special Forces Operator Pack with four Operators from the campaign’s Coalition force: COM SFT (France), KSK Amphibious (Germany), South Korean Special Forces, and SAS (UK), each with localized voice packs. Same rollout as above.
  • Signature Weapon Collection: five weapons with unique Blueprints, including a Kastov 762 with the experimental Voltspine “Kastov Arc” Apex Attachment, an ISO Nightshade SMG with the La Sombra Venenosa Blueprint and ISO Trace tracking rounds, a Rezi 12 shotgun with the Rezi Enforcer pump-action conversion, an Oris 8.6 marksman rifle with the Oris Razor three-knife attachment, and a Combat Knife. All five come with Apex Attachments in the box.
  • BlackCell Battle Pass for one season (Season 1, if you play in that window), with 1,100 COD Points, 20 Tier Skips, and the usual exclusive Operator and Blueprint drops.
  • DMZ Deployment Bonus, with the exact contents to be announced.

If you already pre-ordered the Digital Standard, you can upgrade to Vault for $30 in the in-game store or your platform’s store, but you won’t get the Loyalty Discount on top.

Crossplay and cross-progression: what carries where

Modern Warfare 4 ships with crossplay across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2, and your progress is tied to your Activision ID rather than a single platform. In practice, that means:

  • You need an Activision account (free) and you need to link your platform accounts to it.
  • Weapon XP, Battle Pass progress, unlocks, Operators and challenges follow the Activision ID across any linked platforms.
  • Console players can opt out of crossplay in the settings, which puts you in a smaller pool of same-platform matches.
  • You still need to own the game on each platform you want to play on. Progression carries over; licensing doesn’t.
  • The Switch 2 version supports optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, in addition to standard gamepad and handheld play.
  • A mobile number linked to your Activision account is required to play on PC, and a PlayStation Plus or Game Pass Essential / Nintendo Switch Online subscription is required for online play on consoles.

On PC specifically, you’ll also need TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled in your motherboard’s UEFI, per Activision’s PC security page. Plan on a trip into BIOS if it’s your first time.

PC: what we know and what we don’t

Activision has not published a final PC spec sheet for Modern Warfare 4 as of this writing. The company has said the game will set a new technical benchmark for the series, with expanded ray tracing (reflections, ambient occlusion and shadows) across all game modes, including the campaign. The PC port is built with the help of Beenox, the same studio that has handled Call of Duty on PC since Black Ops 4.

For a planning baseline, the Modern Warfare 4 PC port is expected to land in the same neighborhood as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023), which called for an Intel Core i5-6600 or AMD Ryzen 5 1400, 8 GB of RAM and a GeForce GTX 960 / Radeon RX 470 at minimum, and an i7-6700K / Ryzen 5 1600X with 16 GB and a GTX 1080 Ti / RTX 3060 / RX 6600 XT for a recommended 60 fps setup. Treat that as a floor, not a guarantee, and wait for Activision’s official spec sheet on the Steam page before buying a new GPU.

Pre-load and release times

Activision hasn’t published a single global unlock time. The standard Call of Duty pattern is regional midnight in each storefront’s local time, with pre-loads usually going live 48–72 hours before launch. For the US that means:

  • East Coast: unlock 12:00 AM ET on October 23
  • West Coast: unlock 9:00 PM PT on October 22 (i.e., midnight local)
  • UK: 12:00 AM GMT on October 23
  • Central Europe: 12:00 AM CET on October 23
  • Japan: 12:00 AM JST on October 23

The October 16 campaign early-access window opens at 12:00 AM PT on October 16. Pre-loads for the early access period tend to be enabled a couple of days in advance, often silently rolled out the night before.

What to do this week if you’re playing on launch day

  1. Pre-load early. Even if you’re on a fast connection, Modern Warfare 4’s texture-streamed install (Activision notes that an internet connection is required for Multiplayer and DMZ because of streaming) is heavy. Get the preload running the moment it goes live on your platform.
  2. Link your Activision ID now. If your Battle.net, PSN, Xbox, Steam and Nintendo accounts aren’t all linked, do that first. It’s the only way cross-progression works, and it’s also a one-way door for some platforms.
  3. Link a phone number to your Activision account if you’re on PC. Activision flags it as required, and account recovery without one is slow.
  4. Decide on Vault before the Loyalty Discount window closes. If you’ve played a CoD from 2019 onward, the 10% off is only valid on Vault pre-orders through October 23.
  5. Back up your save storage. If you’re on PS5 or Xbox and you’re tight on space, the Warzone install often shares assets with Modern Warfare 4, which can save you a re-download.
  6. Free up your Switch 2 storage. A full-fat CoD port on Switch 2 is going to be a chunk of your microSD card. Clear out anything you aren’t going to revisit this month.

The big question on most players’ minds: what does Modern Warfare 4 actually do differently? Three things, per Activision. Weapon bloom is gone from hipfire, so every shot lands where the gun is pointed. The Create-a-Class menu is unified across Operators, weapons, Equipment and Killstreaks so you can build a loadout in one screen. And the new Kill Block map rotates more than 500 modular layouts between rounds, so 6v6 stays fresh over a launch-weekend grind. The campaign covers the Korean Peninsula, New York, Paris and an SAS night raid in Mumbai, and DMZ returns with a Forward Operating Base, trait-tree Operator progression and dynamic weather over a single large exclusion zone on the Korean coast.

Game Pass is Microsoft’s subscription library, and Modern Warfare 4 isn’t in it at launch. Xbox has been reminding subscribers to buy the game if they want to play on day one, with Game Pass availability starting in Holiday 2027. Our read: we analyzed that timing against the $69.99 Standard price, and waiting a year for Game Pass only makes sense if you’re happy to skip launch-season multiplayer entirely.

For the latest on dates and modes, follow the Modern Warfare 4 hub and our DMZ early access story. Everything else launching that week is on the October release list.

If you only do one thing before launch, link your accounts and pre-load. The rest is just deciding whether the Vault Edition’s 5 guns, 8 Operators and a Battle Pass season are worth the $30 premium over Standard.

Correction (October 9, 2026): We originally called this the first current-gen Call of Duty without a Game Pass launch. 2023's Modern Warfare III also skipped Game Pass at launch; the accurate comparison is that Black Ops 6 and 7 launched on Game Pass and Modern Warfare 4 won't.
