Total War: SHOGUN 2 is back on Steam today, October 13, as a brand-new Complete Edition built by Creative Assembly and MATABOO, with one change that matters to Japanese players: full Japanese voice acting, the first in the franchise’s history.

The Complete Edition launches at $39.99 / ¥5,990 on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store, and bundles the base game with every official DLC, including the Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai expansion campaigns, all faction and unit packs, and every historical content update. SEGA and Creative Assembly also rebuilt the engine layer: improved lighting, shadow and texture quality, 1440p and 4K UI scaling, modernized controls, ultrawide monitor support, and a 64-bit upgrade. Mod.io is now integrated for official mod support, and 50 previously unplayable minor factions are now selectable on the campaign map. Local pricing and language listings are already live on the Japanese Steam store.

The Japan-only first to cover the release was GameSpark, which noted that SHOGUN 2 was the textbook “omakuni” (region-locked from Japan) title until August 2024. With this new SKU, Japanese players finally get a proper local release with full voice, not a fan-translated workaround. The Complete Edition is also a separate product from the controversial Total War: SHOGUN 2 Remastered that pulled mediocre reviews last week and led to the original 2011 base game being pulled from sale. It is the same SEGA Japan parent that just confirmed Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Arcade for Japanese game centers this month.

By the numbers

  • $39.99 / ¥5,990 launch price, single global SKU, no regional lock
  • 15 supported languages, with 9 of them shipping full voice acting (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese)
  • 50+ newly playable minor factions on the campaign map
  • 70 GB storage requirement, 64-bit only, Windows 10 minimum
  • 75% launch discount for non-owners of the original 2011 base game, per GameSpark
  • Free legacy DLC for existing original SHOGUN 2 owners on Steam

Can you play it in English?

Yes. English is the primary language, with full audio. The store page lists 15 supported languages. The Complete Edition is a single global SKU with no regional lock, so the $39.99 USD price is the same worldwide. Players who already own the original 2011 SHOGUN 2 on Steam will receive the legacy DLC for free; everyone else can pick up the new edition at a 75% launch discount. Total War: SHOGUN 2 is the first game in the series to ship with full Japanese voice acting, which is why GameSpark called it out as a Japan-first story: Western strategy fans have had English audio for the whole franchise, but Japanese players have had to make do with text-only or English voices until today.
