Sony Interactive Entertainment will release a Japan-only PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black on November 19, 2026, for ¥55,000 including tax. Sony announced it on PlayStation.Blog Japan, and pre-orders open at Japanese retailers and online stores on October 20.
Like the existing Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition, the new model only works with a PlayStation account set to Japanese with Japan as the country/region. It has the standard 825GB SSD, 3D audio, PS4 backward compatibility, and the usual DualSense features. The color matches Midnight Black accessories such as the PlayStation Portal.
A matching Disc Drive Midnight Black (model CFI-ZDD1J01) launches the same day for ¥11,980, for anyone who wants to play physical games later.
November 12 marks six years since the PS5 launched in Japan, Sony notes. The new model shares its launch day with Grand Theft Auto VI in Japan. Sony also listed games still to come, including GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, and its own God of War Laufey. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls and Marvel’s Wolverine are already out. Japanese buyers who purchase by March 31, 2027 can sign up for a promotion that extends the one-year warranty to two years.
Sony’s post also includes a notice that PlayStation games released in January 2028 or later will be sold only as downloads, through PlayStation Store and retailers. Disc games released before then can still be used.
Our read: this is a color variant, not new hardware. The account lock means it won’t work for players outside Japan, and Sony hasn’t announced an international version. The download-only notice is the bigger story, especially for anyone deciding between digital and disc. Our platform guide covers that choice, and GTA 6’s release details and the Release Calendar list every confirmed November date.
Correction (October 13, 2026): We originally said November 12 is the PS5's 5th anniversary and that Marvel Tokon and Marvel's Wolverine were still upcoming; it's the 6th anniversary, and both games are already out.
